PSS PAC MEETING MINUTES Pemberton Secondary School 11-JUNE-2018 6:51pm | Meeting called to order by Lisa Shippit In Attendance Lisa Shippit-Chair, Maria Duncan-Secretary, Tanya Richman–Director at Large, Barb Turrin-Treasurer. Krista Brynjolfson-Principal, Meredith Gardner-DPAC, Parent: Trish Penney Absent:, Patricia Westerholm-Trustee. Approval of Minutes The minutes from our previous meeting held on May 9, 2018, approved by Maria Duncan and seconded by Meredith Gardner. Noted: In the minutes, section under DPAC Discussion, the name should read “Lisa McCullough” not “Lisa Shippit”. Parent Talk – Tanya Richman- How Parents Can Help Navigate Their Child through High School. Good idea to put an article in the Pique newspaper highlighting some of the awesome stuff our students do. We can build on this and go over it again in September. Article would talk about what goes on at the school, various clubs and teams, etc. An idea to have an agenda app available for cellphones. It would consist of a school wide app that would include daily announcements, upcoming events, practice times, etc. Let parents know that PSS teachers are accessible. Stay involved in your child’s education, call the school, ask for feedback, and be involved in your child’s education. Chris Burns has hosted a “Parenting Teens” workshop in Whistler. It is a 5-part workshop put on for 5 weeks. Trish Penney, a PSS parent, saw him and will forward information to Meredith Gardner. Will look into maybe having him up in Pemberton.

Approval of Minutes

The minutes from our previous meeting held on May 9, 2018, approved by Maria Duncan and seconded by Meredith Gardner.

Good idea to get PSS cell phone usage regulations out to parents (this was mentioned at the BBQ, and will be readdressed again in September). Consistency on how it cell phone usage is managed in the school is key.

Chairs Report

Lisa Shippit: PSS-PAC Chair

Lisa introduced the members of PAC.

The school BBQ went really well this year, many people attended, and feedback on the evening was good. Reiterated that PAC is not really a fundraising entity of the school, but more of a round table discussion involving parents and the Principal/Administration.

Treasurer’s Report

Barb Turin: PSS-PAC Treasurer

Finished the Gaming Account Summary Report (attached). The report highlights all that we have done this year, and is what we submit in order to receive our gaming grant funds for the year.

Barb is retiring this year; a replacement is required.

NOTED: If we do not have a PAC, the school does not get the gaming grant funds of approximately $5,000 to $6,000 a year. These monies go towards the Library, athletics uniforms, etc. There are some monies in another account; one hundred and fifty dollar a year is acquired from the School Board to run PAC, accumulation over the years currently is approximately $1100.

Noted that each year $75 is paid out to BC PAC.

DPAC Report

DPAC Rep: Meredith Gardner

Minutes from the DPAC report are not officially out yet.

DPAC meeting attendance has been low. Would be good to have a representative from Signal Hill, and have DPAC play a more effective role.

Meredith receive an email from Lisa McCullough, which she read. Communication between the school/teacher and parents was highlighted as a key ingredient to a student’s success.

SD48 teachers representative mentioned that teachers are setting aside time for Parent Teacher interviews and some parents are not showing up. The opposite was also noted, that there is not enough time slots for parents to see their child’s teachers at PSS. She mentioned that there is a bit of confusion because of the change to the curriculum and expectations.

DPAC reps suggested to go back to their PACs and ascertain how to have more input from parents, how to engage our population to get more communications and support for parents and teachers. Krista Brynjolfson noted that the school would look at what may be done differently next year.

Action Item: District wide request to have parents more involved, interested in exploring more/better communication options between parents and teachers.

Tanya Richman suggested on having a monthly PSS feature in the Pique. Better marketing for the school, highlighting the numerous wonderful things going on at PSS.

Noted a few glitches with the school schedule.

New Business

New school mascot uniforms – this was mentioned at the BBQ. Currently have a devils costume mascot.

School logo wear: Suggested to get an updated logo. Once a new logo is chosen, a different mascot may be used.

We could do the sweatpants with the letters PSS on the backside. Krista Walden mentioned that the supplier does not make that kind, but we would be able to use Krista’s order sheet.
