    Presidents Message On behalf of t h e B o a r d o f Directors, it is my sincere pleasure and privilege to welcome you to the inaugural edi;on of our digital bulle;n. Our goal with this publica;on is to keep our members

    informed about new developments within Puerto Rico TESOL. The Board of Directors is here to serve your needs as a member. While I have the pleasure of serving as president for 2014, the success of the organiza;on would be impossible without the ac;ve support and par;cipa;on of our Board Members and therefore, I would like to recognize them for their service. Because of the Board's hard work, as well as the support of our sponsors and our membership, PRTESOL IS STILL ALIVE. Many thanks to all of you for helping to make our associa;on the best. Many exci;ng events await us in 2014. We began this year with the rst all-day Leadership Summit Strengthening Our Eorts through E e c : v e L e a d e r s h i p , T e amwo r k a n d Commitment, on February 1st at Pon;cal Catholic University of Puerto Rico, Ponce campus. During this summit, the main board and chapter boards convened to evaluate, strategize, and redirect our eorts to beVer serve the English educators in Puerto Rico. The evalua;ons and response from the summit were outstanding and the purpose of the event was achieved. Two board members and I aVended the TESOL Interna:onal Conven:on from March 25 to March 29 in Portland, Oregon. I am proud to say that the three of us presented at this conven;on. Puerto Rico TESOL was well-represented.

    In April, we had the Western Chapters Spelling Bee Contest and its all-day conference, and Eastern Chapters president Helvia Guzman invited the chapter members to a free brunch in Loiza. In May, the Metro Chapter held its Storytelling Contest, and the Southern Chapter had its all-day conference. Our culmina;ng event is the annual Conven;on on November 14-15 at the Hilton Ponce Golf and Casino Resort. The theme for the conven;on is No One LeI Behind: Integra:ng Mul:cultural Perspec:ves in the English Classroom. In add i;on to these profess iona l development ac;vi;es, we have begun an ini;a;ve to recruit new members called Give Us a Hand Campaign. For addi;onal informa;on regarding these upcoming events and our recruitment c a m p a i g n , v i s i t o u r w e b s i t e www.puertoricotesol.org periodically or look for us on Facebook and TwiVer. I hope you are as excited as I am about 2014, and that you help us con;nue our tradi;on of success. The strength of our organiza;on is premised on the level of involvement by our members. As with all of our technological enhancements, we are not looking to replace human contact but to supplement the personal rela;onships you have with people within our organiza;on. We hope you enjoy this rst digital edi;on of the Bulle;n from the Board, and we welcome your comments so that we can deliver the best publica;on possible.     2014 Leadership Summitby Maureen Orama, Private Elementary School

    The Summit held at Catholic University on Saturday, February 1, 2014, was a wonderful experience. We had never had a mee;ng that included all the elected board members from both the main Board and from the local chapter boards. This type of ac;vity is recent in PRTESOL. When I was on the Board before, over 10 years ago, the new members were a bit lost because we started to work with a number of people that we really

    didn't know. This ac;vity gave us the opportunity to learn together and plan together. We started out with a great presenta;on from Col. Efrain Soto. He is not only a PRTESOL member but a great mo;va;onal speaker.

    Aler the great presenta;on, we had lunch and it was a good experience. The dierent Board members started sharing what they wanted for PRTESOL. This was conrmed at our small group mee;ngs. There were three dierent small groups, presidents, vice presidents and past presidents,

    secretaries and treasurers and nally the representa;ves. All the dierent representa;ves met with Dr. Naomi Vega and Dr. Myriam Caballero. We had a very fruimul session where we gave and evaluated sugges;ons to get our membership numbers growing. I'm very glad to have par;cipated in the Summit, and I look forward to more mee;ngs with the whole PRTESOL Board. The more we work together the sooner we will get to have the strong organiza;on we all want.!

    1st PRTESOL Board and Chapter Boards Leadership Summit

    Strengthening Our Eorts through Eec:ve Leadership, Teamwork, and

    Commitment

    The 1st PRTESOL Board and Chapter Boards Leadership Summit, Strengthening Our Eorts through Eec;ve Leadership, Teamwork and Commitment, was held on Saturday, February 1, 2014, at Pon;cal Catholic University of Puerto Rico. The opportunity to aVend this summit was invaluable. I thought this was a great opportunity to get together and share ideas and experiences. I expected to learn more about my role and working together towards a common goal. The main objec;ve of this summit was g e r n g t o g e t h e r a s a professional organiza;on to discuss our roles and responsibili;es, reevaluate our goals, and work on a strategic work plan for this year. The summit began with Quest Speakers, Col. Efrain Soto and MSG. Luis R. Cora. Both speakers did an excellent job explaining about Strategic-Transforma;onal Leadership: Inspiring Teamwork and Commitment. Then, PRTESOL President 2014, Prof. Edward Torres, gave his presenta;on which included informa;on on the objec;ves of the summit, the annual conven;on, among other things. Members were divided into three groups: (1) Presidents, Vice Presidents, Past Presidents; (2) All Representa;ves; and (3) Secretaries/Membership Sec re ta r i e s /T reasu re r to d i s cus s du;es ,

