From the Pastor When you are done with what you were commanded to do say … “We are unprofitable servants; we have done what we were obliged to do” First things first: Father James Murphy has peacefully passed unto the Lord’s dwelling this past Tuesday. The Archdiocese posted to us that Reverend James P. Murphy, 80, ordination class of 1965, passed away on October 1, 2019. Father Murphy served in many Parishes before retiring. I have visited Father Jim once and it was quality time well spent. Since my arrival, I have heard a lot of great things about him. Many of you have seen and remember Fr. Jim’s service and ministry here at St. Colette. It is a remarkable work he has done his entire life with the love of Christ and God’s people. How fortunate that we have been served and touched by his life and preaching. He now rests in God’s lov-ing arms. Upon receiving this sad news, we celebrated the 8:00 a.m. mass in his memory. Please remember him in your prayers. All funeral services took place at St. Catherine Labouré Church, 3535 Thornwood Avenue, Glenview, IL Saturday, October 5, 2019. May he rest in Peace! This Monday; tomorrow, we are invited to spend some time in front of the Blessed Sacrament – the Eucha-rist. It will be the whole day in our Church with the Monstrance blessed by St. John Paul II, that is visiting parishes in our Vicariate. It is a special moment to spend time with our Lord. Eucharist is the center of our worship and the core to our belief in the real presence of Christ. In him; the wounded healer we find strength, courage, inspiration, solace and fullness of God’s Love. We unite our own experiences with Christ and ask him to take charge when our own limitations kick in. He has told us – he is the way, the truth and the life. Take some time tomorrow and spend a more solemn, grace filled moment with him. Confide to him and allow his Father, our heavenly Father to respond to you in the best way he knows how; accordingly. Our Lord is the mentor to our selfless giving. His public ministry has testified that in many ways and He teaches us today to do all for goodness sake and to never worry about seeking credit or appraisal. To do eve-rything with selfless love. I see a lot happening at St. Colette that express this. Tireless efforts and concrete ways to act as Christ would. To that point, I want to thank Mary & Frank Tornabene, Jose Osuna, Allyssa for their incredible leadership with PADS and making sure the volunteers operate smoothly, that our guests get warm meals etc. A more detailed account on St. Colette’s PADS this summer will be coming out in the following weeks. I feel incredibly indebted to say the same to sooooo many of you who volunteered with PADS, your selfless love is real and unpretentious. You melt hearts with your hard work, enthusiasm, sacri-fice and ever giving spirit. I am so blessed to be part of you St. Colette. When it is all over let's say, “We are unprofitable servants; we have done what we were obliged to do”

