Silver Heights Second-ary School warmly wel-comed its new principal this week. Hailing from Kha-rina Secondary School where he served as deputy principal for 15 years, Dina Moodley (pictured) said the opportunity to serve as principal of Silver Heights was a challenge he accepted eagerly.
Good human relations, honesty, the ability to work with all role players, good negotiation skills and being in touch with learners needs are the qualities of any good principal, said Moodley.
Embracing these qualities would lead to successes such as a 100% matric pass rate which I hope to achieve with the school, said Moodley, adding that he also hopes to improve the internal results and create a safe environ-ment for learners.
This year I wish to focus on good per-formance from Sil-ver Heights Secondary School. I strongly believe that good resources, a safe environment and excellent
infrastructure all help to produce excellent results so those are my main priorities for my fi rst year as principal, said Moodley.
Moodleys message to his new staff and learners: Let us work together and aim for the best!
Day one of the school year got off to a bad start for Eastwood Sec-ondary School as learners had to be sent back home because of problems with the water supply at the school.
It emerged that the replacement of old pipes by the Department of Public Works, which started in
December last year, went on longer than expected. We def-initely have no water at the school, a staff member confi rmed yesterday.
Ward councillor Eunice Majola expressed disappointment over the problems. She told Public Eye that she learnt about the water supply problem on Tuesday. I approached the municipality about this and there is an understand-ing that they will send water tank-ers as an interim measure, said Majola.
She said they were hoping that
the repair work will be concluded by the end of the week.
Meanwhile, other schools struggled with a different kind of problem as a number of parents were seen lining up in a desperate effort to get places for their chil-dren.
A teacher at Woodlands Sec-ondary School, who spoke to the Public Eye on condition of ano-nymity, said the school currently has 65 names on its waiting list.
Phume Dubazana of Imbali said she hoped that her son would eventually get a place at the school as she was later told to buy a school tie. Ive been stressing for months as I had applied to this school in July last year, she said.
Joining Dubazana was Shew-bashnie Ramborosh of Northdale who was also pinning her hopes on the fact that some of the teach-ers told her to come back. My son attended W A Lewitt. Im hop-
ing that he will be given a chance to attend this school. We have no other alternative but to send him to Woodlands, she said.
The school principal was unavailable for comment as she was reportedly locked in meetings with departmental offi cials.
Despite the storm damage infl icted on some schools during the school holidays, most other school principals in the Northern areas were ready to set the 2013 school year rolling.
Schools such as Northlands Primary, Regina Primary, Green-hill and Eastwood Primary, which experienced minor setbacks after the recent storm which swept through the city, said earlier this week they were ready for the fi rst day of term.
Northlands Primary School principal V Naidoo said that even though the heavy rain and fast winds managed to uproot trees
and fl ood the staff quarters, they were ready for the new term.
Regina Primary School princi-pal Mrs Chetty said that despite some leaks and gutters that were broken during the storms, the school was ready.
Eastwood Primary Schools
principal, Miss Feta, said the school cleaners worked hard to clear up the debris left behind by the storms. There was lots of debris left behind that needed clearing up but other than that, it is all systems go, said Feta.

A new routinePublic Eye follows a Grade one

The back-to-school rou-tine kicked in this week across the province. It was a day marked by many fi rsts: fi rst day in Grade 1, fi rst day in high school and, for 2013 matricu-lants, the last fi rst day at school.
Public Eye reporter Kailene Pillay was given the task of docu-menting the fi rst of many routine
mornings for Ria Leigh Maha-raj who embarked on her fi rst day in Grade 1 at Greenhill Primary School.
At 6.15 am, Ria is woken by her mum, Rekha, who tells her its back to school. In return, her mum gets a sleepy Oh, Gosh.
Its all systems go. Not a tear in sight, confi dent Ria begins her work.
Rias mum brushes her hair into two pigtails. It is a style Ria com-plaines about, saying that none of her friends tie their hair that way.
Putting on her school jersey for the fi rst time. She wears her new school uniform proudly as she follows the footsteps of her mum, dad and big brothers who all attended Greenhill Primary School.
Ria goes through her bag full of new stationery. Excitement fi lters through her as she points out each new item.
Mum rushes her to fi nish her cereal, explaining to her why a good breakfast is important.
Bags packed, tummy full and neatly dressed, Ria jumps excit-edly into her mums car.
The fi rst steps to independence. Ria makes her way through the school corridors leaving her mum behind.
Parents Naveen and Rekha say their goodbyes to their big girl. I still remember the day she was born, reminisces her dad.

A group of suspected ATM bombers made a brief appearance in the Howick Magistrates Court this week after been arrested in Matu-batuba on the North Coast over the weekend. Police have dis-
missed reports of their arrests being made in Soweto and say they are unable at this stage to link the suspects to last years mur-der of Dog Unit constable Vidhur Jadoo.
The 10 suspects were travelling
in a minibus taxi at the time of their arrests. Firearms and explo-sives were found in the Josini house they stayed in the previous night.
The men were remanded in cus-tody, facing charges of attempted murder, theft of money belonging to FNB and malicious damage to property relating to the damage to ATMs. The bombings took place in the midlands region, Notting-ham Road and Howick. Jeevan confi rmed that all the arrested men were from KwaZulu-Natal. The suspects will appear in court again on Tuesday.
Police Spokesperson Joey Jee-van said that the suspects have not at this stage been linked to the murder of K9 constable Jadoo and attempted murder of his part-ner Warrant Offi cer Livingstone Mpangase.
Jadoo and his partner, Mpan-gase were ambushed and shot in Howick during what police sus-pected was an attempted ATM bombing last year.

Reach out takes to the streets
The Reach Out team took to the streets of Pieter-maritzburg on Christ-mas Eve, handing out teddy bears. The team stopped for a bite to eat when they met some paramedics on duty.
We gave them teddies as well because we know that they will also come into contact with kids who might be in situations where they may just need a warm soft cuddly toy to make them feel a lit-tle safer, said Melanie du Ples-sis, SEO of Reach Out (pictured above).
Reach Out is an organisation that aims to help the children, the
elderly and the infi rm. And those who are unable to help them-selves. They are based in Pieter-maritzburg and deal mainly with the informal settlement, France. The area has high levels of pov-erty and unemployment. Many of the children there are orphans and most of them are forced to fend for themselves. Reach Out is com-mitted to serving the children, the elderly and the infi rm.
They are supported by Add Hope (local KFCs) and Save Cash and Carry, BSI Steel and many more local businessess to make a difference in the lives of poverty stricken families.
