1 Setting up the software When you setup the PSM-software from the file PSM_1_5_2_1.msi (or later versions), you must remove the earlier versions from the windows control panel. When all versions have been removed, you can setup the latest version.
When setting up the software, the program will ask for directory. The default directory is C:, but the user can give the desired directory, as it has been done in the example.
The .Exe file is in the Bin directory together with the ini and other setup files. Don’t be surprised or confused when seeing a large number of files in the bin directory, the software is meant for many similar devices and all necessary files are there. The data files are in data directory.
The main setup data is in two files in the BIN directory (ini and npf), which are located in the user defined place, D:\programfiles\Noptel\PSM\bin, for example

2 Ini and Npf files The files where the measurement environment and operation is defined are named *.npf and *.ini
*.ini file contains data for the computer environment
*.npf file contains data for the measurement environment
The .ini file can be edited, if required for setting application related data. Some data will be written from the PSM program

Npf file defines the parameters and other related data

3 Start operation Connect the selected devices to the PC and turn power on
Select the device type (PSM / PSMR)
Select the number of devices to run
Select the communication ports
Select the baud rates
Select the path to the directory
Start operation by clicking TEST-icon
PSM-icon becomes active
Click the PSM-icon to continue

4 Confirmation from the unit After the start the PSM definition window comes active and the program reads all necessary data from the unit. When the identification data is read and shown in the window, the unit is ready to measurement.
If the data reading fails, an error message appears. Check power supply and connections and try again.

5 Measurement There are two ways to continue: start the measure or change setup
Or you can always return to the general startup
If the setup has already been made, you can go to measurement, otherwise it is recommended to check the setup first
Note: during this phase the program reads the stored parameters from the npf file and writes these parameters top the device. The parameters in the EEPROM are not used, if they differ from the parameters in the file. The calibration parameters are not changed.
In the main window you can:
• see the signal power
• see the raw values
• see the calculated values
• see the buffer size
• see X/Y display
• see time-display
• start measurement (raw data or calculated data)
• stop measurement
• scale or skew the displays (select by pushing the right button of the mouse)
If recording is selected, you can see the red dot in the start icon
During the measurement you can go to setup and change settings, however it is often recommended that you stop measurement before changing settings

6 Setting up the PSM-200 device
In the PSM-200 setup window you can:
• read parameters from the device • write parameter settings to the device • load settings from file • save settings to file • start measurement (normal or raw data) • stop measurement • load permanent settings from the device
Device parameters have divided to separate windows:
• base • filter • interface • addition
Study the meaning and use of the parameters from the operator’s manual before using them

7 Setting up the PSM-R device
In the PSM-R setup window you can:
• write parameter settings to the device
• load settings from file
• save settings to file
• start measurement (normal or raw data)
• stop measurement
Study the meaning and use of the parameters from the operator’s manual before using them

8 Recording
The last setup window is for recording
There you can define:
• Type of recording
• Name of file
• Number of saved measurements
• Threshold levels
• Recording data precision
• Comments
The recording modes are:
• n samples from the start of the measurement
• n samples from the stop of measurement
• continuous measurement
• threshold measurement

In threshold measurement only the measurements exceeding the given limits will be recorded.
If level is 1 mm, when ever the difference to the reference is more than 1 mm, the result will be recorded. If the result stays stable for half second, the new reference will be set.
That data is recorded to the directory given in the ini-file (C:\programfiles2\PSM\data)

The data is in two files:
• topic and settings (.npf)
• measurement data (.txt)
The last recorded data is in the files named as given in the setup
The previous data is in numbered files
The data file can have one or more measurements in the same table
In case of two or more units the data is separated by the device number
The program uses Windows clock. That can cause confusion with the times, while the clock is not capable to separate all measurements. The main timing comes from the unit, where the transmit clock is quite stable
From the text files the data can be read to s spreadsheet or other program for further handling

9 Multiple units measurement
In the all-window all selected measurements are shown at the same time, each in its own window
