Prof. Mwangi Peter Wanderi is an Associate Professor and currently the Director, University – Industry
Partnerships, Kenyatta University, Kenya. He has over 22 years of teaching experience at the
University in the areas of Sport Anthropology, Exercise Physiology, and Pedagogy of Physical
Education and Sports both at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. He has successfully supervised
over 50 postgraduate candidates at various levels up to PhD. His PhD, completed in 2001, is on
Traditional Games. This is an area he has widely contributed to through teaching, research and prolific
publishing. He received a 2005 Senior Scholars‟ Research Award from the Organization for Social
Science Research in Eastern and Southern Africa (OSSREA). In 2007, he founded the Kenya
Federation of Traditional Games and Sports. In the same year, 2007, he was awarded a Research Grant
by the German based organization, Katholischer Akademischer Auslaender-Dienst (KAAD) for a
research project entitled, “The Traditional Games of the Maasai of Kenya: A Cultural- Educational
Appraisal” whose objective is to develop an audio-visual documentation of Maasai games for a
possible formalization. He has numerously served as an academic consultant for several institutions
within East Africa since 1995. Between 2007 and 2008 he was appointed a Consultant by the UNESCO
to initiate, co-ordinate and document a research report entitled, “Physical Education and Sports (PES)
in Kenya with Special Reference to Teacher–Training Colleges”. He served as the LOC Chair for the
17th
Biennial Conference of the International Society of Comparative Physical Education and Sports
(ISCPES) hosted by Kenyatta University, Nairobi, Kenya, (which was graced by Mr. Wilfred Lemke,
the Special Advisor to the Secretary General on Sport for Peace and Development). He served as a
transitional member of the ISCPES Executive Board between 2010 and 2012. Between August to
December, 2009 he participated in the Nile Basin Research Programme on a full time engagement at
the University of Bergen, Norway, and worked on a research project entitled, “External Aid System
and Sports in Kenya’s National Development’'. In December 2011, he participated in the organization
of the 1st conference for the African Sport Management Association in Kampala, Uganda. So far he has
established and maintains a very strong and vibrant working academic network in numerous countries
all over the world including China, Germany, Australia, Norway, Canada, US, Venezuela, Russia,
Taiwan as well as from all parts of Africa as shown in his full CV which is availed online. In 2011 he
was on a campaign to promote traditional games of Kenya under a partnership between Kenyatta
University and National Commission for UNESCO. He is the founding member (organizing secretary)
for the newly established African Sports Management Association (ASMA) and a founding member of
the World Association for Sports Management (WASM) founded in Taiwan in April 2012. In 2012, he
initiated a partnership which led to the introduction of Students Training on Entrepreneurial

1) 1999 to 2012, over 56 quality Research Supervisions done at PhD (13), Masters (26) and 17
(Postgraduate Diploma) at different Universities, nationally and internationally, namely,
Kenyatta University, Kenya; Kyambogo University, Uganda; University of Dar es salaam,
Tanzania; and University of Karlsruhe, Germany as detailed below. Out of these 45 are
completed and over 11are ongoing.
2) 2012: Initiated a tripartite partnership amongst Kenyatta University – Kenya National
Commission for UNESCO (KNATCOM - UNESCO) and - Leuphana University of Lueneberg,
Germany, a Partnership which led to the introduction of Students Training on
Entrepreneurial Promotion (STEP) initiative at KU
3) 2011: Obtained a grant through Kenya National Commission for UNESCO for training tutors
from Teachers Training Colleges on the research based traditional games.
4) 2010: Jointly with others, obtained a Partnership for Higher Education in Africa -
Educational Technology Initiative (PHEA-ETI) project grant to implement a Kenyatta
University post graduate e-course on Research Methodology (Currently developing it).
5) August 2009, received a Nile Basin Research Programme award and joined a team of 10 Guest
Researchers from the 10 Nile Basin Countries as a country representative on a research project
entitled, “External Aid System and Sports in Kenya’s National Development’', hence
participated at the University of Bergen, Norway between August and December 2009 on Nile
Basin Research Programme.
6) July 2009, was invited to the Communications Commission of Kenya‟s 10th
Anniversary
Celebration as an academic Moderator in the 3 day public forum/ workshop and Chaired
Session No. 8 on „‟Internet Communication Technology (ICT) Access for All‟‟.
7) 2007 to 2008: Appointed as a Consultant by the UNESCO to initiate, co-ordinate and
