Former Msunduzi Dep-uty Mayor Mervyn Dirks (pictured) has vowed to take tougher action against a local newspaper for publishing what he regards as incorrect information about him. Dirks utterances come in the wake of a report which claimed that he was on the verge of joining the Democratic Alliance (DA).

I am furious at what was

printed in that article. The Galaxy newspaper ran the article about me without even speaking to me, said Dirks, adding that he planned on lodging a complaint with the Press Ombudsman.

The former Deputy Mayor fur-ther indicated that he would con-sider other options in dealing with the newspaper. He has distanced himself from all allegations saying he was furious and there was no truth in the Galaxy article.

The article stated that the Gal-axy was the fi rst to break the news, headlining their newspa-per, Former ANC Deputy Mayor Dirks to join DA. The arti-cle stated that the news was no

longer kept under the belt. The report went on to say that

not all DA councillors were happy with Dirks moving to the DA and that many councillors blamed Mergen Chetty, who also moved from the ANC to the DA, for spearheading Dirks move.

The DA councillors are not all keen on accepting Dirks into the party given his link with the past council that ran the city close to bankruptcy. It is however alleged that one faction within the DA is keenthey believe it will b a scoop for the party to have a former ANC deputy within the DA, stated the article.

    The Galaxy article stated that

Chetty unpopular amongst his DA councillors but is seen as an opportunist who hogged the exec-utive seat that was benchmarked for Ward 33 councillor Nalini Atwaru.

I am furious at what was printed in that article. They (Gal-axy) ran the article about me with-out even speaking to me, said Dirks, adding that he planned on lodging a complaint with the Press Ombudsman.

Dirks emphasized that his loy-alties lay with the ANC, I am a loyal cadre of the ANC, he said.

    Mervyn Dirks denies defection claims

Motorists travelling along Bambatha Road (New Grey-town Road) where Prilla Mills is situated are up in arms over speed-ing fi nes they received since last year with some refusing to pay claiming there are no speed limit signs erected.

The municipality however has warned motorists to either pay up or answer in court.

Public Eye received several telephone calls, emails and let-ters from upset motorists claim-ing that they were not properly informed of the speed limit on the road leading to and from Alland-ale Drive.

A motorist who did not wish to be named and confi rmed to receiving a fi ne, told Public Eye that he was shocked to fi nd out from the a member of the Msun-duzi Traffi c Department that the fi nes issued were indeed illegal. I was told in the strictest confi dence

that the trap was indeed illegal and they only discovered it after a motorist pointed it out to them. By then the fi nes were already posted and to avoid any egg on their faces they have decided to remain silent and let us poor fools pay for an illegal speed trap, he said.

I have recently received two fi nes of R200 each in that area. According to the charge, I was driving 72 km/h in a 60km zone. There are no boards inform-ing motorists when they turn from Allandale Drive going towards Prilla Mills. Is this fair?

asked one complainant who wrote in to Public Eye.

Another motorist said that he refuses to pay his fi ne received outside Prilla Mills as he believes the fi nes were issued illegally.

However senior city offi cial Kwenza Khumalo said signs were put up but that they may have been defaced or knocked down. He said motorists should know the speed limit.

Those motorists must call us and tell us if there are no signs there. Come rain or shine, motor-

ists will do anything to avoid paying their fi nes. They always look for excuses, he said add-ing that motorists are still liable to

pay their fi nes or opt to appear in court.

Pay your fines or go to court, says Traffic Department

UMgungundlovu munici-pality has come in for a lashing from one of its local municipalitys, after it was reported that it failed to book ade-quate accommodation for athletes participating in the annual Salga games. This emerged in a report presented to the Msunduzi Munic-ipalitys Executive Committee meeting (Exco) last week.

The report fi ngered the district for exposing athletes to danger during the games which ran from the 7th to the 10th of December. Msunduzi athletes make up 85% of the district team. The report was compiled by the manager for spe-cial projects in the Mayors offi ce, Evodia Mahlangu.

