Step 1: Remove the five screws on the bottom side of the controller. The locations of the screws are shown below. Once the screws are removed, the bottom of the controller can be removed. There is an internal clip which can be released by pressing on the location shown below. Be careful not to disassemble more than you need to since the more you take apart, the more you will have to put back together later on.

Step 2: Drill a hole in the bottom of the controller in the location shown below. Ream the hole slightly by rotating the drill bit around (this helps ensure that the button doesn’t get stuck later).

Step 3: There are several different versions of the PS3 controller and you now need to determine which version you have so that you can attach the rapid fire module to it. Furthermore, you have the option to mod any one of the following trigger buttons: R1, R2, L1 or L2. Which one of these buttons you want modded will change where you need to solder the two blue wires. Each subset of instructions (3a, 3b, 3c, 3d) shows you where to connect the two blue wires for each controller version.

Step 3a shows how to do this for a Dualshock3 Version 1 controller

Step 3b shows how to do this for a Dualshock3 Version 2 controller

Step 3c shows how to do this for a Dualshock 3 Version 0 controller

Step 3d shows how to do this for a Six Axis Version 0 controller

Make certain you’ve correctly identified your controller type and gone to the correct Step 3a,b,c,d. You can use the pictures to visually compare.

Wire routing and module placement may vary slightly depending what type you have. Again, make sure your controller looks like the one in the picture BEFORE soldering.

Some of these configurations require that you solder to either a lead of a chip or a board trace/via. In order to solder to a trace/via, you need to very carefully use an exacto knife to remove the solder mask paint then very carefully solder your wire to it. I tack the wire in place right after with glue so I know I won’t rip it off. Make sure you’re comfortable soldering before you attempt this. If you’re not comfortable with the soldering, we do offer a mod service. Please contact sales@maddogcontrollers for more information on the mod service.

Step 3a (Dualshock 3 Version 1): Attach the red and green wires as shown in Figure 1.

Where you attach the blue wires depends on whether you want R1, R2, L1 or L2 modded.

If you want R1 modded, use the two connection points in Figure 2 labeled “RCOMMON” and “R1”.

If you want R2 modded, use the two connection points in Figure 2 labeled “RCOMMON” and “R2”.

If you want L1 modded, use the two connection points in Figure 3 labeled “LCOMMON” and “L1”.

If you want L2 modded, use the two connection points in Figure 3 labeled “LCOMMON” and “L2”.

Step 3b (Dualshock 3 Version 2): I recommend that you only try and mod ‘version 2’ if you are very, very confident in your soldering skills.

Attach the red and green wires as shown in Figure 4.

Where you attach the blue wires depends on whether you want R1, R2, L1 or L2 modded.

If you want R1 modded, use the two connection points in Figure 4 labeled “BLUE WIRE”. Figure 5 shows a close-up of how you should be soldering to these points.

If you want L2 modded, use the two connection points in Figure 8 labeled “LCOMMON” and “L2”. Note that L2 actually connects to the sixth pin down on the right hand side of the large black chip.

Figure 8: Dualshock3 Version 2 Connection Points for L2 Modding

Note that for ‘Version 2’, one of the blue wire connections requires that you solder to either a lead of a chip (L2) or a trace/via on the board. In order to solder to a trace/via, you need to very carefully use an exacto knife to remove the solder mask paint then very carefully solder your wire to it. I tack the wire in place right after with glue so I know I won’t rip it off. If you encounter this version of the controller, I would strong advise you to see if you have one of the other versions you can mod instead as it is very difficult to solder to this point correctly.

Step 3c (Dualshock 3 Version 0): The following page shows the connections for the DUALSHOCK3 Version 0 controller.

Attach the red and green wires as shown in Figure 9.

Where you attach the blue wires depends on whether you want R1, R2, L1 or L2 modded.

If you want R1 modded, use the two connection points in Figure 8 labeled “R1 and R2” and “USE FOR R1”.

If you want R2 modded, use the two connection points in Figure 8 labeled “R1 and R2” and “USE FOR R2”.

Step 3d (Six Axis Version 0): The following page shows the connections for the Six Axis Version 0 controller.

Attach the red and green wires as shown in Figures 10 and 11 (close-up).

Where you attach the blue wires depends on whether you want R1, R2, L1 or L2 modded.

If you want R1 modded, use the two connection points in Figure 12 labeled “RCOMMON” and “R1”.

If you want R2 modded, use the two connection points in Figure 12 labeled “RCOMMON” and “R2”.

Step 4: Glue the button in place as shown. Be certain that the button is in straight and that the leads are folded over so that they won’t touch the rumble motor.

Page 17: PS3 RAPID FIRE MOD ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTIONS FOR ALL PS3 ...xxcyberhackerxx.weebly.com/uploads/6/1/2/8/6128674/ps3_rf_inst.pdf · Page 1 PS3 RAPID FIRE MOD ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTIONS . FOR

www.maddogcontrollers.com Page 17

Step 5: Neatly route your wires as shown below. The circuit board is designed to fit in the space shown below. Apply hot glue to the bottom of the board and glue it into place as shown below. Be certain that no metal from the board touches any other metal (the rumble motors).

Dualshock3 Version 2 doesn’t have enough space for the board to fit in the space shown. Glue the board standing on an angle to the right of the circular plastic riser for this version.

Also tack your wires down neatly as shown. You may wish to cut your wires to length or tuck them away neatly so they don’t get in the way when you reassemble.

Step 6: Reassemble the controller and test it out. Make sure you don’t force things and that wires aren’t getting in the way.

If you have any issues please re-check your assembly and go back through the tutorial. If you continue to have issues please contact us at [email protected] and we would be happy to help you as much as we can. Providing a photo of your installation is helpful.

The circuit below can serve as a reference should you disconnect anything or decide to shorten up your wires any.
