Tips for Buying a Second Hand Bike
Ride the bike
Test riding in a variety of gears. Also try riding the
bike uphill in a big gear with lots of pressure. Listen
for signs of creaking and clicking – which could be
any number of things. Offer to leave a deposit,
equal to half the price of the bike.
Ride with hands off handlebars
Ride without hands off handlebars, if you cannot
maintain the bike in a straight line, this is a signal
that something is wrong with the frame and not
worth buying.
Check wheel alignment
With the bike held vertical. Look along the wheels
from front to back. If they are out of alignment this
is a bad sign.
Check wheels against fork
Spin the front wheel and see whether there is any
irregularity in the direction of the spinning wheel.
Check bearing of Wheels
A wheel should freely spin, and come to a natural
rest. Sudden stopping is a sign that the wheel’s
bearings have gone.
Examine brake rims for sign of damage
This can occur if the brake blocks have been
misaligned.
Check headset
Hold the front brake locked on, then move the
bike to and fro. If there is rocking and a clicking
sign, the headset needs tightening. If it still makes
the noise after tightening, it indicates a serious
problem.
Check frame for signs of damage and cracks
In particular look for damage underneath the
junction of the head and down tube. Look for sign
of crash damage, which could have weakened the
frame.
Check bottom bracket
Check bottom bracket for play by pulling and
pushing the end of the crank. There should be no
movement at all.
Ask history of the bike
Ask the seller where they bought bike, how they
used it and why they are selling.
Take a friend for second opinion
If possible, take along a friend for a second
opinion, especially if you don’t know much about
bikes.
Don’t be pressured into buying
If you’re not certain, don’t buy the bike.

Biking to Work
M ore than six million employees
currently use cars or buses to travel
less than five miles to work.
Switching to cycling would lead to
considerable health and carbon-saving benefits.
Current Projects Getting Staff Back
to Biking
T he NHS South West Regional Health
project involves partnerships with three
hospitals in Bournemouth, Plymouth and
Yeovil, focusing on staff and visitors
travelling to, from, and between buildings. Some of
the measures introduced will include bike storage
facilities, bike loans, parking permit redemptions,
cycle route upgrades and bicycle user groups.
The NHS North East Regional Health project joins
four hospitals in four trusts covering some 40% of
the NHS staff in the North East region. Initiatives to
encourage staff and visitors to cycle will include
innovative provision of secure cycle parking, cycle
training and the introduction of the salary sacrifice
scheme to encourage staff and site users to cycle.
The NHS South East Regional Health project is
different to the North East and South West projects
in that this scheme targets health professionals and
the public. A Bike-to-Work programme has been
established that is broken down into three core
components: enablers, which includes training and
maintenance activities; Cycle Challenge, a two week
competition to encourage people to engage with
the programme; and interventions, which includes
targeted activities such as ride leader training and
led rides.
The U-Cycle Nottingham project builds on the
Cycling and Health Innovation Project work that is
already underway in Nottingham. The City Council
and Sustrans (the sustainable transport charity)
will work with the Greater Nottingham Transport
Partnership, University of Nottingham,
Nottingham Trent University and Nottingham
University Hospitals NHS Trust on a range of
workplace initiatives. These include small and
large scale infrastructure improvements on and
between campuses, a cycle loan scheme for staff
and students, as well as activities such as training
and maintenance sessions, buddy bike schemes,
bike breakfasts and led rides.
Leisure
P ositive leisure experiences can lead to
new hobbies and habits, cycling is no
exception! The journey to work may be
too much for some, but family holidays
or a day out may provide the right incentive and
environment to encourage people to cycle.

The Finding New Solutions leisure projects explore
the proposition that people who have enjoyed a
leisure cycling experience are more likely to take up
cycling for everyday journeys.
Partners in the leisure programme include a county
council, a national park authority and a
collaboration between a government department,
charity and commercial holiday operator –bringing
a wide range of experience and approaches to the
overall programme.
Each of the project partners is either enhancing
existing, or providing new leisure cycling facilities to
enable non- and infrequent cyclists, or people that
currently only cycle for leisure, to enjoy cycling in
an attractive recreational setting.
Current Biking Leisure Projects
T he Peak District National Park Authority
plans to promote cycling as part of its drive
to encourage more sustainable travel by
visitors and residents within the park. This
will involve extending the network of off-road,
leisure cycling routes linking Buxton town and
station to Bakewell via the Monsal Trail, and to the
High Peak Trails. The Pedal Peak District project will
also improve existing cycle hire facilities and market
a package of leisure cycling activities and initiatives.
Devon County Council will focus on five Cycle Hub
Towns: Exeter, Exmouth, Newton Abbot, Tavistock
& Barnstaple with the aim of encouraging both
visitors and locals to try leisure cycling, and then
continue to cycle in more everyday situations.
There will be a focus on ensuring leisure cycling
opportunities are an easy and affordable option -
improving and promoting the facilities available.
The initiative will be launched with a series of
Cycling Fun Days – one per town during the Spring.
The Forestry Commission England, in partnership
with Hoseasons Holidays and the CTC Charitable
Trust, will employ seasonal officers to run cycling
activities including led rides, cycling competitions
and training at five flagship holiday sites and nearby
forest sites near Newton Abbot (SW), Ringwood
(South), Sherwood (Midlands), Kielder Water (NE),
York (North).

