What is alcohol?

Alcohol is the ingredient found in beer, wine and spirits that causes

drunkenness. Alcohol is formed when yeast ferments the sugars in

different food. For example, wine is made from the sugar in grapes, beer

from the sugar in malted barley, cider from the sugar in apples, vodka

from the sugar in potatoes, beets or other plants.

Signs and symptoms

Early signs

The risk of alcohol dependence begins at low levels of drinking

and increases directly with both the volume of alcohol consumed

and a pattern of drinking larger amounts on an occasion. Young

adults are particularly at risk. The following are some

signs/symptoms of alcoholism:

Repeatedly neglecting your responsibilities at home, work, or

school because of your drinking.

Using alcohol in situations where it’s physically dangerous.

Experiencing repeated legal problems on account of your

drinking.

Continuing to drink even though your alcohol use is causing

problems in your relationships.

Drinking as a way to relax or de-stress.

Causes

Alcoholism is a medical condition. While the exact cause of alcoholism

is unknown, research has shown increasing evidence that susceptibility

to it may be inherited and the risk of developing this medical condition

rises significantly in families with relatives (in particular, parents and

siblings) who are dependent on alcohol.

Relevant information

Most Australians drink alcohol, generally for enjoyment, relaxation and

sociability. However, a substantial proportion drink at levels that increase

their risk of alcohol-related harm.

Just a drink, nothing else.

Have you ever been drunk?

No never.

In where you drink?

At home or sometimes when a friend or may be the family invite me to eat.

Someone has pressured you to drink?

Yes.

You drink because your friends do?

No, because I like to drink.

You drink by moderation?

Yes.

Have you ever had an accident while drunk?

Never.

The last question, what would you say to people who are listening to this?

To drink in moderation, because it causes many many problems and take years to resolve.

Conclusion

Alcoholism affects adult males, but their incidence is increasing among women

and youth. Consumption and alcohol-related problems are increasing

throughout the West since 1980, including the US, Europe and in developing

countries.

Alcoholism, unlike simple excessive or irresponsible consumption of alcohol

has been considered in the past a symptom of social or psychological stress, or

a learned and maladaptive behavior. Alcoholism has become recently defined,

and perhaps more aptly, as a complex disease itself, with all its consequences.

It develops over years. The first symptoms, very subtle, include concerns about

the availability of alcohol, which strongly influences the choice by the patient

from friends or activities. Alcohol is increasingly looking like a drug that

modifies the mood, and less a part of the diet, a social custom or religious rite.

Thus we conclude that alcoholism is a serious illness and therefore we must

try to avoid doing activities that lead us to maintain a good life.
