With fee reporting changes coming soon, now is the perfect time for a second opinion.

Like many Canadian investors, you may be concerned about the cost of the advice you are receiving from your financial advisor. By mid- 2017, investors in Canada will receive two new reports with details on the cost and performance of their investment account(s). This is excellent news for investors as these new reports will result in more information and enhanced transparency,

Here at RBC Dominion Securities, we support additional transparency about fees and performance or any reporting framework that allows our clients to have a clear understanding of how we are helping them achieve their financial goals. Thanks to the vast resources our clients have access to—such as award-winning research, cutting-edge trading technology, and wealth management specialists in estate planning, Wills, financial plans, business owner planning and more—we are confident in the value they receive for the fees they pay.

Has your current financial advisor been abundantly clear with you about fees? If so, do you feel you are receiving true value for these fees? If not, I’d be happy to offer a complimentary review of your financial affairs. Our fee-based discretionary investment and planning strategies are suitable for portfolios of $1 million or more.

Even if you are satisfied with your advisor, a second opinion can highlight new opportunities and tax-efficient solutions. With a second opinion, you’ve got nothing to lose – and everything to gain.

To help achieve your retirement goals, minimize taxes or boost your investment cash flow, act now to arrange your

complimentary personalized financial snapshot.

Please contact us at (403) 299-6564 or email [email protected] for more information.

Jeff Bergen is a Portfolio Manager with RBC Dominion Securities Inc. Member-Canadian Investor Protection Fund.

How much are you paying for financial advice?

RBC Dominion Securities Inc.

To get the value you deserve for your fees, you need to ask the big questions.

• Do I know exactly what I pay for investment guidance?

• Am I getting good value?

• Do I have access to estate and tax planning experts?

If you answered “no” even once, contact me for a complimentary second opinion on your portfolio – and put my 24 years of experience to work for you.

3) Look out for one another – Creating a safer community requires doing 1) and 2) on the list. When you’re connected to your neighbours a sense of safety can be achieved. The more often you’re outside, you can readily identify any unsafe aspects in your community.

4) Purchase a membership – Obtaining or renewing an annual membership to your community association can offer social, recreational opportunities and community life.

Board Message

Welcome 2017!

Happy New year! a better neighbourhood starts with you - start 2017 by being a good neighbour!

Here are 4 initiatives you can do to improve your neighbourhood:

1) Don’t be a stranger - Make it an objective to say “hello” to at least three neighbours that you don’t know by name. Who knows maybe you’ll make new friends!

2) experience the great outdoors – Plenty of neighbourhoods across our city have access to parks and pathways. Make it a point to be outside more often. Not only is getting outside good for your mental and physical health but it can build a greater appreciation for your neighbourhood.

wiNter can be a challenging time for people to get around their neighbourhood. A person with reduced mobility, a parent with a stroller or even just someone carrying bags from their car to their door can easily slip on ice and snow on sidewalks and pathways. Consider helping your neighbours and community by being a Snow Angel and keeping walkways clear of snow and ice!

The Snow Angels campaign encourages Calgarians to look out for those who may need assistance with snow removal. Now in its 13 year, it’s one way that community members can come together and help each other out.

if you, or someone you know has been helped by a Snow Angel, call 311 or go on line to recognize them and nominate them prizes. For more information visit calgary.ca/SnowAngels.

After four months living the school within a school dream, the students and staff from Dr. Roberta Bondar School will be moving into their new school on January 3, 2017. We had a wonderful partnership, helped each other, celebrated together and learned from one another. We wish them all the best.

On the fundraising front we had a busy time in November. Thanks to the efforts of Joanne C. our school community purchased $50 000 worth of chocolates. All of the profits will be ploughed back into opportunities for our students. As part of celebrating Movember we raised $400.00 for Kids Cancer Care.

Celebrations in December included gingerbread night and carolling.

