F amilies who decide not to pursue a private

education for their kids often believe some-

thing they have heard or there's something

they intrinsically believe about them. Here are

four myths that may help you view private schools in a

new way:

1. They're only for the rich.

While it's a fact that independent schools are chosen more often by families from higher income brackets, it's also true that a proportion of students at private schools receive financial aid. Also, many families have their children's educations partially funded by grand-parents as an investment in the future.

2. They're not the "real world."

That's true. The independent school culture is counter-cultural in the sense that it runs opposite of the often toxic values of popular culture. However, independent schools do prepare kids to navigate in the real world.

3. Boarding schools are for problem kids.

Boarding schools are normal practice for families on the East and West coasts but in the South, with the far less density of them, sending kids away to school is perceived as "something is wrong." This is not the truth. According to the National Association of Independent Schools, private therapeutic schools are different from college-prep schools, and it's important to recognize the difference.

4. They are only for really smart kids.

Truth be told, there is a segment of students with learning differences in many independent schools. It's true that "really smart" kids graduate from indepen-dent schools, but the thought is that private schools create the optimum conditions for emphasizing each student's native intelligence.

School Updates ...Harding Academy (Nashville) gets a new

head of school in July 2016. David Skeen takes over

vate school in Fort Worth, Texas. Skeen comes to

Harding following a national search led by Carney

Sandoe & Associates. Skeen is currently complet-

ing his role as Middle School Head at Canterbury

School in Greensboro, N.C. ... Battle Ground Academy (Franklin) has adopted a new strate-

gic plan, the results of consultations with profes-

sionals, educators, administrators and parents. The

new plan is outlined in the school's publication,

Echo, which can be viewed online at battlegroun-

dacademy.org/echo ... The Daugh W. Smith Middle

School at Harpeth Hall (Nashville) gets a

new director when Judi O'Brien succeeds Mary Lea

Bryant after seven years in the position. O'Brien

takes over July 1, 2016 ... In August 2016 St. Bernard Academy (Nashville) celebrates

the 150th Anniversary of the of the school. Founded

by the Sisters of Mercy, the school plans to high-

light the upcoming school year by showcasing its

heritage and its role in current curriculum and

activities ... University School of Nash-ville is in the midst of

ademic excellence and sus-

Should You Choose a Faith-Based School?Unlike public schools, private schools can combine their academic programs with spiritual guidance which is an appealing aspect to many parents concerned about their kids being "out there" in the world. Here are a few points to consider:

Q: What are the unique features of a faith-based school?

A: The learning is influenced by faith. With all subject areas, schools that are faith-based (and there are numerous ones here in Middle Tennessee) infuse the faith perspective into everything their students do.

Q: What are the benefits of a faith-based school?

A: For families where faith is a priority, the school becomes a partner in helping their children develop an intimate understand-ing of and connection to their faith. But it’s not about indoctrina-tion — different theories, world views and ideologies are intro-duced and framed next to the student’s belief system. This helps kids to become free thinkers and respectful of other faiths.

Q: How do I know if a faith-based school is a good fit for my child?

A: Parents have to look for what best matches the environment in their home. That may be a cultural, religious or pedagogical decision. They should be asking themselves, "How does my child learn best? What sort of schools match up to our faith system?" Parents also need to consider the spectrum of different religious orders. For instance, Christianity has several denominations, so they need to look into that detail when considering faith-based schools.