Children were booked at Escourt in a boarding house that had a tavern at its entrance and there was no security for all those children, said Mahlangu. Because of shoddy accommoda-tions arrangements, the report con-tinued, the overall performance of the team declined. In the previ-

ous year the district came 3rd, but this time it came fourth she said.

District organiser, James Khan-yeza , refuted the contents of the report, vowing to take the author of the report to actual lodges where the athletes stayed during the games.

He said the report was further from the truth and that the accom-

modation was the best accommo-dation they could secure in a small town. This cannot be like eThek-wini as there are more sought after establishments, he said.

According to Khanyeza, the contingent for the games included about 400 athletes. He said the Escourt accommodation was also the closest to the nearest grounds. The sporting grounds were at Ladysmith. So, Estcourt was the nearest town for us to lodge, he

said. The report further insisted that

KwaNaloga Games should not be hosted by smaller districts who do not have the required resources to do so. Khanyeza though said it would not be fair to say that uThukela should not have a right to host the games as they also fall part of the province. Msunduzi hosted the sporting spectacle in 2010

He said that uMgungundlovu shared the base camp with uMkh-anyakude. The reason why we secured accommodation in Est-court was that we were among fi rst municipalities to book, he said. Khanyeza said that the poor weather conditions may have con-tributed to the districts poor per-formance. Regarding poor per-formance she might have been referring to soccer as it is quite popular. We are still investigating as to why this code is not doing well enough, he said.

A teaching career span-ning nearly 50 years came to an end as dedi-cated educator Deviki Govender of Springhaven Primary School in Bombay Heights spent her last days at school last week.

Govender, now aged 65, spent 45 years touching hundreds of lives, shaping and sharpening young minds across the prov-ince. She taught them how to read, how to write and how to be good human beings.

Govender, teaching Grade ones, twos and threes says she owes her lifes success to her par-ents who through their foresight and sacrifi ce sent her for further studies.

I will miss the staff, learn-ers, pupils and cleaners as they too have become a part of my life along with all the other schools I taught at. I am going to miss look-ing forward to public holidays and planning in advance what I am going to do, laughed Govender.

Her dedi-cation to the teaching pro-fession was best illustrated by the fact that while she had the option of retiring at 60, she opted instead to spend another fi ve years , imparting knowledge to learners.

I could have retired earlier but it was my wish to stay longer. I thank God for bless-ing me with good health so that I could have achieved this wish, Govender told Public Eye.

In the early days not all par-ents sent their daughters for fur-ther education, but although liv-ing in New Hanover, Govender was encouraged to matriculate at

Girls High School in Pieter-maritzburg and attend teacher training college in Springfi eld.

She began teaching at Tem-ple Road Primary School in Durban and spent

11 years in the school before she went on to spend 13 years at Thornville Primary School. By then, Govender married Denny Govender and moved to Pieter-maritzburg to teach at Suncrest Primary School where she is more prominently known for teaching.

Govender says that although she has only spent two years at

Springhaven Primary School, she will miss the school terribly.

I enjoy travelling and look forward to spend my retirement with my daughter and two sons, my four grandchildren and family members, she said.

Govender imparted with some of her wisdom to all educators still in the profession, I know that many of us experience stress, frus-tration and demotivation but be proud of your profession and hang in there.

Remember that you are edu-cating and infl uencing the lives of hundreds of learners who are our future generation.

An avid traveler, Govender is looking forward to sightseeing in Hong Kong, Bangkok and Malay-sia to look forward to next month with her husband, Denny.

Deserving pupils who have not had the opportunity to pur-sue further studies due to fi nan-

cial reasons have been thrown a lifeline by the Indian govern-ment who are offering 52 fully paid bursaries to study in India. Reaching out to 2012 matricu-lants, the Consulate General of India is now offering free schol-arships to South African learn-ers who are residents of Kwa Zulu Natal, Eastern Cape and the Free State. Once the students are identifi ed, they will jet off to study toward any career, except medicine, in India.

The fully paid scholarship includes airfares at the time of joining the university and then after completion of the course. The Director of the Indian Cul-ture Centre at the Consulate of India in Durban, Ms Lesley Jacob said that the scholarship programme is open to all stu-dents who have passed matric.