Del Párroco Cuando hayan terminado con lo que se les ha ordenó digan ... “Siervos inútiles somos; hemos hecho sólo lo que debíamos haber hecho.” Lo primero es lo primero: El Padre James Murphy ha sido llevado a la casa de Señor el martes pasad en paz. La Arquidiócesis nos publicó que el Reverendo James P. Murphy, de 80 años, clase de ordenación de 1965, falleció el 1 de octubre de 2019. El Padre Murphy sirvió en muchas parroquias antes de retirarse. Visité al Padre Jim una vez y fue un tiempo de calidad bien aprovechado. Desde mi llegada, he escuchado muchas cosas buenas sobre él. Muchos de ustedes han visto y recuerdan el servicio y el ministerio del Padre Jim aquí en St. Colette. Es una obra notable que ha hecho toda su vida con el amor de Cristo y el pueblo de Dios. Qué afortunados de haber sido servidos y tocados por su vida y predicación. Ahora descansa en los brazos amorosos de Dios. Unimos nuestras propias experiencias con Cristo y le pedimos que se haga cargo cuando nuestras limitaciones entren en juego. Él nos ha dicho: él es el camino, la verdad y la vida. Tómese un tiempo mañana y pase un momento más solemne y lleno de gracia con él. Confíe en él y permita que su Padre, nuestro Padre celestial, le responda de la mejor manera que sepa; como corresponde. Nuestro Señor es el mentor de nuestras donaciones desinteresadas. Con eso en mente, quiero agradecer a Mary y Frank Tornabene, José Osuna, y Allyssa por su increíble liderazgo con PADS y asegurarme de que los voluntarios funcionen sin problemas, que nuestros invitados reciban comidas calientes, etc. Una cuenta más detallada sobre St. Colette's PADS este verano saldrá en las próximas semanas. Me siento increíblemente en deuda de decir lo mismo a tantos de ustedes que se ofrecieron como voluntarios con PADS, su amor desinteresado es real y sin pretensiones. October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Types of Violence Physical abuse is what comes to mind on hearing the words “Domestic Violence “. Often other types of abuse occur long before it becomes physi-cal. These include verbal, emotional, and financial abuse, which can be equally if not more devastat-ing as the damage is not readily observed. This article will review these types of abuse. Physical and sexual abuse will be discussed next time. Verbal and emotional abuse may begin subtlety, with the abuser demeaning, criticizing, or ridicul-ing things that the victim values. This may include family, friends, religion, education, job, or heritage. The victim may be insulted, humiliated or ignored, either publicly or privately. The abuser may try to pass this off as teasing or as a joke. This behavior is hurtful and not funny. It is a form of manipulation Financial abuse occurs when money or access to it is withheld, with the victim having to ask for eve-ry little bit. She may not be “allowed” to have a job, or may be forced to turn over her income to her husband. In other instances, the abuser may be himself financially irresponsible, driving up mutu-al debt and ruining her credit. These are some of the ways the abuser feels pow-erful and has control over the victim. She may feel a loss of self-worth, a sense of fear, guilt or shame. He may try to isolate her from family, friends, or community. She may become de-pressed and withdrawn from others on her own. If these behaviors are observed frequently, or this type of abuse is suspected, it is critical not to mini-mize them. There is hope and help available. Hot lines, like the National Domestic Violence Hotline 800-799-7233, and WINGS 847-221-5680, are always open. There is support and counseling available for victims. It is important that they know they are not alone.

All Souls Day We will celebrate a special mass on All Souls Day for members of our parish who have died since last November 2nd. If you had a funer-al service other than a mass here at St. Colette and would like to join in celebrating your loved one on November 2nd, please contact Marge Loesch (847) 259-2048 by October 20th.

Beginning this weekend, our parish will be participat-ing in The Baby Bottle Project benefiting The Wom-en’s Centers of Greater Chicagoland. This non-profit organization directly assists mothers and families expe-riencing crisis pregnancies by offering emotional, fi-nancial, material, and spiritual support through coun-seling, clothing & monetary provisions, prayer, and other aid. Each year the three locations together have over 5,000 appointments with expecting mothers. By God’s Grace, The Women’s Centers have saved almost 40,000 babies—and their mothers—from abortion since opening in 1984. Please take a Baby Bottle home with you from the church, fill it with your spare change, and return it the weekend of October 27. This is a simple, but crucial fundraising effort for The Women’s Centers. Please note the Baby Bottles cost almost $1.00 per bottle and are recycled afterwards so please return upon completion of the project. Thank you for helping defend life, and remem-ber to keep all pro-life undertakings in your prayers. Also if you are making a donation by check, please make it payable to: The Women’s Center. This past weekend was the last Saturday night of St. Colette PADS for this year. My heart is filled with love when I think of all that has been given so freely to this ministry. The compassion our parish community has shown to the people we have served is inspirational. Your willingness to use your gifts and abilities has strengthened the ministry and you have been beautiful examples of servant-leadership and giving. To experience homelessness is stress beyond what most of us can comprehend. What it is like to be ignored, to be excluded from society, it is unjust but the words and actions of our parish has helped to give hope and restore dignity. The St. Colette’s PADS ministry continues to pledge their best ef-forts in this service to our church and community, to welcome and train all volunteers, and to be church. In the coming weeks you will be provided with a comprehensive report of this year’s activi-ties, upcoming training opportunities and plans for next year. Please accept our warmest heartfelt thanks.
