Choosing the location for your postgraduate training is one of the most challenging decisions you will assume, with an endless list of programs to consider. We are confident that training in our residency programs will allow you to continue your medical education and receive broad-based preparation that will assist you in reaching your potential as an excellent physician. Our faculty is as diverse as our residents and many of them have years of experience in training medical students and residents.

As the Director of Medical Education, I congratulate our candidates interested on select Psychiatry as the specialty of your choice. Recognizing the validity of the principles of osteopathic medicine, principally that of treating the whole person, our program will supply the opportunity for the resident to gain a thorough understanding of the social, cultural, behavioral, spiritual, and biologic dimensions that play in the health of the individual.

Our residents must be educated to understand and integrate osteopathic values and philosophy into all clinical and patient care activities. The osteopathic concept of health care emphasizes that the human body is a unit in which structure and function are mutually and reciprocally interdependent; that the body, through a complex equilibrium system, tends to be self-regulatory and self healing; that adequate function of body systems depends upon the unimpeded flow of blood and nerve impulses; that the musculoskeletal elements comprise a body system, whose importance far exceeds that of providing framework support; and that there are somatic components of disease that are not only manifestations of, but are also important contributing and/or maintaining factors in the diseased area as well as areas distant from the diseased part.

Residents are evaluated in a manner that emphasizes their ability to be compliant with the AOA competences in the areas of the Osteopathic Philosophy and Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine, patient care, medical knowledge, practiced-based learning and improvement, interpersonal skills and communication, professionalism, and systems-based practice. Family-oriented comprehensive care with demonstrated emphasis on continuity shall be an integral part of our curricular component, and disease prevention is the cornerstone of osteopathic family practice and shall be given major emphasis throughout our educational program.

Upon the successful completion of our residency program, our graduates will be prepared to provide comprehensive osteopathic health care to the individual in the context of the family and the community. 7. Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (AOA)

Core Competencies

Our four (4) years in length residency training program in General Psychiatry is currently accredited by the AOA for three positions per educational level and started in the academic year 2010/2011. The application process will be done through the ERAS website, and applicants will be selected via the National Matching Services.

General Psychiatry encompasses training in adult and child psychiatry. All residents will complete a first year consisting of four months primary care medicine, two months in neurology, and six months of psychiatry, followed by three years general psychiatry Osteopathic principles and practices shall be incorporated throughout the program.

Our Psychiatry Residency Program provides a wide-ranging learning experience featuring many exceptional opportunities and an excellent didactic training. This diverse learning experience prepares future psychiatrists to be capable of providing a comprehensive mental health care, assume leadership roles in the practice of medicine in the context of the community and contribute to the growing knowledge base of the specialty of psychiatry. Our goal is to supply our residents with excellent and balanced training, preparing them for careers in academic, research, community and clinical settings.

The program values the creation and realistic application of new knowledge; distinction in teaching and evidence-based clinical practice; and the care of underprivileged populations, including the seriously mentally ill and the underserved.  We consider that psychiatrists are physicians who, as specialists in brain and behavioral sciences, have a responsibility to advocate for quality psychiatric care and to reduce stigmas linked with mental illness, through specialty practice, and performing consultation to other physicians and mental health care providers.

Deciding the residency program and specialty for your postgraduate training is a challenging and rewarding experience. Graduate Medical Education is a process whereby clinical competence is acquired through caring for patients under the supervision of proficient committed faculty members.

Each level of training is defined by a set of core competencies that the resident is expected to master. Our residents are evaluated through an approach that highlights their capability to be compliant with these competences in the areas of patient care, medical knowledge, practiced-based learning and improvement, interpersonal skills and communication, professionalism, systems-based practice and Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine. As standards are met, residents are given greater independence and responsibility in patient care, bearing in mind that ultimate responsibility rests with clinical faculty.

How to Apply

We accept applications only through ERAS (Electronic Residency Application Service). Please, do not submit applications through e-mail or fax.

The deadline to submit your application through ERAS is December 31, 2010.  You are welcome to apply after the deadline, but we cannot guarantee that your application will be reviewed by the Selection Committee in time to set up an interview.

Our program will be interviewing from Monday thru Friday, from November through January 21 of the following year, with the exception of several days during this period due to meetings and conferences that the Director must attend.  We will be closed for the Thanksgiving Holiday and we will not be interviewing during the Christmas and New Year break.

Licensure

•Base Salary: $ 42.000.00 (PGY-1 or OGME-1). The Salary shall be increased by $1,000.00

each additional year of Post-Graduate Medical Education

•Vacation: 20 days Paid Time Off, with program approval (DME, Program Director, and/or Chief

Academic Officer)

•Health Insurance. Medical and hospitalization coverage is provided to Resident at a reduced

cost. Resident chooses one (1) plan among the Medical Plan Options.

•Dental Insurance: Employee/Family plans provided at a reduced rate.

•Life Insurance: Life Insurance is provided at no cost for Resident in the amount of one (1) time

the annual base salary. Supplemental life insurance coverage is available as well as family

supplemental coverage at a nominal free.

•Long Term/Short Term Disability Insurance: Disability Insurance is available at an additional

cost which provides a portion of the monthly income of Resident if Resident should become

disabled.

•Professional Liability Insurance (Malpractice): Malpractice Insurance is provided by hospital at

no cost. The insurance covers Intern and other approved clinical rotations.

•Meals are provided to Resident at no cost while on duty.