The standard of education in India is truly commendable and extraordinary. While there are many universities in South

Africa that do not have the space to accommodate students who want to study, the univer-sities in India have the facilities available to accommodate these students, said Jacob.

Chosen students can study toward an under graduate course, post graduate course and a doctorate.

I fully recommend that stu-dents take full advantage of this once in a lifetime opportunity, added Jacob.

The members of the Isa-bel Beardmore home in Woodlands were treated with a gift for their garden by the Australian South African Com-munity (ASAC). A group of Aus-tralians visited the Isabel Beard-more homes and erected a gazebo in their garden. The gazebo would provide a place for the residents of the home to relax, read, rest or sit with their visitors. The gazebo

was handed over to the commit-tee and residents and a celebration was had by the ASAC members, committee, residents and staff of the Isabel Beardmore home.

ASAC is an organisation made up of ex-South Africans now liv-ing in Australia who decided to give back to the communities they used to live in, especially catering for the previous generation who are now living in Old Age Homes.

The founders of this group Les and Jackie Isaacs, now living in Perth and a local South Afri-can couple, Clive and Ada Lawler have worked together in order to see this dream of assisting the eld-erly become a reality. A wish list of possible projects that can be undertaken by this group was pre-sented to the ASAC in order to assist the residents of the home.

    Mercedes-Benz AMG Day

    By James Siddall

AMercedes-Benz AMG - any AMG - is aproduct to be conjured with. And in case you didn't know, AMG was founded

back in 1967 by Hans Werner Aufrecht and ErhardMelcher in Grossaspach, Germany. The namecomes from the first letter of their respectivesurnames, and the first letter of AMG's birth-place.

Right now, the range comprises 22 vehicles, ranging from 310kW in output to a hammering463kW, and while us motoring journalists do oftenget to experience these machines, in the form of testcars or on launches held on public roads, weseldom get to tap into their power or potential.Motoring writers are accountable for their owntraffic fines, while common sense - and in my case

perhaps a bit more maturity than in previous years- dictates some restraint.

But on a racetrack it's a different matter. Whichis no doubt why Mercedes-Benz recently laid on across-section of AMG products, and then let anassortment of car journos loose on Kyalami Race-track - although we were, of course, accompaniedby instructors, who didn't so much nanny us ascorrect our driving.

Some of the cars on hand included a CLS 63AMG Shooting Brake, an SLK 55 AMG, an ML 63AMG, an SLS AMG and an SLS AMG Roadster(the SLS is the first vehicle developed inde-pendently by Mercedes-AMG), an SL 63 AMGand an SL 65 AMG, and a brace of C 63 AMGs.

First choice for a couple of hard laps was theSLK 55 AMG. Now I've had one on test before,

and on public roadscould barely draw onthe full 310kW from itsbarking V8.

But on the track itwas a different matter, and I was astounded athow lithe this littleroadster was, dancinginto corners and thenironing out thestraights.

Far more dramaticyet perhaps not quite asathletic was the SL 65AMG, with a scarcelybelievable 450kW and1000Nm of torque ontap, singing a primevalhammer-song from its

big, turbo-charged, six-litre V12.But the SL I tried ran hot and went into "limp"

mode, where power is severely curtailed to sparethe engine. Which wasn't terribly surprising con-sidering the mercury was hovering around the 36degree mark, and that the big Benz had beenhammered at the hands of other drivers.

The biggest surprise by far was the ML 63 AMG.Now this is essentially a large SUV - yet it corneredwith physics-defying deftness, and like all AMGproducts sounded simply superb, its great tur-bocharged 5.5-litre V8 pouring out 386kW.

It gets better.By the end of 2013 we can look forward to

seeing a total of 26 AMG models in the range, withpower outputs ranging from 260 kW to 552 kW.Some of these machines will include the upcoming

A 45 AMG, which will be the first time that AMGoffers a high-performance car in the compactclass.

Also expect a GL 63 AMG, while one of theMercedes highlights at the upcoming Johannes-burg International Motor Show will be the verylimited SL AMG Black Series. Closer to the end ofthis year we can expect to see the CLA AMG,too.