    responsibili;es, and bylaws. Since I am the PRTESOL Southern Chapter Board Vice President, I aVended that group. The du;es of the Vice President is to assist the president, preside mee;ngs when president is absent, prepare programs for conferences, and becomes president when current presidents term is complete. The Presidents du;es are to preside all mee;ngs, prepare the work plan, and annual budget. The Immediate Past President is a Liaison Ocer for the organiza;on, chairs and makes recommenda;ons as a member of the bylaws commiVee. The vice president eventually lls in all these roles. All three are vo;ng posi;ons. Here is a summary of the bylaws: Membership, which should be paid annually, is open

    to all concerned with the teaching of English to speakers of other languages; board mee;ngs should be at least six ;mes a year and all members must aVend; a vacancy may be declared if a vo;ng member has three absences in a year (excused or not) and a mo;on to remove any board member

    needs 2/3 vote in favor by the Board of Directors; ly percent of vo;ng members must be present to cons;tute a quorum; elec;ons are held yearly for Vice-President and other vacancies; and the annual general mee;ng is held at the Annual Conven;on. Aler the breakout sessions each group reported informa;on received. This summit was what I expected and more. It denitely achieved its purpose of gerng together and strengthening our eorts. I think it was a very produc;ve ac;vity where I learned more about my role and responsibili;es, among other things. It was a great experience and I hope this is not the last ;me a summit like this one is held.

    The main objec;ve of this summit was gerng together as a professional organiza;on to discuss our roles and responsibili;es, reevaluate our goals, and work on a strategic work plan for this year.

    The Metro Chapter Storytelling Contest took place in Universidad Sagrado Corazon on May 3, 2014. There were 15 participants from grades 7th to 12th. Here are some pictures of the participants and winners. Congratulations to all.

    Meet our plenary speakers for the Conven:on Dr. Patricia H. Hinchey

    Professor of Educa;on, Penn State and a Research Fellow, Na;onal Educa;on Policy Center at the University of Colorado, Boulder

    She holds a doctorate from Teachers College, Columbia University, and has authored numerous ar;cles as well as several books on topics including cri;cal theory, educa;on for civic engagement, ac;on research, and teacher assessment. She is also former director of a professional development unit

    for faculty in Penn States regional campuses. Co-author of book ;tled: Educa;ng English Language Learners in an Inclusive Environment.

    The ;tle of her plenary session will be "What I've Learned since I Learned I Was White: My Journey to Mul:culturalism

    In her presenta;on, she will discuss what she has learned along her journey from monoculturalism to her current professional role as a passionate advocate of mul;cultural classrooms. The lessons she's learned and will include the diculty of iden;fying discriminatory norms, the implica;ons of minimal group paradigm, and the complex rela;onship between language and iden;ty. An expert in transla;ng theory to pedagogy, she will also detail the prac;cal classroom implica;ons of these and related topics.

    Dr. Iris Ramer

    Dr. Ramer is a tenured professor of English as a Second

    Language at Middlesex County College in Edison, New

    Jersey, where she has been teaching for over thirty years.

    Dr. Ramers academic creden;als include a B.A. from Inter-

    American University of Puerto Rico, an M.A. from New

    York University, and a D.LiV. from Drew University.

    She is the author of Read Now and Write Now

    published by Kendall/Hunt. In addi;on, she is the founder of the Read Now Project and co-

    founder of Literacy Solu;ons LLC which promote literacy skills for students at all levels. Dr.

    Ramer has presented her work at state, na;onal, and interna;onal levels, and has been a

    Puerto Rico TESOL Awards and Scholarship Opportunities for 2014

    The following are Puerto Rico TESOL-sponsored grants and awards for PRTESOL members. We support our members efforts of self-improvement and their strides towards academic excellence. These awards and scholarship opportunities are funded with membership dues and with the generous sponsorship of many of PRTESOLs friends in the business world who understand our educational mission.

    PRTESOLs grants and awards promote the high standards vital to the development of our profession. PRTESOL invites its members to apply for any of the following awards and scholarship. Just submit the required documents or contact us via e-mail at [email protected]. Current members on the PRTESOL Board of Directors are not eligible for these awards except lifetime achievement award. Information on all awards and the application are printed in the PRTESOLGRAM and on our official PRTESOL web site: www.puertoricotesol.org.

