Namaskar,Loneliness will be my topic this time. Because

it needs to be heard, discussed and importantly, believed. There are people who ‘look’ lonely and people who ‘feel’ lonely. We oft en misunderstand lonely with alone. Being alone is just being without some company but being lonely is a state of mind that stays with you, haunts you wherever you go. It’s that one vacant spot that ceases to be fi lled. If not dealt with, it can be hazardous to a person’s sanity.

Recently, Britain has appointed a minister for loneliness to tackle the ongoing battle of

loneliness and social isolation. This is in line with the recommendations made by the ‘Jo Cox Commission on Loneliness’, which was established by U.K. lawmaker Jo Cox before she was assassinated in 2016. Minister Tracey Crouch will be responsible for developing a wider strategy on the issue. In Britain alone, over nine million adults are oft en or always lonely. Doctors have long warned that social isolation is a growing epidemic which can have physical, mental and emotional consequences.

Loneliness has become a worldwide woe now. People need to come together to fi nd long-lasting solutions. Being connected, staying in touch is considered to be a fundamental human need, extremely necessary for survival. Our culture, which was once hugely responsible for bringing people together, has lost its relevance today. Disappearance of communities has further fuelled this issue, giving a feeling of abandonment. There is no one person to blame here; it’s the entire society that is changing. People are either running behind their priorities fi ercely or immersing themselves in the state of confusion, having no clarity of anything at all. Either ways, both categories are fi nding it diffi cult to socialise, establish and maintain connect. Being lonely doesn’t mean being free, as is oft en believed.

It’s important to feel needed. That feeling itself is dying but community living can greatly help in restoring it. Communities provide platform for people to connect. There is a purpose in coming together and offering our time and energy to create, build, and nurture things. This is a small step promising bigger impact. Right from ‘The Happiness Network’ community, let us start connecting and collaborating for this initiative.

One brilliant sentence I read somewhere sums this up- Just as anyone can be affected by loneliness, so can everyone be part of the solution.

Hello Friends,India’s presence in ‘Davos meet’ was noticeable. Those of

you who missed out on this promising event, here’s a brief- The World Economic Forum, a Swiss non-profi t organisation based in Switzerland is committed to improving the state of the world. For doing this effectively, an annual meeting takes place in January at Davos, in the eastern Alps region of Switzerland. This forum is looked up by nations as one defi nite platform to resolve international confl icts. The annual meeting brings together around 2,500 business leaders, international political leaders, economists, celebrities and media persons. Apart from the four-day annual meet, the organisation holds some six to eight

regional meetings each year in locations across Africa, East Asia and Latin America, and two further meets in China, UAE and India. There are many other researches and initiatives that exemplify its role in international relations.

Aft er 21 years, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was invited to address the forum. Former Prime Minister Deve Gowda attended the summit in 1997. Modi addressed attendees on the day 1 of the summit. He emphasised on the three most signifi cant challenges to human civilisation- climate change, terrorism and backlash against globalisation. He pointed out at the obvious inequalities in incomes and opportunities, divide between the present and the future and so on. He also made it a point to talk about the present development agenda that has been categorised under fi ve pillars-

1. Reform, perform and transform.2. Usage of technology to transform governance and deliver public entitlements and

services.3. Improvisation of the physical infrastructure including roads, railways, air and sea ports.4. Upscale and improve the rules governing economic activity. Complete integration with the

world in major policy areas. 5. Inclusive economic development.Modi’s speech has been praised across all sectors. China’s foreign ministry said that Modi’s

remark showed that globalisation is the trend of the times and serves the interests of all countries including developing countries.

Some international dailies like Global Times, carried the news of his address on front pages. His move of introducing GST- one tax instead of multiple taxes, earned appreciation at Davos.

Three days aft er his speech at Davos, we could see him host 10 leaders of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations or ASEAN as guests of honour at the ceremonial parade being held at Rajpath on Republic Day. Seeing that, I was reminded of the Sanskrit phrase, ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’.

We, the proud cricketer women!Cricket is just not a sport but is a religion in this country and like all other privileges

bestowed to men in this country they have been the maximum shareholders in enjoying this wonderful sport.

PSPL gave this completely out of the box opportunity to every woman and more importantly to every ordinary 'housewife' to come out of their cocoons and experience 'Cricket' in the most real way they could. A Sport which has been undeniably the heartbeat of this country and a sport which has fascinated 100's and 1000's of Gully's in India to fi nd their aspiring sportsmen and now with pride and hope I can say Sports-women too.

From being tea makers at home to being key players on the fi eld I want to congratulate and pat every woman who participated in this tournament with utmost sincerity, commitment and enthusiasm. It takes immense courage to step into the world completely alien to you, immense spirit to play a sport dominated by men in every aspect (from viewing to playing) and immense guts to tell yourself – 'Yes You Can Do It!' PSPL has opened a new door for all those homemakers and offi ce goers to know their hidden talent in the fi eld of sports and the ability to take challenges irrespective of their age, health limitations and other commitments which have defi ned them all these while.