Of course, AMG hasn't been idle on the race-track. In the 2013 racing season it will be rep-resented in Formula 1 by the Mercedes AMGPetronas team. Not very surprisingly, the newsafety car will be the SLS AMG GT, while theFormula 1 medical car will be the C 63 AMGestate.

    Days of thunder indeed.

Unwanted spots, tattoos and fat that you would like to have removed? Well look no further as we here at Glamorous Aesthetic Skin Clinic now have a wide range of treatments right here at your fi ngertips with our range of the newest technology.

Sunlight, environmental factors and time all contribute to the development of dark spots, pigmentation and sun damage. Your face, hands and chest are the fi rst parts of the body to show signs of ageing because they receive so much sun exposure. Laser machines use wavelengths of heated light which are directly aimed at the spots of pig-mentation, targeting the pigmentation with-out damaging the surrounding tissue. Effec-tively, this helps to rejuvenate the skin, improving its texture, visibly minimizing pores and reducing superfi cial fi ne lines and wrinkles to reveal a more youthfully hydrated appearance.

How often can one have therapy for pigmentation?

Treatments can be performed as often as every two weeks as the interval between each treatment allows the skin to heal before the next treatment.

How many treatments will it take?

That will depend on the depth and amount of melanin in the pigment.

Does the treatment hurt? Each laser pulse causes heat when

it comes into contact with the pig-ment. This discomfort is more of a mild snapping sensation.

Will The Pigmentation Return After The Treatment?

With enough treatments the pigment can be completely removed and does not return.

Tattoos consist of thousands of particles of tattoo pigment suspended in the skin. Several colors of laser light are used for tat-too removal. Lasers emit a high powered beam of laser light in an extremely short pulse that is absorbed by the tattoo ink par-ticles breaking them down into smaller pieces enabling your natural immune defenses to absorb and disperse the ink. A gradual fading of the tattoo occurs over a series of treatments.

Introducing the latest technology to our slimming range are Lipo Laser Fat Removal, Ultrasonic Liposuction, Radio Frequency Energy And Vaccum Suction.

To further enhance the results of your weight loss programme, these above treat-ments can be combined giving you optimal

results. LIPO LASER is the use of 70 diode laser which is a high intensity light source that targets the fat cells causing them to explode and then be eliminated through the bodys lymphatic system. The ultra sonic liposuction effectively exhausts fatty cells causing them to shrink. Radio frequency energy promotes the dissolving of fat-ness through the bodys metabolism. Vac-uum suction improves the appearance of the orange peel effect. It slims and sculpts the body and tightens the skin. Treatment areas include abdomen, thighs, knees, buttocks, hips, back, arms, chin and neck, post baby and past operative fat. These treatments tar-gets full body shaping, eliminates cellulite, dissolves fat pockets and promotes weight loss. So stop wasting time and money on treatments that show no results and pay us a visit and we can work together in sculpting your image to your minds desires.

    Strange but true health tips

After analyzing 51 public restrooms, experts found that the stall closest to the restroom door consistently had the lowest bacte-ria levels (and the most toilet paper!). The fi rst stall probably sees less traffi c because its near the door and people want privacy. And when youre fi nished, stand before you fl ush. When toilets are fl ushed, a fi ne mist of water containing contagious bacteria sprays up. You can catch intestinal bugs and hepatitis from it.

People with positive ini-tialsones that spell out things like J.O.Y. or W.O.W.live nearly 4 1/2 years longer than people with neutral ini-tials. D.U.D.s and A.S.S.s live nearly 3 years less. Other initials that may shorten life: I.L.L. and D.E.D.

For some people it is expe-rienced as the uncom-fortable sensation of "pins and needles" or burning pain (especially at night) of their hands or feet. Others may suffer even more extreme symptoms such as muscle wasting, paralysis, or organ or gland dysfunction.

Symptoms of peripheral neu-ropathy may include:

Numbness or insensitivity to pain or temperature .. muscle weakness

A tingling, burning, or prick-ling sensation, muscle wasting, sharp, burning pain or cramps and even paralysis.