We wish all of our friends in Discovery Woods a happy 2017.

reCeNt Bear aCtivity:Please be aware that there have been recent sightings of bears in the Springbank area, including a grizzly bear and two cubs. Bears are opportunists and are focused on obtaining as many calories as possible as they move closer to denning. This can include human foods as well as natural foods. in order to reduce the chances of a negative bear encounter, place attractants such as garbage, pet food and livestock feed in secure, bear resistant containers or inside a locked shed/garage etc.Carry bear spray – it is an effective tool for close distance encounters with bears and other wildlife. tHaNK youA big thank you to all our wonderful neighbours here in Discovery Ridge that supported our ‘Santa at Javinos’ event. Despite the bitterly cold weather, Santa was in full spirits and enjoyed talking with all the lovely children who came

and supported the ‘Toy Mountain’ event. With that said, it is from my heart (and Santa’s too no doubt) that i send out a huge thank you to those who kindly donated to this wonderful cause.

i would also like to take this opportunity to thank Julie Penner, David Tupper and Tyler Houston for volunteering their time and for making this event truly magical.

AND YOuR PeT

As a pet parent, you’re most likely concerned about your animal’s well-being. From slush and snow, to ice and

frigid temperatures, harsh Canadian winters bring new challenges, especially for pets that are used to spending time outdoors. Pet parents must be responsible for continuing to provide an active lifestyle for their animals while protecting them from harm’s way.

some things to consider during the winter season to ensure your pet’s wellness:

1. Fur alone cannot keep your pet warm. Animals suffer from weather extremes the same as humans. especially during

blizzards and storms, keeping your pet inside a warm, dry home is the best solution.

2. Provide your pet with a year-round diet that will improve their wellness. Nutram recipes offer a holistic and nutrition-first approach to assisting with digestion, immunity boost, weight control, mobility, and other special wellness needs for your pet at any life stage.

3. Don’t stop exercising with your pet in the winter. instead, take short, frequent walks in the daylight instead of extended excursions.

4. Do not leave your pet alone in the car. Just as a car acts as a microwave in the heat, it acts as a refrigerator in the winter, which could cause harm and even lead to death.

5. Outdoors, pets face dangers from road salts, chemicals, antifreeze, and poisons. Be sure to wash your pet’s paws with a warm cloth after being outside. Keep all toxic containers locked up and clean spills immediately.

6. Outdoor cats will naturally seek warmth, and most often this means near the warm engine of a car. Be sure to double check under the car before starting your engine.

7. indoor cats are not immune to winter safety hazards either. Avoid burns or the risk of electrocution by keeping animals away from heaters, vents, and other electrical appliances.

SleddiNg SafetyAlberta Health Services eMS would like to remind parents and children of some basic sledding safety tips as the winter season continues. Sledding injuries can result from collisions with stationary objects, such as trees and rocks, or with other people on the hill. unprotected falls can result in injury if you lose control at high speeds. everyone is at risk – especially children. Have a fun and safe trip on the toboggan hill by following these simple reminders:

Equipment• Always ensure your toboggan or sledding device is in good

repair. inspect it for any damage, or missing parts before each use;

• Be certain the operator is fully capable of staying in control of the sled at all times;

• Children should wear a properly fitted helmet designed for other high impact sports such as hockey, cycling, or climbing.

Hazards• Avoid hills that are too steep, or too icy – you can lose

control very quickly; • Choose hills free of all obstacles such as trees, rocks, utility

poles, or fences; • Beware of loose clothing (i.e. scarves), or clothing

containing drawstrings which can present a choking hazard if they become caught or snagged.

Plan ahead • Dress warmly in layers and anticipate weather changes; • Consider bringing extra sets of gloves and toques to

exchange wet garments for dry ones; • Take breaks to warm up out of the cold; • Attempt to cover exposed skin from the elements; • even when properly protected from the elements, the

finger tips, toes, ears, the tip of the nose, and other high points on the face such as the forehead and cheeks may be affected by the cold;

• if a cold-related emergency has occurred, treat it by first removing the individual from of the environment;

• gently warm the affected skin by placing a warm hand over it or by placing the affected part in warm water (~41°C max.) until re-warmed.

it has been a privilege serving you over the past six years. Last November, Council deliberated and voted on Mid-Cycle budget adjustments including a tax rate reduction for 2017 to 1.5%.

