Acid Rock A new hybrid of rock and roll was created Named after LSD (hallucinogen) 100s of artists appeared on the scene

News spread quickly across the country College-age baby boomers were main audience

The Hippie Culture Most were middle class college gradsRebelled against capitalism and attacked the materialistic American culture Rejected their parents way of life

Long hair (I want the cops to sneer and the old ladies to swear and the businessmen to worry nudity (everyone is equal without clothes on) Challenged rules and hoped to embrace the freedom of individual expression

Drugs Turned to mind-expanding drugs to enhance their individual potential LSD (lysergic acid diethylamide) defined the hippie experience Legal in the US until 1966Emphasized melting shapes and vibrant colours

Attempted to create a counter-culture Drugs were viewed as a way to reach a new level of thinking Haight-Ashbury was the central gathering spot

The Music Rock bands began creating Acid Rock The Grateful Dead were a major part of the psychedelic/acid rock movement

The Doors Led by lead singer Jim Morrison Rebelled against the norms

Jefferson AirplaneWhite Rabbit

One pill makes you larger and one pill makes you smallAnd the ones that mother gives you Don't do anything at allGo ask Alice When she's ten feet tallAnd if you go chasing rabbits And you know you're going to fallTell 'em a hookah smoking caterpillar Has given you the callCall Alice When she was just small

When men on the chessboard Get up and tell you where to goAnd you've just had some kind of mushroomAnd your mind is moving slowGo ask Alice I think she'll know

When logic and proportion Have fallen sloppy deadAnd the White Knight is talking backwardsAnd the Red Queen's "off with her head!"Remember what the doormouse said;"Feed YOUR HEAD... Feed your head"

Light shows simulated an LSD experiencePosters featured a unique style of distorted, melted letters against a vibrant background of wild colours

Promoted the LP (experience) Appeared on FM radio (AM was pop) Spread across the nation and the world very quickly Beatles jumped on board (Sgt Pepper and Magical Mystery Tour) Pink Floyd (Dark Side of the Moon)

The Decline of Hippiedom Counter culture was short lived Many became wasted addicts, isolated and detached from reality Even music suffered (artists that were against the man signed deals with major labels Beginning of the end
