PSYCHOLOGY Psychology is the science of the mind and behavior. At Hiram College, the psychology major combines a strong emphasis on research and hands-on opportunities with theory, to prepare students for diverse careers that examine the ways humans and animals think, act, feel and learn. Hiram is home to one of only a few psychology programs in the nation that incorporates actual research into methods and statistics courses. This approach prepares students to use and interpret research and data – skills critical to success after graduation. The on-campus research lab, where students will complete at least three courses before graduation, is equipped with SPSS Statistical software, video taping equipment, facilities for the study of several animal species and more. Building upon in-class research opportunities, students can work one-on-one with department faculty on research. In recent years, students and faculty have collaborated on research projects that examine: stigma, cultural differences in happiness, addiction, autism, athletic identity and lie detection. The Psychology Department offers several paid research opportunities each year. Hiram psychology majors boast high admittance rates into accredited master’s degree programs in counseling. A master’s degree is required for counseling careers, but Hiram students have also succeeded in the following careers with a bachelor’s degree in psychology: • art therapy • science writing • corporate training • political campaigns • youth mentoring • information technology • advocacy • mediation • legal advocacy • Peace Corps/Teach for America (over)