•Uniform Allowance: As described in manual, Larkin Community Hospital will provide 2 jackets

in year one.

•ACLS/BLS Certification will be given at Larkin.

•COMLEX Part III Reimbursement

•$ 900.00 for stipend for CME’s and educational materials.

•Residents will have access to NSU-COM libraries via web to the Law and Medical libraries.

•$ 145 for Emergency medicine procedures course financial assistant.

•Payments for OSCE Modules and review sessions approximate value of $2400 payable to

NSUCOM.

LIBRARY

LCH Library currently subscribes with Nova Southeastern University to provide electronic access to a wide variety of online electronic full-text and bibliographic databases. Interlibrary loan service is available for books, journal articles and other publications not available in print. The Medical Library also provides access to audiovisual materials, computer workstations and librarian mediated database searching. The Healthcare System’s Online Health Library at LCH contains 4,000 articles on health and wellness and covers more than 1,500 medical topics. This institution is partner with Adam.Com, one of the most respected and credible online medical resources in the world, to bring you this extensive library of health information. The graduation of well-trained, competent, compassionate interns is our main concern. The Electronic links with NSU and LCH Library provide extensive electronic access to journals and professional publications.

The Library Includes: •Up To Date; Medline; CINAHL; MD Consult; Cochrane Databases;•Clinical Evidence; Current Contents;•Pharmacology/Drug Database; and Complementary/Alternative Medicine.Other teaching materials/equipment:•Computer/printers with internet capabilities in inpatient and outpatient settings; preceptor’s rooms, conference rooms, etc.•Copy resources for preparation of representations, etc.;•Free access to hospital desktop computers with free Internet access;•Various database accesses.

EVALUATION OF THE RESIDENT•Evaluation is an integral part of each resident’s education. It is the process by which teachers assess knowledge, skills and attitudes. There is an on-going evaluation, by assigned faculty, of residents’ performance in every residency related activity (general rotations, continuity clinics, In-House calls, case presentations, seminars, didactics, journals, etc.). •Also nurses, clerical personnel, patients, peers, and the resident him/herself can be consulted to fill out evaluations (ACGME – 360º Evaluation Requirement). •The Competency-Based Evaluation (CBE) document shall be the instrument used by all programs to document achievement of these core competencies.In order for the training program to assess its ability to meet its goals and objectives, it is essential that the program have a comprehensive evaluation process, including formative and summative evaluations of the residents, and an evaluation process of the program and the faculty.

Formative evaluations:These evaluation will occur at the completion of any substantive interaction with a specific faculty member or specific rotation. For each clinical rotation, an evaluation form will be completed by the supervising faculty member. The evaluation form utilized will be one distributed and recommended by the related Osteopathic Board. The faculty is required to complete the form prior to the completion of the rotation and review their impressions directly with the fellow. All completed evaluation forms are returned to the Program Director for review and placed in the resident’s permanent file. During the research phase of training, an evaluation form will be completed by the resident’s research faculty mentor. These evaluations forms will be completed every 4-6 months, reviewed with the resident by the faculty research mentor, and submitted to the Program Director for placement in the resident’s permanent file. Completed evaluation forms submitted to the Program Director will be immediately reviewed upon their receipt. Any forms that contain a rating less than satisfactory in any category will require an immediate conference between the fellow and the Program Director to identify causes for the poor performance and identify means for improving the deficiency. All residents will be required to keep a procedures log, identifying the procedure, date, indication, outcome, complication, and name of supervising physician. A copy of this log will be provided to the Program Director semi-annually for placement in the learner’s file.

Summative Evaluation: The program director must provide a summative evaluation for each resident upon completion of the program. This evaluation must become part of the resident’s permanent record maintained by the institution, and must be accessible for review by the resident in accordance with institutional policies.Evaluations Committee: This committee is asked to monitor the performance of our residents and assess the level of competence for each resident. The committee’s assessment is written and recorded in the program files for future reference purposes. Any adverse judgments or evaluations regarding the resident’s level of performance or competence will first be directed to the Program Director.

Faculty Evaluation: All teaching faculty shall be confidentially evaluated annually. This will include evaluation of teaching ability, clinical knowledge, attitudes, and communication skills. There will be a mechanism for anonymous input by the residents.

Program Effectiveness: In addition, residents will evaluate confidentially the educational effectiveness of the Program once a year in a paper written or via electronic format and at a formal meeting coordinated by the Program Director. Residents’ representatives of each level of training and Faculty will participate in this meeting. Recommendations are taking into account for the improvement of the Training Program.

Resident Evaluation

The program must: provide objective assessments of competence in osteopathic philosophy and OMT, patient care, medical knowledge, practice-based learning and improvement, interpersonal and communication skills, professionalism, and systems based practice; use multiple evaluators (e.g., faculty, peers, patients, self, and other professional staff); document progressive resident performance improvement appropriate to educational level; and provide each resident with documented semiannual evaluation of performance with feedback.

Furthermore, our program uses the electronic evaluation software New Innovations for this purpose. The evaluator for each experience will be identified and the software contacts them via e-mail at the completion and approximately every 5 days after the evaluation is submitted. We will offer evidence either via traditional paper-based evaluation forms or print-outs of electronic evaluations.

**Residents must not advance to the next year of education, or graduate from the program, unless the competence for their level of education in each area is documented. *

From the Basic Standards: The following Core Competencies shall be required of all residents to successfully complete a residency in osteopathic psychiatry.
