On behalf of the Board of Directors, I would like to extend my sincere thanks to all who responded to posted openings, took the time and effort to participate and keep things running in order to help make Bollinger Hills such a great place to live. On the pool front, we have returning lifeguards Laura Harris (head lifeguard), and Sydney Kordic and Michael Galletly. A Word From Our President (of BHHOA)...

Dear Bollinger Hills residents,

Summer season is just around the corner, and the “good weather” has already started to arrive. The pool is open, and the “new” tennis courts will be finished about the time you read this newsletter! The final top surface on the tennis courts could not be installed until warm weather was here, so we can now get this completed. Let me again thank our resident tennis liaison Al Schlenker for his assistance with this project. The “tennis regulars” have selected tournament blue for the court color, with a green outer color – it should look pretty spiff…

Within our Association Team, we have had some recent changes. On behalf of the Board of Directors, I would like to extend my sincere thanks to all who responded to posted openings, took the time and effort to participate and keep things running in order to help make Bollinger Hills such a great place to live.

On the pool front, we have returning lifeguards Laura Harris (head lifeguard), and Sydney Kordic and Michael Galletly. Look for the swim lesson flyer in this newsletter.

Total 321,829.90The above is a list of investments. Cash balances are invested in a money market account and CD at present. We can invest them in treasury bills and notes, money market funds and certificates of deposit as long as we do not incur capital risk. We maintain $173k in reserves for capital improvements and major repairs.

Dues are due on the first day of each January and July. They are delinquent on the 30th of each of those months as stated in the COLLECTION POLICY. It is important that each homeowner pay his/her dues promptly to enable our Association to continue providing service at low cost and to avoid being charged fees for untimely payments.

Your Board has many ideas for spending these funds to improve the facilities in our neighborhood. If you would like to have input regarding where these funds are spent and/or prioritizing projects, please contact the Board of Directors in writing at PO Box 449 San Ramon, Ca 94583 or email them at [email protected]. What’s Happening at the Pool...By Victor Petersen

Our pool is always very popular, and with hot weather, all the more. Please remember that unattended

children (i.e. no adult) must be 8 or older to swim when lifeguards are present (noon to 6pm), and 14 or

older without lifeguards. Parents, if you are dropping off a child under 14, please make sure that lifeguards are

present before you leave, even if within the regular lifeguard hours. Also, make sure the pool is under normal

operation – sometimes the pool must be temporarily closed for an issue du jour.

We have a great group of lifeguards again this season, with returning lifeguards Laura Harris (head lifeguard),

and Sydney Kordic and Michael Galletly. Parents: please support/reinforce the lifeguards’ instructions – this

includes break time and directions to stop a particular activity. If you see a lifeguard faced with a difficult

situation (either with a child or even another parent (yes, it does happen)), please support the lifeguard by

reinforcing that the lifeguards instruction are to be followed (Parents, this means you too) – and lifeguards

always have final authority.

What’s New in Emergency PreparednessSeveral residents of Bollinger Hills participated in a disaster

simulation exercise on Saturday, May 5 at Iron Horse Middle School.

The event was sponsored by the San Ramon Valley Fire District and

included drills on search and rescue, triage, and emergency medical

care. All CERT graduates were invited to participate. Response from

participants reflected that the combination of CERT classes and

ongoing drills was very helpful in knowing what to do in the event

of a disaster.

One of the things that becomes crystal clear through CERT training

is just how critical a major earthquake could be for San Ramon, and

for Bollinger Hills in particular. Since our neighborhood straddles

an earthquake fault, we are at risk for major damage and professional

help might be diverted to more populated areas for days after the

disaster.

It is important that we all do our part to save as many lives as we can.

What can you do?

PrepareStock enough food, water and medication for 7-10 days. Know how to

shut off your utilities. Make a communication plan with your family.

Check emergency plans at work place and schools. Get to know your

neighbors and make a joint plan to check on each other in the event of a disaster.

TrainCERT classes are offered several times a year through the SRV Fire

District. The next class begins June 28 and runs for six weeks. To register,

contact Danielle Bell at [email protected]. If your schedule doesn’t

permit you to take the CERT class, three-hour PEP classes are offered at

various times throughout the year. Call 838-6697 for dates and times.

PracticeParticipate in drills offered at work place and schools, as well as within

your community and neighborhood.

We all hope the worst doesn’t happen, but if it does, we can be

prepared to take care of our own families and our neighbors until

help arrives.

Healthier Lawns the Herbicide-Free Way

Healthy lawns naturally resist weeds, insects and disease. Follow these lawn maintenance steps for a healthier lawn environment:

Landscape CornerBy Susan Friedman

MowhighIf you only apply one of these steps, let this be it! A lawn mowed high discourages weed and insect invasion. Set cutting height at 2.5 or three inches. Never scalp your lawn. Long grass blades stay much stronger, prevent weeds from sprouting, shade the roots and prevent drying of soil, and encourage longer, healthier roots. Mow regularly, never removing more than one-third of the leaf length at a time. Keep cutting blades sharp. This avoids tearing grass and making it susceptible to disease.

MulchclippingsUse a mulching mower or leave clippings on the lawn as mulch. This reduces the need for fertilizer by 30 percent.

WaterdeeplyDeep watering allows the lawn to establish deep root systems, which result in healthier grass that is more drought resistant. Lawns need about one inch of water a week, preferably applied before 8 AM. Frequent, light sprinklings waste water and encourage shallow roots.

ControlweedsandinsectsecologicallyA healthy, well-cared for lawn out competes most weeds. Check often for stressed areas like bare spots (they invite weed invasion) and treat promptly by eliminating the cause (such as heavy traffic). Overseed when necessary. Remove occasional weeds by hand. For persistent weed problems, get your soil professionally analyzed. Add lime or sulfur to modify pH. This increases availability of plant nutrients and promotes beneficial micro-organisms. Dandelions thrive when pH rises to about 7.5, indicating that it’s time to add sulfur to lower pH. Cut down on pesticides and herbicides. Pesticides don’t just kill pests; they also kill the organisms in the soil that help keep the lawn healthy. Dishwashing soap and water sprayed in warm weather is effective against most insect pests.

Cabana Need to Knows...• Don’t forget to reserve the cabana early for the summer months. The calendar is filling up!

• Lifeguards are required (paid by the person renting the cabana) for events after normal lifeguard hours of 12pm - 6pm.

• When using the cabana please remember to take your garbage with you.

• Maximum capacity is 40!

• Please remember the park area closes at ‘dusk’. Please respect the surrounding neighbors by bringing your event inside after dusk.

A Note on Guests...The Bollinger Hills facilities (pool, tennis, and park) are for our resident’s enjoyment and for your personal guests while you are in attendance. For larger groups of guests a resident must reserve the Cabana. Please do not invite a large group to simply “show up” at the pool or park as your guest. Not only is this not the intent of our guest privilege, it also affects a homeowner who has rented the Cabana for an event if another homeowner arrives with an unscheduled large group. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
