PORT SAINT JOHN ANNUAL REPORT 2014
We’re on the map – in every sense of the phrase.
Through Tropical Shipping and MSC, Port Saint John is
connected to 350 ports around the world. That means
New Brunswick goods, many of them from locally owned
businesses, can get to the global market by passing through
our waters.
Last August, TransCanada announced their intention to send
more than 1.1 million barrels per day of western crude east,
terminating in Saint John via the proposed Energy East
Pipeline Project. The project would include a $300-million
marine terminal, boosting employment and driving business to
our region.
In 2013, we celebrated a quarter-century of cruise. Every
event was met with enthusiasm, from cruise lines, crew
members, passengers and the community. We can’t think of a
better way to usher in the next quarter-century.

PORT SAINT JOHN ANNUAL REPORT 2014
To converge is to meet. Meeting with stakeholders,
meeting the community, meeting our goals – these are
ways we converge. Two years later, our new branding
has gone from fresh to firm, cementing Port Saint
John as a local institution and global player. It came
with three guiding themes to underscore everything
we do: inclusion, establishing the Port as an asset, and
renewing our infrastructure for the future.
In 2013, the Port experienced unprecedented growth.
More than numbers on paper, these figures embody
the drive an entire network has to succeed. Port Saint
John is a small team that is just 30 people strong.
But, it’s the strength of our team propelling the Port
forward. Outside our walls, the Port community at
large is working toward the same goal – grow business
through the Port.
The results are tangible. You see them on a weekly
basis as Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC)
and Tropical Shipping visit the inner harbour, cranes
bowing to meet containers. You see them in the tonnes
of potash travelling by rail to the waterfront. You see
them in the faces of students seeing old school buses
recycled, learning more about the Port on one of our
education tours.

CONTAINERS
In 2013, Port Saint John saw unprecedented growth in its
container sector. Tonnages increased by 60 per cent over
2012 statistics at year end.
Last year marked MSC’s first full year calling the Port on
a weekly basis. Their ships and colourful containers have
become familiar sights in our harbour. 2013 also saw the
Port’s relationship with long-time stakeholder Tropical
Shipping evolve as they set up a new office on Port property.
Everything from toys and electronics to frozen pizza and
French fries has been shipped through the Port.
Container service: we’ve got it squared-away.
Global connections to more than 350 ports worldwide, reefer and LCL/FCL service to Florida and the Caribbean, easy access to Central Canadian and U.S. East Coast markets, and experience serving customers large and small over the long term.

At Port Saint John, we’re fueling for the future. In August, TransCanada put Saint John on the map as they announced plans for their Energy East Pipeline Project. The proposed project, accompanied by a $300 million investment from TransCanada and Irving Oil for a marine terminal, will generate $2.8 billion additional gross domestic product for New Brunswick during the six years of development and 40 years of operation.
Stakeholders like Irving Oil and Canaport LNG have made Saint John an energy hub – poised to become the Calgary of the east. We’re here for them.
We’re the region’s largest break bulk handling Port. We have a dedicated terminal, along with ample open and warehouse space on the Port’s west side.
The port offers a complete break bulk/project cargo program,
customizable to meet our client’s business objectives. Some of our
largest projects include moving cargo for the North East Gateway
& Neptune Offshore LNG Projects and transporting turbines for the
Point Lepreau Nuclear Generating Station.

these products are naturally derived or recycled for

We have two state-of-the-art terminals, bustling with visitors during the cruise season. Uptown Saint John has also been transformed, with new businesses starting and thriving in the city core.
Last September, we gave our two millionth passengers a signature
hometown welcome, along with bottles of New Brunswick blueberry
jam for the first 1,000 passengers off the ship. We also gave out 300
cupcakes in record time to the local community – a thank you gift for
their support on the 25th anniversary of the first ship call.
We brought the glamour of cruise to the community with
Revel at the Lido, a Great Gatsby-sized (and themed) celebration to
close the season.
CRUISE
After 25 years, it isn’t difficult to see how cruise has transformed the community.
We’re the fourth-largest cruise port in Canada.

VENUES
The state-of-the-art terminals, completed in 2009 and 2012, have made a name
for themselves as sophisticated event venues in the community. Port Saint John
Venues have played host to a variety of special events, like the Uptown Saint
John Live Life Awards, or Economic Development’s Innov8 Awards, a meeting of
forward-thinking New Brunswick minds. The Port has also become known as the
premier spot for a waterfront wedding in the Uptown core.

At the end of 2013, the Port launched an education plan for area schools. Since then, we’ve brought more than 400 students and teachers down to experience the Port up close.
And we mean up close.
Students are able to see the red cranes from underneath and
drive mere feet from containers. We couldn’t do this without our
stakeholders: PotashCorp, American Iron and Metal and Logistec.
Their support allows young minds into the inner workings of the Port,
sending students scrambling toward the bus windows for a better
look at the inside of the potash shed or a close-up of crushed cars
headed for the metal shredder.
Our third annual Community Day, a great success with more than
3,500 people in attendance, took place in June. Community Day
brings our Port community and the community at large together for
an afternoon of fun. The event raised $10,000 for PALS (Partners
Assisting Local Schools), providing children in need with the tools
to learn.
