Can Do In-Office Presentation Program

The Can Do In-Office Program is developed to

educate RA patients about their disease, the

importance of early, aggressive treatment, the

benefits of biologics and the advantages of HUMIRA®

and enhance your relationship with physicians and

nurses in your territory. You can offer this Can Do

Presentation program to multiple physicians in your

territory. The program is designed for small groups

of patients and may be held right in physician office

waiting rooms or consulting rooms.

Flip Chart and BinderAn 11x17" flip chart that the physician or nurse uses as

a educational tool to explain RA to their patients, the

treatment options that are available and the benefits of

HUMIRA®. The pocket in the binder contains sell sheets,

Implementation Guide, Flyer, CD ROMs and Event Report.

CD ROMsEach CD includes a copy of the flip chart of the presentation

that you can leave with your physician to review. And if you

and your physician(s) decide that you want to use a laptop

computer or project on an LED, the CD allows that option.

Physician Sell Sheets Each sheet outlines the benefits of the Can Do Program—

what it does to help patients and the physician's office in

terms of RA educational outreach.

reproduced on a copier.

Patient HandoutsEducational materials for patients attending each program

are collated and ready to order from Jett. The handout

The National Rosacea Society Newsletter Lynn Drake, M.D., Editor

Winter2008 ROSACEA REVIEW

The National Rosacea Society(NRS) has awarded funding for fournew studies as part of its researchgrants program to advance scientificknowledge of the potential causes andother key aspects of this chronic andpotentially life-disruptive disorder thataffects an estimated 14 millionAmericans.

“We are delighted that this impor-tant program is resulting in significantnew findings toward the further under-standing and more effective manage-ment of this widespread disorder,” saidDr. Jonathan Wilkin, chairman of theNRS medical advisory board, whichreviews and selects grant applicationsfor funding. “We are also grateful forthe growing thousands of rosaceapatients whose donations make thisprogram possible.”

Dr. Richard Gallo, chief of thedivision of dermatology at theUniversity of California - San Diego, and Dr. Kenshi Yamasaki of theVeterans Medical Research Foundationwere awarded $25,000 to continue theirNRS-funded research of how catheli-cidins may play a role in the develop-ment of subtype 2 (papulopustular)rosacea.

In previous study results recentlypublished in Nature Medicine, theresearchers found that people with sub-type 2 rosacea had abnormally highlevels of anti-microbial peptides calledcathelicidins, as well as an overproduc-tion of anti-inflammatory peptidesknown as stratum corneum trypticenzymes (SCTE).1 They also discov-ered that the high level of SCTE resultsin a different form of cathelicidin thanfound in patients without rosacea.

By putting these two observationstogether, the researchers were able toinduce signs of rosacea in the skin ofmice, thus suggesting that these mole-cules play an important role in the

In the new study, they will exam-ine these and related substances at the

Q & AQ. Does each flare-up increase

my chances of permanent facial redness?

A. Although rosacea may tendto worsen with each flare-up, facial red-ness may not be permanent with propertreatment and care. Compliance withmedical therapy your dermatologist hasprescribed is of key importance in min-imizing redness. Avoiding lifestyle andenvironmental factors that trigger flush-ing may also be of significant help, andthe National Rosacea Society offers afree “Rosacea Diary” booklet to helpyou identify such factors that mayaffect your individual case. In severecases, therapy with lasers or intensepulsed light may be an option forreducing vasculature and associatedvisible blood vessels or redness.

Q. I saw four dermatologistsbefore being diagnosed because thedoctors thought I was too young tohave rosacea. Is it that rare for some-one in their early 20s to have rosacea?

In a National Rosacea Societysurvey of 1,391 rosacea patients, 17percent of the respondents said theonset of their rosacea occurred prior toage 30. Although rare, reports in med-ical journals have also noted cases ofrosacea among children.
