> lived at the Point )rom the day > as 'orn untilmy edding day 20 years later. ocals called it var=iously the Point, Point (hev and only on o))icialdocuments as the )ull title Point (hevalier used.

>n the $0s, hen > as groing up, Point (hevalieras a uiet 'ac+ater o) Auc+land. :e had noealthy areas or any poor sections. othing sensa=tional happened and you seldom even sa a men=tion o) the su'ur' in either the !erald  or the Star.

?ur home as in :al+er Road, named a)ter theoriginal )amily ho had )armed the hole area. Allthat remained o) their )arm as the )armhouse anda couple o) out'uildings that stood at the top o):al+er Road. @eside the 'am gre a huge daturalily tree hose huge creamy )loers hung tantalis=ingly ust out o) reach o) passing children tryinghard to stretch up and pic+ a 'loom.

he !tate Advances oned our house at num'erB0, a large villa ith a 'ig verandah across the )rontand hal) a doCen steps don to the path. ?ur )amilyspent many hours sitting on the )ront steps4 Mumand ;ad ould pass the time o) day ith neigh= 'ours al+ing up to the shops, and )or the childrenthe verandah as as large as a room and could 'econvened into dolls-houses or )orts.

:hen the ;epression started, ;ad as una'le toget a o' in is'ome, his arti)icial leg )rom the armade it dou'ly di))icult, so they had moved )rom

is'orne to Auc+land here he got or+ as a li)t=man in Dndeans 'uilding.

-ousing as a pro'lem )or several years4 as soonas the )amily, ith )ive children, ere settled in arented house it ould 'e sold. A)ter 20 moves into years my parents ere thrilled to 'e allocatedthe :al+er Road house and they lived there )orover 30 years.

hree more children ere 'orn at the Point andthen one 'y one the older ones married and movedaay. ;ad died and eventually Mum moved into asmall home unit in Mt Ros+ill )or her last years.

here ere large plane trees don our side o):al+er Road. (oming home )rom school e scu)=)led through their leaves and pic+ed o)) 'ig chun+so) 'ar+ )rom the trun+s. !ometimes you couldma+e uite realistic patterns )rom the 'ar+ and ithgreat imagination turn it into animals or people. >nlate autumn the council or+men and their horseand cart came sloly don the street, lopping o))the 'ranches and gathering up dead leaves. At )irstthe trees loo+ed star+ and 'are 'ut it asnEt long 'e)ore spring came and they sprouted and the pro=cess started again.

At the end o) :al+er Road ere paddoc+s and aninner -har'our 'each. Dvery day in summer eclim'ed the stile over the 'ar'ed ire and raced inour togs don the paddoc+s, pic+ing our ay care=)ully across the sampy patch and onto the sand.

Most o) the time as spent in ma+ing huge castlesith ela'orate tunnels )illed ith 'uc+ets o) seaater that disappeared as soon as you poured it in.Mum sometimes came don carrying a shopping 'ag lined ith old erseys and a teapot o) tea made ust 'e)ore she le)t home. !he 'rought a collection

o) cups ithout handles that also served )or drin+=ing 'right orange cordial out o) a vinegar 'ottle.here ere no changing sheds, so e ust put on acardigan and a sunhat hile e played.

A little )urther along )rom our patch o) sand eresteep steps cut into the clay cli)). hese led precari=ously up to the paddoc+s here a local )anner had aherd o) mil+ing cos. Mum sent one o) the chil=dren there each morning to 'uy a gallon o) s+immil+ )or si7pence to supplement the mil+ hichas delivered daily to the door. @eside the )armere gardens4 ros and ros o) neat ca''ages and

lettuces tended 'y a (hinese )amily.

>n later years > read somehere the reason the veg=eta'les gre so ell as that the area had original=ly 'een the site )or the dumping o) the night cans)rom the Mount Al'ert area oday, !elyn9illage covers the )arm and the gardens.

Most o) :al+er Road as ta+en up ith the par+,here great games o) rug'y and hoc+ey ere)ought in the inter and over the summer cric+etand athletics too+ over. :e ere usually e7pectedto play in our on 'ac+ yard 'ut occasionally eould 'e given permission to go and play on the par+ as a special treat.

As e got older, collecting 'ottles in the par+ as agood source o) income. A 'eer 'ottle as orth a penny and a so)t drin+ 'ottle realised tuppence atthe dairyG a trip around the par+ a)ter the games ona !aturday and !unday as good )or nearly a sac+=)ul o) 'ottles to ta+e home and store under thehouse. An >ndian 'ottle-o man used to come aroundevery couple o) ee+s and ;ad ould sho himhere the haul as +ept. he money alays entinto the )amily )inances as e lived on a ar pen=sion that as only paid on the 23rd o) each monthand the e7tra shillings )rom the 'ottle money erevery use)ul.

>n term time e al+ed to Point (hevalier !choolacross the par+ and cut the length o) our trip in hal) 'y doing so. he horrid little 'ron pric+les in thegrass meant e had to ear our sandals, 'ut thatas a small price to pay. Dvery'ody al+ed toschool and a )e came on the tram, 'ut no'odycame 'y car, not even the teachers. >n later yearsmore children had 'i+es to ride 'ut very )e too+them to school. My sister @etty had a 'i+e henshe as 1% so she could help Mum ith the mes=sages, and later she ent aay nursing and > asalloed to ride it.

:hen > as )inishing my )irst year at Pasadena>ntermediate, a polio epidemic started and )rom ovem'er till the end o) the )olloing May holi=days e did not go to school. >t as the start o) along, 'oring summer4 no outings o) any +ind, no pictures or visits to ton and, orst o) all, no dailyvisits to the 'each.

My mother must have had a hard time +eepingthree young children amused. he local nespapers
