Sharing the Dream of Success through EducationEngine Cadet Jhoriel Sanchez of the Mapúa-PTC College of Maritime Education and Training (CMET) believes that education is key to a successful future. As Jhoriel works towards achieving his dreams, he is likewise striving to ensure that his siblings have the opportunity to live out their own dreams, as well. A Marine Engineering major, Jhoriel has already started helping his family financially by supporting his younger sister Lerry’s education. Although Lerry is also a CMET scholar, having been inspired to follow in her older brother’s footsteps, other miscellaneous expenses such as daily allowances and school projects can take its toll on their single-income household with seven children still in school. And here, Jhoriel is happy to help in whatever way he can, especially after having spent seven months this year onboard Northern Marine Management’s Navigator Gas as an Engine Cadet.

As Jhoriel prepares for graduation and the licensure exams scheduled this coming year, he is even more determined to do well, planning to again go onboard NMM’s vessels, but this time as an officer. He dreams of one day being a marine superintendent, something not many Filipinos are able to achieve, but he believes that with hard work and perseverance, anything is possible. His top priority, however, remains to be helping his family, hoping to inspire his four other younger siblings to take up maritime studies and like him, become a future global maritime professional.

PHILCAMSAT’s Alfredo Haboc Appointed as Marina Deputy Administrator Chief Engineer Alfredo G. Haboc, Training Director of PHILCAMSAT, has been appointed by President Benigno Aquino III to the Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) as Deputy Administrator for Regional Concerns effective December 14, 2015. C/E Haboc will be responsible for the review, monitoring and enhancement of safety in domestic shipping, as well as, the coordination and supervision of compliance with the STCW convention across the country.

The appointment is a fitting tribute to C/E Haboc’s technical expertise and his many years of committed service to the industry as Training Director of PHILCAMSAT, former dean of the Mapua-PTC College of Maritime Training and Education (CMET), President of the Philippine Association of Maritime Training Centers and a regular private sector representative to the International Maritime Organization (IMO) technical working meetings in London.

Supporting Youth Financial Literacy As part of its education and livelihood thrusts, PTC-CSJ Foundation supported the annual financial literacy seminar at The Sisters of Mary Schools (SMS)-Philippines’ Adlas (Boystown) and Biga (Girlstown) campuses in Silang, Cavite. Organized in partnership with the Social Enterprise Development Partnerships, Inc. (SEDPI), the financial literacy seminar held on October 23, was attended by a

total of 1,258 Grade 11 students of SMS.

The half-day training enabled the students to learn four basic financial management concepts and skills: the importance of personal finance, budgeting, setting financial goals, and creating a savings plan. Given SMS’ vocational technology curriculum, students in their final year undergo on-the-job training (OJT) opportunities where these financial management concepts can be applied.

Also part of the Foundation’s initiative is its Growing to Great Kids or 3G Program, organized in partnership with Synergeia Foundation, which completed a series of activities with Bayanan Elementary School-Main (BESM) and Lakeview Elementary School (LES) during the last few months of 2015. On September 19, around 200 parents of Grade 1 pupils in the two schools participated in a half-day session on Proper Nutrition and Hygiene with Dr. Rey Aquino as Resource Speaker. The session complemented 3G’s nutrition enhancement/feeding for malnourished pupils of BESM and LES. The teachers of the two Schools likewise underwent two training sessions. “Rekindling the Joy of Teaching” was attended by all BESM and LES teachers, while “Effective Teaching of Reading” benefited all Kinder to Grade 2 teachers. Both training programs were held at the Ateneo Professional Schools in Rockwell Center, Makati City from October 28-30.

The Annual Reading Festival held on November 12 aimed to enhance the joy of reading among students. Teachers of the two Schools organized various interactive activities participated in by all Grade 2 pupils. Lastly, around 400 Grade 2 pupils of BESM and LES had fun exploring Museo Pambata’s (Children’s Museum) Mobile Library and its 300 children’s books during a visit to LES last November 28. The half-day program included storytelling and arts and crafts activities conducted by Museo Pambata staff.

PHILCAMCSAT and CMET Recertified by BMIBoth PHILCAMSAT and CMET have been granted re-certification by the Belgian Maritime Inspectorate (BMI) after an audit conducted on December 8 to 11 by Mr. Bart Heylbroeck, Naval Architect - Director at BMI, and Ms. Myriam Jacob, BMI Auditor, who visited CMET and PHILCAMSAT’s Makati and Maragondon offices for the annual

inspection. The audit confirmed the institutions’ commitment to the continuous development and improvement of their quality management systems, infrastructure and curriculum. BMI also recognized additional courses offered by PHILCAMSAT which include GOC for GMDSS, ECDIS Generic and Proficiency in Fast Rescue Boat. In particular, BMI noted the Center’s state-of-the-art facility with Mr. Heylbroeck stating that “BMI continues to have a high level of confidence in PHILCAMSAT.”

The BMI recognition is a seal of approval from a European flag state and is an assurance for CMET students and PHILCAMSAT trainees that their education and training are of the highest international standards giving them the competency to work globally.

PTC Christmas and Thanksgiving MassExpressing gratitude for yet another remarkable year, the PTC Group held its annual Christmas and Thanksgiving mass on December 21 at the Penthouse of First Maritime Place. Officiating the Eucharistic celebration was Rev. Fr. Tito Caluag who reminded everyone to reflect on God’s visitation through the small blessings in their everyday lives and more importantly, to show their gratitude for these blessings through the act of giving back to others.

Flying all the way from Spain to be part of this special occassion was Ambassador Carlos and Mrs. Isabelita Salinas. Addressing the employees after the mass, Ambassador Salinas expressed how much he has missed his PTC family and his pride in how the company has evolved over the years - -- from a small, 280 sqm. office to the industry leader that it is today. He conveyed his heartfelt thanks to all PTC Group employees whose hard work and dedication have contributed to the company’s growth and development. Mrs. Salinas, on the other hand, very endearingly reminded employees to feel the excitement of Christ being in their lives and to be joyful of His presence not only as manifested in the faces of their loved ones, but also through their neighbors, co-workers and people they meet everyday.

The Sisters of Mary Boystown Choir sang during the mass and afterwards serenaded employees with enchanting Christmas carols. Served to complete the yuletide ambience were traditional Filipino Christmas snacks bibingka, puto bumbong and hot chocolate.