    Selection procedure: PRTESOL Awards Committee will recommend the candidates that should receive these awards to the PRTESOL Board of Directors for their final approval.

    Awards by application: 1. PRTESOL Scholarship Grant to Support Continuing Education in TESOL (for the masters or doctoral levels) AWARD: One $300 cash award PURPOSE: To support advanced studies in the teaching of English to Speakers of Other Languages that will contribute to improving the quality of English language instruction on the island. ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: The scholarship is open to any current PRTESOL member who is actively pursuing a masters or doctoral degree in a TESOL or a related program. The candidate must comply with the following:

    provide evidence of having completed at least nine (9) credits towards the degree

    have an average of 3.50 or higher

    complete the application form and the essay

    not be a previous recipient of this award

    DUE DATE: The application form must be completed and returned to PR-TESOL by September 30, 2014.The recipient will be presented her/his cash award at the PR-TESOL Annual Convention.

    2. PRTESOL Award to Promote Excellence in ESL Teaching Programs AWARD: One cash award of $300 to be used in the purchase of educational resources for the ESL classroom. Purpose: To strengthen a schools ESL program through the awarding of a $300 gift certificate to be used in the purchasing of educational materials (such as teaching materials, books, technology tools or software, and professional readings) to enhance the ESL instruction in the teachers classroom or that school. The person completing the application must be a PRTESOL member from any public or private school (K-12). ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: The award is open to any PRTESOL member who teaches at the public or private K-12 level and whose faculty has not been a previous recipient of the award. The applicant will complete the application form and mail it to the selection committee for its consideration. DUE DATE: The application must be completed and returned to PR-TESOL by September 30, 2014. The award will be presented at the Annual PR-TESOL Convention.

    3. PRTESOL Award to Recognize Recent Research Contributions to the TESOL Field AWARD: Certificates of recognition will be given to these colleagues during the Annual PRTESOL Convention and the abstracts will be published in the PRTESOLGRAM. PURPOSE: To make public the research studies of PRTESOL members at institutions of higher education pursuing a masters, doctoral, and post-doctoral studies and completed between May, 2012 and August, 2013. Those PRTESOL members who have made such important research findings for the continued improvement of our area of specialization should fill out the Application Form. DUE DATE: September 30, 2014.

    4. PRTESOL Travel Grant to Attend the TESOL Convention 2015 AWARD: The amount for this cash award is $300 to be paid directly to TESOL toward the convention fee. PURPOSE: To encourage and support more PRTESOL members to attend the TESOL convention. This is the most important international event for ESL and EFL educators and an enriching professional event. REQUIREMENTS: Attend the 2015 TESOL convention in Toronto, Canada and present evidence of attendance.

    Explain why you should receive this award in a 50- 100 word statement.

    Help the PRTESOL delegates disseminate information about PRTESOL at the TESOL Convention.

    Write an article about your experience for the TESOLGRAM after you attend.

    1. PRTESOL Award for Lifetime Service in the Teaching of English to Speakers of Other Languages (Dr. Marie E. Aloise Life Time Achievement Award)

    AWARD: A plaque, a certificate, and a grant to cover the PRTESOL convention fee for both days. PURPOSE: To recognize and acknowledge outstanding service throughout the years in the teaching of English to speakers of other languages, to PRTESOL and to other sister organizations at the local and international levels. ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: The recipient of this award is selected under the recommendation of the current PRTESOL president and the PRTESOL Board of Directors. The recipient is selected according to evidence of:

    a genuine, long-lasting commitment to PRTESOL,

    ability to combine professional and/or administrative roles in areas concerning English language education,

    ability and desire to promote what is locally done in the field of English language education on the island and abroad.

    2. PRTESOL Outstanding ESL Educator Award

    AWARD: A grant to cover the PRTESOL convention fee for both days and a certificate of recognition. PURPOSE: This award recognizes the outstanding work of two ESL English educators in Puerto Rico, one at the K-12 level and one from higher education. Eligibility for this award is achieved via nomination. CRITERIA: Nominee must have at least five years of experience in the ESL classroom. The materials submitted should show evidence of the nominee's ability to motivate and encourage students as well as engage them in productive and challenging learning. Also, it needs to be proven that the nominee has been involved with: students outside of the classroom in extracurricular activities,

    in the community, and/or

    with colleagues.

    SUPPORTING DOCUMENTATION: (1) A letter that tells why the nominee's work is special and worthy of being recognized. a. The letter should include information that documents the educators effective teaching practices.

    (2) Letters from another person who can write about the nominee, giving relevant information. a. Letters can be from a student, a parent, a colleague, a community person, a professional in another geographic area who knows the nominee, a current or former supervisor, or an administrator.

    (3) A recent curriculum vitae of the nominee