Even a light touch.resulting in a loss of balance and coordina-tion, feet and legs are likely to be affected before hands and arms as well as extreme sensitivity to

touch. These symptoms are often worse at night.

    What is Peripheral Neuropa-thy?

Peripheral neuropathy describes damage to the peripheral nervous system, which transmits informa-tion from the brain and spinal cord to every other part of the body.

In most cases, peripheral neu-ropathy is secondary to conditions including diabetes, lupus, rheuma-toid arthritis, scleroderma, alcohol-ism, nutritional defi ciencies, AIDS, or poisoning from heavy metals, chemotherapy, or various drugs.

Other causes include compres-sion or entrapment (carpal tunnel syndrome), direct physical injury to a nerve (trauma), penetrated injuries, fractures or dislocated bones, pressure involving superfi -cial nerves (ulna or radial) which

can result from prolonged use of crutches or staying in same posi-tion, tumor, intraneural hemor-rhage, exposure to cold, radiation or atherosclerosis.

It is a syndrome which includes symptoms of numbness, tin-gling, pricking sensations, sensi-tivity to touch, burning pain, and muscle weakness and atrophy of the arms and legs. Ayurveda is not only a medi-cal science but also a way of healthy living. Apart from prescribing treatment to vari-ous chronic and complex diseases, Ayurveda also emphasizes on an ideal method of healthy living. A special sec-tion of Ayurveda, swasthavritta deals with the science of health and the code for a healthy conduct. Swasthavritta which literally means the regime of abid-ing in ones own nature is an individuals guide to the path of healthy and long life.

Healthy living and ayurvedaAccording to Ayurveda, there is no mag-ical remedy or short cut for healthy liv-ing. Instead, strict and staunch regulation of the charyas, the principles of healthy lifestyle which include a proper routine regarding ahar, vihar and achars based on hetu (Material cause), kala (Season) and desha (Habitat) are the only ways for healthy living. Ayurveda defi nes the healthy state as: A person, whose somatic and psychic humors are in equilibrium, digestion is uniformly healthy, with nor-mal functioning of the fundamental tissues of the body and body wastes, accompa-

nied by the processes of the soul, cogni-tive organs and the mind, is said to be a healthy person. The principles of maintaining a proper well being of the body and mind are two-fold, fi rst the consumption of diet and sec-ond, the observance of personal, moral, seasonal and spiritual conduct. Swastha-vritta mainly emphasizes on following a proper routine regime as well as seasonal regime. Other than these two, Swastha-vritta also prescribes Sadvritta, the right ways of living i.e. following good mental, social, religious, personal and moral con-duct. Thus, we can sum up Swasthavritta as an ideal lifestyle for a human being. It is actually the crux of Ayurvedic living.

RitucharyaAyurveda is comprised of two words. Ayur

means Life, and Veda means Knowl-edge. Thus, Ayurveda deals with how to live a healthy, balanced life. Ayurveda focuses on living in tune with nature. It recognizes the intimate relationship between the individual and the environment.

Ayurvedic DietAyurveda is a very vast and ancient med-ical science. Unlike other medical sci-ences, instead of focusing on treatment of any particular disease, Ayurveda focuses more on the healthy living and well being. For healthy living, Ayurveda emphasizes on consuming right kind of diet which is healthy and nutritious. In Ayurveda, food (Ahar), sleep (nidra) and brahmacharya (controlled sex) are regarded as the three pillars or tripods of healthy living. It is important for our body to be adjusted to timely intake of good quality and proper food, regular sleep-ing habits and controlled indulgence in sex because as all this ensures long and healthy life. Compiled by Dr Diksha Premrajh (BAMS), 033-3913867

When Ronnie Gabriel passed away, it was a very sad day for dancing. Arguably the bestBall-room and Latin American dancer of his time, he made an outstand-ingcontribution to this beautiful form of art.

Gabriel was a professional dancer par excellence, and together with Daphne Josiah won every major championship from 1965-1975. They remained undefeated and their greatest achievement was winning the coveted double, i.e. Ballroom and Latin American. A Legend in the true sense of the word!
