A 1960s office building has been transformed into a highsecurity building, organised like a Venetian merchanthouse, with goods loaded at the ground floor, stock andoffices above, and, at the highest level, a residence forthe owner with a roof terrace. The challenge was to makea building that respects its curtain wall typology, whilerelating to the historic houses on either side.

A new skin of glass and golden copper alloy coversthe facade, the roof and a small courtyard at the back.On the outside a patterned, perforated golden copperalloy curtain is hung, incorporating motorized foldingelements. Every morning half of the curtain opens, emulating the adjacent historic houses with repeatingwindow reveals in a ‘massive’ wall. After working hoursthe curtain closes automatically, creating a burglar-proof

vault. After dark, dim lighting reveals a modern glasshouse behind a veil of translucent brass.

    THE JUDGES’ VIEWS

”This transformable building is aunique and powerful response to itsurban context – surprising, yet obvious. Iteffortlessly overcomes the constraints of an

existing building frame without compromiseand reflects the rhythm of the streets. The

central concept is carried through undiluted

and executed with care to an impressivelevel of detail.

PUBLIC CHOICE WINNERHOUSE VDV, DESTELBERGEN, BELGIUMGRAUX & BAEYENS ARCHITECTEN

House VDV appears simultaneously familiar and strange. The basic volume, consisting of a ground floor and upperlevel within a pitched roof, alludes to familiar archetypessuch as the rural farmhouse or barn. Yet, at the sametime, the simplicity of the volume is broken up by largeglass facades, establishing relationships with thesurrounding trees and listed castle wall surrounding theplot.

Mandatory planning requirements for the plot madesure that the house was conceived as a pavilion. Thesolution is essentially a garden-house with no frontor rear but, instead, two identical facades and a360-degree experience of the entire plot. The untreatedcopper cladding will continuously change colour overthe years, from bright in the beginning to brown andeventually green at the end. It gives the project a poeticimpermanence, which is echoed in the reflection of thesurrounding trees in the glass facades.

    THE JUDGES’ VIEWS

”The abstract, diagrammatic rationalebehind this design is seductive anddelivered with conviction as a pavilion within

a walled garden. The conventional use ofcopper does not detract from its strong

form and subversion of the traditional gabled house.

COMMENDEDFERRY TERMINAL BUILDINGS, STOCKHOLM, SWEDENMARGE ARKITEKTER

The buildings serve travellers heading to the Stockholmarchipelago and are located in one of the city’s mostvisited areas opposite the Royal Palace. There are threenew buildings: two terminals and one building with acafé, viewing steps, storage and a recycling station. Thebuildings are scaled down in relation to the surroundingarchitecture, maintaining open views of the Royal Palace. The design is based on an elementary form – the cone– framing different views over the water. The conesare combined in different ways to meet the demands ofthe different operations, resulting in buildings with nospecific fronts or backs.

Each building is unique but together they create acohesive expression for visitors. Exterior facades arecovered with burnished brass alloy, accentuating thesculptural form of the buildings with a gradually evolvingsurface. Glazing by the waiting hall and the sales areasis drawn back to give rain shelter and to provide spacefor displays. Due to the construction of the buildings aprecise expression has been created where gutteringand drain pipes can be avoided.

    THE JUDGES’ VIEWS

”This powerful group of buildings alongStockholm’s waterfront is truly specialand defies the mundane ferry terminalbuilding typology. Deferential in scale to

their historic neighbours, the buildingsmake no architectural concessions and

instantly add to the city’s heritage.

At the front of the elongated structure is the mainentrance with a small forecourt. The three-storeybuilding has been lowered four metres below street levelin order to create a direct underground access to theadjacent school and to give the extensive hall with a totalheight of 11.8 metres an appropriate form in the locality.

The building’s appearance is characterised by a façademade of folded, perforated copper plates covering thehall like a semi-transparent veil. The copper sheetsare staggered by one folded element at each storey, which structures the front horizontally. The façade isinterrupted by glazing on the upper floor at the northeastside and on the ground floor at the southeast side. Theformer ensures an even and glare-free incidence ofdaylight in addition to the numerous skylights, whilethe latter provides a view into the sports hall from theschoolyard.

    THE JUDGES’ VIEWS

” A deceptively simple design cleverlyincorporating below-ground space, thissports hall box is beautifully done, eventhough defined by its programme and flat

site. Its detailed execution is exemplary, withuninterrupted glazing and a subtle use of

     perforated copper.

The Euravenir Tower project occupies the last free parcelof Phase One of the Euralille Area. The plot’s strategicposition, located at the intersection of different axes, demanded a sophisticated solution that acts as a hub, uniting the elements gravitating around it. By extendingand crossing the axes within the plot, an initial extrusiongenerated a small tower. With completion of the AvenueLe Corbusier, this vertical element also becomes acorner building on the Place Valladolid signalling the cityto approaching drivers.

This architecture has created a new urban space thatcombines private and public, vertical and horizontal. The facades become a series of windows that provide a360-degree panorama of the city. Here, a lattice motif isformed by cut-outs in the facades. The copper is usedas a kind of fixed edge along the opaque or semi-glazedstretches of the façade. It is also present in the form ofperforated panels that help regulate the amount of lightpenetrating the building.

    THE JUDGES’ VIEWS

”This free-standing, crystalline coppertower is handsome in its own right witha simplicity of form, considered use ofmaterials and crisp detailing. But it also

plays a key urban design role in a very

public situation, uniting and making sense ofits surroundings.

Clad in patinated brass, the monolithic building marries asimple plan form with irregular rooflines. The roof foldsalong east-west axes, creating a dialogue of slopes andfragmenting the volume, gashed with glazed openingsto capture the north light. These illuminate a centraldouble-height entrance hall space in such a way that itfeels neither interior nor exterior.

This focal point is a dramatic space, whose dark, irregular walls and lacerated roof symbolise war. Thehuge panels of patinated metal that form the hall’s wallsare the same as those used on the facades, giving apowerful identity, coherence and sculptural character.

    GREAT JAMES STREET, LONDON,UKEMRYS ARCHITECTS

A bronze triangulated roof form now sits over landlockedspace to the rear of two historic townhouses, creating adramatic transition from the old to the new, its height andform designed to fit key points around the perimeter. Thepatina of the bronze on this contemporary folded roof, aswell as courtyard facades and window surrounds, wasselected to harmonise with the existing buildings.

An asymmetric lofted ceiling sits under the new roof withrecessed lighting accentuating the geometric planes. Useof roof lights and glazed access to courtyard areas hasensured that the building is flooded with light.

The house stands on a steep slope, amongst trees, andseems to bite into the mountain: it is deep-rooted tothe north and “emancipated” to the south. The plan ofthe house is C-shaped, wrapping around a patio, andirregular, creating three forms with variable heightsincreasing from the north-east, where the volumedisappears into the ground.

The green meadows and trees frame the external skinmade of corrugated pre-oxidised copper and Accoyawood. The ventilated copper wall is modulated witha slight pleating, its non-reflective surface almostquivering in the light, while the timber of the great splayreflects southern light.