MOUNTAIN BIKES
W hile mountain bikes are fine for general
riding in the city, bear in mind that the wide
knobbly tires are better suited for off-road riding
and you may not go as fast as you would on a
hybrid or road bike. Prices range from £160 to £600
for a general purpose bike, but be aware that
cheaper models can be very heavy, as with road
bikes, you can always spend more to get something
lighter and more advanced.
Buy a mountain bike if you:
≡ Want an all-round machine that can be used
on and off-road
≡ Want something a bit more robust for
everyday cycling
ROAD BIKES
T he large, fast-rolling wheels, narrow, slick tyres
and more aerodynamic body position make
road bikes a good choice for people who do lots of
road miles. For a quality road bike, prices start
around £600 and can increase to thousands of
pounds.
Buy a road bike if you:
≡ Are looking for a fast commute
≡ Want a light weight bike
≡ Want to start going on longer weekend rides,
tours
HYBRIDS
T hey cover a wide range of styles – from road
bike-style frames with gearing and braking
systems of mountain bikes to urban mountain bike
styles with thinner tyres. Hybrids will usually have
flat handlebars. Faster, fitness hybrids have no
suspension, but many do and can be ideal for
mixing commuting with light off-road cycling.
Buy a hybrid bike if you:
≡ Want an all rounder bike, that's suitable for
mixed riding – both urban and leisure cycling
≡ Want an easy to use commuter bike
FOLDING BIKES
F olding bikes are great commuting bikes and
are nearly thief-proof as you can bring them
inside! They are also very handy if you don't want
to cycle the whole distance from home to work as
they can be folded up and taken on public
transport. Folding bike prices vary from £400 to
£1,200.
OTHER BIKE TYPES AND STYLES
T here are other bike styles available; BMXs, full
suspension trail bikes and jump bikes to name
a few. Fixed gear bikes or 'fixies' are becoming
more popular for commuting. They have a single
fixed gear and are cheap and easy to maintain.
Not best as a first bike but they can be great fun,
if tricky on the hills.
What will you use your bike for? Racing? City? Hills?
Parks?

CYCLE LANES
I f the cycle lanes appear safe then you should
use them however, you can ride on the road if
necessary. The Highway Code allows you as much
space as a car, so use it if you need to.
LOOK AHEAD
A lways look at what's coming up and a little bit
further down the road. Expect the
unexpected as other road users might not always
see you. Give parked cars extra berth in case
someone chooses to open a door in front of you.
Try to make eye contact with other road users, it's
a sure fire way to know that they've seen you.
BE AWARE OF WHAT'S BEHIND AND AROUND YOU
A lways be aware of traffic around you,
particularly when changing your road
position or near junctions. A quick, regular glance
over your shoulder helps you know if there's
someone behind you and if you need to take
caution. If you can't eyeball a driver coming out of
a junction, always be cautious and prepared.
LISTEN UP!
Y our hearing is as important as your sight on a
bike. You can often hear a car before you can
see it, as well as horns, sirens or people. So never
ride with headphones in, no matter how much
you like music.
JUNCTIONS AND ROUNDABOUTS
W hilst they can often seem daunting, there's
nothing to be scared of when using
junctions and roundabouts. Follow these simple
points:
1. Check your surroundings, and where other
cars are and where they are going.
2. Indicate, clearly show other road users
where you are going, just as you would in a
car.
3. Give yourself space on the road, use
whatever space you need to ensure you
aren't bullied out of the way by cars or
trucks. Try to get in front of or behind
vehicles rather than alongside them. Their
blind spots mean they might not be able to
see you riding alongside them which is
particularly dangerous when they turn left.
4.
5. Try to look other road users in the eye, if
they are looking back then you know that
they are aware of you.
6. Make your manoeuvre with confidence. Ride
on…
RIDING ON PAVEMENTS
Y ou should not cycle on pavements unless they
are signposted as cycle paths.
DON'T JUMP THE LIGHTS
T empting as it may be, never jump lights You
never know what's coming.
Go sky ride
