“My experience has been interesting and inspiring. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time on the course, and have improved my critical thinking, covered interesting psychological topics and learned advanced skills.” YenMSc Clinical Child Psychology

What our students say “I loved every bit of every module and lecture that I had. It was like a door to a bright, new and extremely exciting world had been opened for me and the possibilities were limitless.”MilaBSc (Hons) Psychology and MSc Research Methods in Psychology

“Studying at ARU is easily one of the best experiences I have ever had. I loved the low student-teacher ratio, which allowed plenty of time for stimulating discussions and the opportunity for me to participate actively in classes. At the same time, the lecturers have their own unique ways of keeping students engaged and making the lectures very interesting.”YeeMSc Research Methods in Psychology

“Studying at ARU has given me a very strong basis of research knowledge that will lead me into a successful research career. This is a big step from entering the university with no confidence, and having no clear career path in mind.”CharlotteBSc (Hons) Psychology and PhD Psychology

Your facilities In our psychology research and teaching spaces you’ll be taught in the latest facilities and use them to put your learning into practice.

• In our EEG lab you can measure and analyse the brain activity occurring in cognitive processes such as language, face perception and learning. In our eye-tracking lab you’ll measure the eye movements people make when reading, studying images or watching videos.

• You can use our experimental testing suite and psychometrics labs to conduct interviews, group studies and psychometric testing.

• Our psychophysiology lab enables you to examine how the body responds to stimuli or tasks by tracking data such as pulse, skin conductance, ECG and respiration.

• In our consumer lab you can investigate visual and tactile influences on product evaluation and consumer choice.

• Our psychoneuroimmunology lab allows us to examine the links between psychological well-being and physical health.

Designed to meet your research needs Our mobile testing equipment lets you take your research out of the lab and into the real world. Our 3D printing facilities allow you to develop prototype products to gauge consumer reactions.

Our research was rated as world leading, both in the UK Government’s 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) and most recently in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF). This places us as one of the top psychology departments in any post-1992 UK University. Some of our recent research projects include:

A study by Dr Roberto Filippi, Dr Fiona Richardson, Professor Peter Bright and other colleagues has found that bilingual children find it easier to concentrate. This suggests that the acquisition of two languages in early childhood benefits their cognitive development and allows them to filter out auditory interference in noisy classrooms.

Dr Helen Keyes research shows that a friend’s face can sometimes grab our attention more than our own, especially when only seen out of the corner of our eye. Our researchers believe that we may be primed to look for familiar faces in a crowd as they are more socially important.

Dr Cathrine Jansson-Boyd is exploring the links between our visual and tactile sensory systems. Her research, which is backed by Unilever, looks at whether tactile “cues” can be used to guide consumers’ visual attention within retail settings.

Dr Jane Aspell has discovered that visual projections of our own heartbeat in a virtual reality set up can generate something similar to an “out of body” experience in healthy people. This demonstrates that the brain’s processing of signals from outside the body contribute to the experience of one’s self.

Our Lived Experience Project (LEP) sees members of the public who have lived with conditions ranging from depression to traumatic brain injury, work with our staff and students to bring their personal experiences to our curriculum.
