Jesus Conquers Death
In the Garden of
Gethsemane, Jesus
dies before he dies,
and thereby readies
himself for what
awaits him. The next
day, when Pilate
threatens him with
death, Jesus stands in
a freedom and cour-
age that can be un-
derstood only if we
understand what
happened to him in
the garden. When
Pilate says to him:
“Don’t you know
that I have power
over you, power to
take your life or to
save it?”
Tuesday
Jesus Conquers Death
Jesus answers:
“You have no power
over me whatsoever.
Nobody takes my
life; I give it over
freely.” Pilate is
threatening a man
who is already dead.
No big threat. Jesus
had already under-
gone the agonia. In
great anguish, he
had given his life
over freely the night
before, and so he is
ready for whatever
awaits him.
Wednesday
God Forgives the Maximum
In the Our Father
we say: “Forgive
us our debts as
we forgive our
debtors.” This is
an equation. If
you are not capa-
ble of forgive-
ness, how can
God forgive you?
The Lord wants
to forgive you,
but he cannot if
you keep your
heart closed and
mercy cannot
enter.
Thursday
God For-gives the
Maximum One might
object:
“Father, I for-
give, but I
cannot forget
that awful
thing that he
did to me….”
The answer is
to ask the Lord
to help you
forget. One
must forgive as
God forgives,
and God for-
gives the maxi-
mum.”.
Friday
Indebted to God God of life, we are
grateful for the
many gifts that you
have given to us.
May we become
prudent stewards of
your many gifts and
not thoughtlessly
waste water, food,
and other resources.
May we respond to
you Son’s cry of
thirst with lives of
peacemaking and
just action. We
make his prayer in
your name. Amen.
Saturday
Heaven and Earth
When Saint Francis
met the leper, it was
Jesus he’d met, and
the Lord was saying,
“I was hungry and
you gave me food, I
was thirsty and you
gave me something
to drink, I was a
stranger and you
welcomed me, I was
naked and you gave
me clothing, I was
sick and you took
care of me, I was in
prison and you vis-
ited me” (Matthew
25:35-37).
Sunday
Heaven and Earth
These words made
everything clear
for Francis, and
living them, even
when God seemed
distant or an en-
veloping cloud,
brought near the
kingdom of God.
That is what the
brothers’ lives had
proven from the
very beginning:
Living the Gospel
revealed to them
the kingdom of
God.

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,
I continue to pray that you have a holy and fruitful Lent as we really enter into this
season. Above all, allow this season to move you closer to the Heart of Christ.
Speaking of the heart of Christ, we continue to look at Sacred Scripture in the Cate-
chism. This next section is very important, for it addresses one issue that Christians
find amongst each other: how to correctly understand and interpret the Bible. In our
day, there are so many interpretations as to what the Bible means. This should tell us
that understanding Scripture is not as easy as it sounds.
If we want to correctly understand what Scripture is telling us, we have to consider
some points that are made down below: first, we have to understand the human authors
who God allowed to write the individual books of the Bible. If we do not, we can take
their expressions and words out of context and misapply them. Second, though the Bi-
ble is composed of many books, it is a unified whole. Therefore, every passage in
Scripture must be read in light of every other passage in order for it to fully make
sense. Lastly, because Tradition plays an important role in revelation as we have seen,
Scripture also must be understood in that light.
We will look more in-depth at this next week when we look at what we call the senses
of Sacred Scripture…stay tuned!
III. The Holy Spirit, Interpreter of Scripture (Part One) #109 God In Sacred Scripture, God speaks to man in a human way. To interpret Scripture correctly, the reader must be attentive to what the human authors truly wanted to affirm, and to what God wanted to reveal to us by their words.75 #110 In order to discover the sacred authors' intention, the reader must take into account the conditions of their time and culture, the literary genres in use at that time, and the modes of feeling, speaking and narrat-ing then current. "For the fact is that truth is differently presented and expressed in the various types of his-torical writing, in prophetical and poetical texts, and in other forms of literary expression."76 #111 But since Sacred Scripture is inspired, there is another and no less important principle of correct inter-pretation, without which Scripture would remain a dead letter. "Sacred Scripture must be read and inter-preted in the light of the same Spirit by whom it was written."77 The Second Vatican Council indicates three criteria for interpreting Scripture in accordance with the Spirit who inspired it.78 #112 Be especially attentive "to the content and unity of the whole Scripture". Different as the books which compose it may be, Scripture is a unity by reason of the unity of God's plan, of which Christ Jesus is the center and heart, open since his Passover.79 The phrase "heart of Christ" can refer to Sacred Scripture, which makes known his heart, closed before the Passion, as the Scripture was obscure. But the Scripture has been opened since the Passion; since those who from then on have understood it, consider and discern in what way the prophecies must be interpreted.80 #113 Read the Scripture within "the living Tradition of the whole Church". According to a saying of the Fathers, Sacred Scripture is written principally in the Church's heart rather than in documents and records, for the Church carries in her Tradition the living memorial of God's Word, and it is the Holy Spirit who gives her the spiritual interpretation of the Scripture (". . . according to the spiritual meaning which the Spirit grants to the Church"81). #114 Be attentive to the analogy of faith.82 By "analogy of faith" we mean the coherence of the truths of faith among themselves and within the whole plan of Revelation.
Let us praise the Lord, and give Him thanks!
In Christ the Lord,
Fr. DeBlanc

Saints of the Week
Sat., March 3: Saint Katharine Drexel, Virgin: d. 3 March 1955
at age ninety-seven; Philadelphia heiress and foundress of the Mis-
sionary Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament; established some forty-
nine foundations, including Xavier University in New Orleans;
canonized 1 October 2000 by Pope John Paul II.
Diocese of Lafayette: Centennial News
Mother Drexel—On March 3, 1955, Mother Katharine Drexel passed away at the age of 96. She and the Sis-ters of the Blessed Sacrament, which she founded, would have a profound and lasting effect on the Dio-cese of Lafayette. With her sisters and her financial support, the diocese founded many parishes and schools, particularly for the African American Catholics in Acadiana. Her support began in New Iberia in 1917 when she donated funds for a new church, school, and hall to be built. The parish was named after her re-cently deceased brother-in-law Edward. At the time of her death, Mother Drexel was donating $20,000 a year to schools and churches in the diocese. In 2000 she was canonized a Saint by Pope St. John Paul II.
Annual CRS Rice Bowls The annual Rice Bowl for Catholic Relief
Services is here! Knowing that almsgiving is
a powerful work of penance, this could serve
as a good opportunity to support those in
need.
The bowls will be available in church;
please feel free to take one to use during
Lent.
Once Lent concludes, please bring your do-
nated monies to the parish office or in the
collection, and we will make sure your assis-
tance will be sent to those who truly need it.
Way of the Cross
Please join us for the Way of the Cross,
