1 PSRG 2019 Summer Picnic Our summer picnic could not have been better! Set-up the day before went smoothly with assistance of Mike and Trina Rees and the use of their pickup (as well as mine), for transporting tables and chairs to and from R&R Rentals. Saturday the V8s and club members began to arrive one by one. By 11:30 we had a large initial group. Dickey’s Catering appeared right on time with a menu featuring salads, baked beans, pulled pork and roasted chicken. Everybody agreed they were a terrific choice. A second wave of members showed up about 1:30 after attending memorial services for John Christensen in Seattle. In all, there were 21 Early V8s and 75 people in attendance! Several members who haven’t been around much the past few years even made an appearance. The entrees and sides were delicious and plentiful, yet we did manage to send some surplus home with various folks. Surely it was put to good use. Then came a great surprise! Meandering down our driveway came a fully restored 1961 Ford farm tractor. It was a huge hit with the crowd. Bev explained to me: the day before (after I had put up the club banner at the entrance to our street) a neighbor was driving by when he noticed it. He drove up to our house, introduced himself to Bev and said he lived only a few blocks from us. Bev invited him to bring it to our event. So…. this is how our new-found friends, Dean (and wife Diane) ended up showing all of us another restored Ford. We also fired up the PSRG flathead engine that Scott and Mark Keenholts display at our Swap Meet and other car events - thanks again fellows. I would like to thank the Cascade group for joining PSRG in sharing their cars and making this picnic even more enjoyable. At the end of the day when it was time to dismantle tents, fold up chairs and put away the club engine, as usual many attendees pitched in to ultimately make this another successful summer picnic. Thanks again! Elmo Lewis .................See page 3 for more Puget Sounds Volume 50 Issue 10 October 2019

PSRG 2019 Summer Picnic

Our summer picnic could not have been better! Set-up the day before went smoothly with assistance of Mike and Trina Rees and the use of their pickup (as well as mine), for transporting tables and chairs to and from R&R Rentals.

Saturday the V8s and club members began to arrive one by one. By 11:30 we had a large initial group. Then came a great surprise! Meandering down our driveway came a fully restored 1961 Ford farm tractor. It was a huge hit with the crowd. General Meeting Minutes

Mark Keenholts

The prime time car show season is drawing to an end as well as my reign as the President. We’ve got our annual banquet planned this year for Saturday, November 23rd at 6:00 pm at The Old Spaghetti Factory in Lynnwood (see details in this month’s issue on page 12). As we did last year, the entire meal will be covered by the club. Please sign up at the next meeting or rsvp to Mark Keenholts at [email protected] swap meet continues to move forward and we’ve got our poster design done, along with updates to the website (monroeswapmeet.com). The Swap Meet Chairman’s job is crucial to our success as a club, so please consider taking on that roll for next year. Elections will be held next meeting, so please plan on attending (especially if you’ve been nominated). Dave White

The food and the weather were fantastic! The 2020 Swap Meet is well in progress with the art work already developed. We still need a Chairperson to step in as David White is giving it up after several years. Most of the organization is still on board , so the work is progressing.Nominations to fill club offices are open. We need President and two Board members. Many names were suggested at the meeting. Bob Merz is taking over as Treasurer. It was announced the Flathead Reliability Run to Monitor Washington will take place this Saturday. It was also noted that we are receiving “Spoof ” e mails requesting different purchases. Did you ever lose a hubcap while driving ? they always pass me by, well here is the next level

In August 1924 at the Caerphilly Mountain Hill Climb in South Wales, Cordon Bleu broke the hill record on the first ascent but on the second run the nearside rear axle broke on his Bresica Bugatti. There was a look of pure astonishment on Raymond’s face as he watched his rear wheel overtake the car. This picture was seen around the world in newspapers of the day and is still regarded by some as one of the most famous photographs of all time. The picture has been used for a variety of purposes over the decades including, in recent years, an advertisement for holiday insurance and on the album cover of a French rock group.

Despite the rough track, Raymond managed to keep control of the car and no one was hurt. He developed his cars with superchargers in association with Amherst Villiers and this partnership eventually led to the develop-ment of the legendary ‘White Riley’. In 1924 ERA Ltd was formed and Mays was the No.1 driver. Before long, class records were being set up at Brooklands and Mays won the Nuffield Trophy race at Donington Park, the first road race ever held in England. From then on ERA and Raymond Mays achieved world fame.

Sunshine report for September, 2019.

Hello fellow V-8 Club Members. For the most part we are doing OK again this month. However a few of us are having age related problems, and that is particularly true of L.D. Charff who I hope by the time you read this will be out of the hospital and on his way to feeling better. Please include him in your prayers for the next month while he recovers from an unusual problem.

New Club Member Profile Questionnaire from Peter Fallert 1. Does your significant other enjoy the hobby? How? we are newly married, so she’s just learning about my gear head. she does like cars though.2. When did you start, why?

I bought my first car when I was 13 years old. It was a 31 Chevrolet 5 window coupe. it was the wrong car for a kid because of all the interior wood that needed replacing. It should have been a Model A. I learned a lot though.

3. Favorite car you sold and wish you had it back? Why?A 1948 M G TC. It was a very rare racing version of a rare car.A 1948 Ford 2dr that I had in high school. I just purchased a 46 2dr.

New Club Member Profile Questionnaire from Peter Fallert 4. Current “almost perfect” cars. (none are perfect) List any awards. I just retired, so I’m just getting started on my cars

5. Current major projects and status. 1938 Buick, not started. 1918 Model T touring, gathering parts. 1946 Ford 2dr sedan, gathering parts, stripping off previous owners junk. 6. Current minor projects. (drivable but needs a little more than a paint job) I wish! 7. Hook Awards received or eligible events you were able to keep secret. N/A

8. How many classic cars do you own and how many could be driven to a PSRG club meeting? 5, None

9. Current dream “classic” car you wish you owned. 32 Ford 5 window coupe, or 32 2dr sedan

10. Do you do most of your own work or just the minor stuff. What types of things do you do yourself. I try to do as much of my own work myself. All mechanical. welding, still learning. some upholstery. electrical. I leave the paint to the experts, its too expensive to mess up.

11. Family information such as significant other, children, grand kids and other details.Wife, Linda, married 3 months. Son Paul, 47, lives in Seattle. Son Adam 37, moving to LA.

12. Profession, either current or retired from.

13. Significant road trips you have completed. Drove to Minnisota. Drove all over the SW. but not in classic cars

14. What are your feelings regarding non-stock modifications? Which mods are acceptable? If its a rare classic it should be left stock, but it also should be driven, not a trailer queen. I think some people go overboard making a museum piece. non rare cars can be modified to enhance safety and drivability, but keeping the original look.

15. Club offices held, awards received and committees chaired. none

16. Activity you would like to see the club organize. I don’t have enough time in to comment on that .