So kudos for introducing PSPL and creating an opportunity to celebrate the never dying spirit of being a woman!

7th Inning, new beginning!Introducing women cricket in PSPL 7 was a major decision we at PSCL had taken prior to this year's tournament and proving all our initial doubts wrong as many as 7 women teams made their debut and turned this year's season of PSPL truly memorable by their fantastic performance. While Rolling Hills Czarinas bagged the rst ever Women's Trophy, Woodlands Princesses won the runners-up trophy. Meanwhile, the tournament has also received overwhelming response from men. Out of 18 men's teams participated this year, Blue Ridge1 fetched the trophy and Gloria received the runners-up award.

This is a real story of one dynamic and passionate youngster!

During 1970s, this young man, Suryakant, from Marathwada region of Maharashtra, came to Pune for college education. Fighting against all odds, he completed his education. During his Struggling days, one day, he met one orphan kid on the railway platform. Being sympathetic towards this orphan kid, Suryakant took care of the kid for almost 10 months, with a dominated thought of course, “there might be thousands of such kids, with no support! I should do something for them!”

That was the conception stage of Swapnabhoomi! Aft er working in Pune for 3 years,Suryakant went back to his native place, Kerwadi in Parbhani District and started “Swapnabhoomi”.

They say, Behind every successfull man there is a woman! It is True in this case, too. A young woman, who had never gone out of Pune in her lifetime, was ready to go to Kerwadi with Suryakant! She was Manik! Manik had fallen in love with his “Dream”. The couple went to Kerwadi and “Swapnabhoomi (Dreamland)” was born!

The day was, 10th May 1980! Today, Suryakant Dada and Manik Tai have become Aai Baba of Nearly 400 children. The story started with one life and now it’s a Success story of many lives!

There are many proud moments in our 40 years journey. We will come with stories each month. But this month, we have a broad smile on our face!

We take pride in sharing with you that , SEDT has been selected by Miracle foundation as a partner for their program, 'Centre For Excellence.'

Miracle Foundation works with almost 600 NGOs all over the world, 40 NGOs in India and out of these, they have chosen only 4 NGOs as their Partner!! Out of 4, one is Socio Economic Development Trust! Great Going, isn’t it?

The organisations chosen to be developed as a Centre for excellence would be Miracle India’s associate children's homes, who have experience in implementing

the Miracle method, have shown a consistent progress, have a willingness as well as wherewithal to run such a knowledge and resource centre.

Miracle says, "Socio Economic Development Trust – SEDT is a

05Noble Initiative

Social media is often blamed for consuming too much time of today's youth. However, few youth used this same social media platform to built a team of more than 40 people from all around the city for the night of 31st December to Serve tea to the Mumbai Police through 'A Cup of Smile' initiative.'A Cup of Smile Team' as they called themselves served more than 800 cups of tea to on duty policemen at Marine Drive during the New Year night. The group was divided into smaller teams and assigned specifi c location covering the entire length of marine drive area where there was maximum patrolling. They started at around 9pm and went upto 3am. Volunteers not only served tea to the police but also off ered them biscuits and chocolates and wished them a 'Happy New Year'. This tea brought a smile on the face on the policemen and also gave them few moments of relaxation from their stressful duty. Mumbai Police were overwhelmed by this kind gesture towards them. The entire funding for this initiative was raised by contributions of volunteers and well wishers. Inspired by this initiative a few other youth did similar such initiatives at areas like Thane, Chatrapati Shivaji Terminus and Gateway of India.

06 Fun Learning

In today’s technology driven world, children have access to the latest gadgets on a daily basis. Their young age enables them to quickly learn how to use technology. These young

techno-savvy children are called digital natives, quite aptly so.

Create Vs. Consume

When children use technology, they are consumers of work done by others. It is like reading a book someone else has written. The household computer is more like the all-in-one toy that children use for playing games, exploring interesting content, etc. But the real value of the computer is as a powerful tool for innovation and creativity. Learning to program enables children to become creators -- Use technology to express their ideas, learn new skills, hone their minds. Computer programming or coding allows children to create their own games, animate their own stories, build their own apps, websites. From consumers, they become creators of technology.

Why learn?

There is a perception that coding is a highly specialised, technical skill meant for students who are inclined towards science and maths. But when we teach children to code, we are not teaching them to all become computer engineers

when they grow up. Coding builds essential problem-solving abilities, analytical and structural thinking skills. These are invaluable life-skills regardless of what professions children choose when they grow up.

Age-appropriate technologies

That said, its important to teach children technologies that are age- appropriate. Using professional tools to teach children is not effective. But extensive research globally over the last decade has resulted in the creation of a variety of tools to teach children programming – these are called visual programming languages – where commands can be dragged and snapped together to form the program or the set of instructions for the computer to follow. Some popular examples are Scratch by Massachusetts Institute of Technology, MIT App Inventor by Google, Tynker, Code Studio & App Lab by code.org, etc.

