OBJECTIVE

To develop a competent level of understanding of the Wiki technology and share this with my peers

WHAT IS A “WIKI”?

• “A wiki is a space on the Web where you can share work and ideas, pictures and links, videos and media — and anything else you can think of. Wikispaces offer visual editing and various other tools to make sharing all kinds of content as easy for students as it is for their teachers” (Wikispace.com)

WIKI HISTORY

1995 - Ward Cunningham invented the Wiki

The idea for the name came from a Hawaiian airport ‘Wiki Wiki shuttle’ (meaning quick shuttle)

2000 - many institutions began using it as their collaborative software

2007- officially became a word in the online Oxford English Dictionary

(Wikipedia.org)

WHAT IT DOES

It allows group communication by storing data and enabling group members to communicate by adding to or changing the data

A wiki template ensures a consistent layout

Wikipedia has empowered community members to work collaboratively by providing transparency of edits on its content pages.

WHAT IT DOES

STUDENT’S INSTRUCTIONS

As noted, wiki has been useful in group collaborative projects, so I have created a Wikispace for our group to give you an idea of what your student’s would be experiencing

As the teacher, I have created the Wiki space and will need your email addresses to invite you into this space

Once you receive your email to join Wiki, you must accept and create a password to be allowed onto the site

NOW THAT YOU HAVE SIGNED UP….

Think about the following questions.1. How would you use Wiki in your

setting?2. Could you see Wiki being a useful

teaching/learning tool that you would use on a daily bases?

3. What pros and cons do you anticipate for yourself and your students?