How robots fi t in

While robotics is a big buzz word today, at the heart of smart robots are programs or logic that make them work like they do. Programmable robot platforms like Lego WeDo, Lego Mindstoms, Plezmo, etc. today play a big role in teaching children how computer programs control most advanced

modern day machines. So learning about robots should be a combination of learning the mechanics about the structure of the robots, the electronic components like sensors and the program to make it work. This year, introduce your child to computer programming and start a journey of learning and creating with computers. Children can follow the steps provided here to build their fi rst computer program! Put your coding caps on. Code to Learn, Code for Fun!

Building your fi rst computer program

Here is a fun activity to teach your child to build his/her very fi rst computer program. Some basics –What is a computer program?A computer program is list of instructions we want the computer to follow. What is a programming language? Two people need to know a common language to be able to talk to each other. The computer can understand

instructions in certain languages called ‘programming languages’. So, to make the computer understand our instructions, we need to learn such a language - like Scratch Programming and write programs in it.What is a Scratch program like?A Scratch program is like a play taking place on a stage. You are the programmer-- the director of the play. Choose your actors (called sprites) and give them scripts (instructions) and watch your program in action by clicking on the Green Flag!

How your signature describes your personality? Human is a highly evolved and complex species. As we know, the programming he received from his parents is almost the entire basis of all his behavior in the future. So, pain, pleasure, comfort, appreciation, love, feeling of security, fear, scolding, rejection, infl uence of mother, father, wife, children and many more aspects can be seen through the signature.

T o the trained graphologist, a signature is as good as having the person standing in front of him!

We are taught to write in a certain way when we are young. However, as we get older and form into distinct personalities, our hand writings begin to bear a distinct impression of their strengths and weaknesses and to make positive changes in our lives. But the signature is the only formation in the writing which is consciously formed by the writer. Hence, it bears the most distinct impression of his personality and mindset. Even the law accepts the uniqueness of the signature and thus our signature can represent us in all our transactions.

Some of us simply copy our parent’s signature while many of us spend hours trying to ‘design’ a signature when young. One way or another, we try our best to put our essence in those one or two words. musician has a signature shaped like an instrument or like musical notes. A footballer might have one looking like a football! Pele, in fact, does have a sign shaped like wise!

A signature mainly shows us the ‘public face’ of the writer. It also gives us a fair idea of his family and professional life.

To study the signatures, same as handwriting, we need to consider the size, shape, slant, placement and spacing and the legibility of the signature as a whole and of the individual letters that form it.

Now let us understand scientifi cally the factors related to the signature:• Size : 15-20% bigger sign than normal writing is a healthy

sign.

• Location: (refer the fi gure) 1. Connected to the past, Need support, will not take risk. 2. Calculative about risk/security, will decide as per

situation. 3.Result oriented.• Legible signature: The person is showing clean face in

public.• Illegible signature: Doesn’t show what he is. Has

non-conformance in views, beliefs, ideas and action• Placement of the letters:

Let our example be -Mr. Arjun Gajanan SatputeWhere,A- is for himselfG- is for his fatherS- is for his mother and,atpute- is for his family and work

It is same with the female too. But considering Indian culture, her name is changed. Where references change to:

Middle initial- for husband and First letter of surname- for mother in law

Now let us have a look at basic 10 samples:1. An ideal sign. The person is giving respect, taking good

care of the family, will do the same with his profession. He balances both and is successful.

2. Unnecessary attachment make relation stressful. Not able

to free himself from the parents.3. AGS written one upon other- Father dominates son and

mother dominates both.4. Writers initial is bigger than rest, he gives importance to

self. If it is too big, it is exaggeration.5. Father’s presence absent. Did not get love and care from

father. So does not give that in return.6. Will hide behind mother. Mother/Wife very strong.7. Only name- Is self focused and has his own style of

working.8. Only initials- not able to defi ne the profession. Students

not interested in studies. Not successful.9. Ascending signature and stroke, both, are positive, result

oriented. About 15 degree is good.10. Descending sign and stroke means he is tired. Not having

healthy image about self

Athashrians at Akashwani programAkashvani, Pune invited Athashrians to celebrate the fi rst day of 2018 with children living in orphanage at Akashvani. Our Athashrians played, interacted, sang, danced and more with these children and gave away some nice gifts too! Akashvani wished to create a bridge between senior citizens and the little kids where they could interact with each other in a happy environment. This unique initiative turned out quite well.

The programme organised by Akashwani Pune was conducted very well. The children were so

happy to meet 'aaji and aajoba'. They interacted with us enthusiastically about their hobbies and about their school etc. We played antakshari together. I want to thank Employees of Akashwani and Athashri Homes for this wonderful opportunity.