Council proposed a 1.5% rebate from the Fiscal Stability Fund, effectively bringing the 2017 tax rate increase to 0%. Council had directed administration to lower the tax rate, which included a plan to reduce the budget through a combination of corporate funding sources, department savings from operating efficiencies, and service reductions, which totalled $73 million in relief for citizens. As Calgarians have expressed, Council hopes a zero percent tax rate will signal to the Alberta government that Albertans need relief from the Province too. Forecasts indicate a recovery might not be expected until 2018. under Council’s direction, administration will examine the feasibility of another zero percent tax rate for 2018.

i am happy to share with you that this year i will be on the Transportation & Transit Standing Policy Committee. This work will provide me with even more opportunities to contribute to transportation conversations and decisions, which are among your highest priorities, particularly Ring Road planning. Another important priority in Ward 6 is crime and safety; i will be serving as Vice Chair of Community & Protective Services, which provides the backbone of services for our quality of life. i am stepping down as Chair of the Audit Committee, a role in which i served for the past three years, but will remain Vice Chair. i am proud of our several dozen internal audit reports about City operations, which can be found under Audit Committee at agendaminutes.calgary.ca, including many recommendations made to City business units to improve efficiencies. To view all of the committees i serve on, please visit calgary.ca/ward6 on the ‘About’ section.

Happy new Year Ward 6!

Mike Ellis, MLA Calgary-West

i want to thank the many of you who attended my Open House in November. it was great to discuss the important issues in our community. i also was very pleased to be a part

of the Remembrance Day ceremony at Battalion Park this year. it is always important to stop and take stock of how lucky we are to live in a safe and caring society like Canada.

Work continues in the legislature by your PC Caucus to get the true issues of Albertans onto the table. Of considerable concern to us is the imposition by the government of a carbon tax. When Alberta oil and gas is hurting, this tax will not make life any easier for oil and gas companies. Our caucus continues to implore the Premier and her cabinet to consider shelving this proposal. i also believe that it is critically important that we do everything we can to make Alberta attractive to investment – something that a punishing additional tax on business and consumers doesn’t do. even during this time of low oil prices, investment in Saskatchewan has been growing. With

a government sending the right signals, investment in Alberta would be far better than it is today.

The increase in gang related crime in Calgary weighs on my mind heavily, and i would like to take a moment to thank those in law enforcement for the hard work they do every day. As a former police officer, i recognize the challenging and dangerous nature of the job. i have been working in the Legislature to curb the distribution of fentanyl, a powerful drug, and have been pleased to have some success thus far. As Justice critic, i’ll continue to work hard to review the practices and policies put forward by the government on this matter, and identify key areas where we can do better.

i welcome your comments on this and any other matter you feel is important. i can be reached at 403-216-5439 or [email protected].

Never say the words Give neW life to your christmas tree!Turn your real ChrisTmas Tree into useful mulch instead of garbage through The City’s Christmas Tree Recycling program. By recycling trees into mulch, you can keep waste out of our landfills and reduce harmful greenhouse gas emissions.

This year The City’s Christmas Tree Recycling program will be drop-off only. We will not be collecting trees door-to-door. Instead we’re asking residents to meet us half way, by taking their trees to one of our 15 designated drop-off locations between December 26 and January 31.

The trees should be free of lights, ornaments, tinsel, tree stands and string, and should not be wrapped or bagged. Mulch from recycled Christmas trees will be available to residents at no cost at the East Calgary landfill, while quantities last.

For more information, or to find the drop-off location nearest you, visit calgary.ca/christmastree.

riNG roaD: in late November, most homeowners received an email from the NDHA indicating that, due to ring road construction, we will be losing approximately 90% of the trees and shrubs along our entranceway between glenmore Trail and the roundabout (if you did not get the email it is because we do not have your email address). Removal will begin in spring 2017. The NDHA invited recipients to attend the public information sessions scheduled Nov. 28th-30th in order to get up to date on all aspects of the project as they relate to Discovery Ridge. An invitation was also sent out by the Discovery Ridge Community Association (DRCA) to all of its members.

A nerve was obviously ‘touched’; attendance by Discovery Ridge residents was very impressive! Thank you to all who turned out. Serious, valid concerns were raised, including questions about lane proximity along our northern border and its related traffic safety issues, insufficient sound attenuation barriers, the extreme length and height of the bridge out of our community, lack of substantial bike/walking path connectors and the possible permanent loss of all foliage at our entrance. unfortunately, many residents left the meeting feeling extremely unhappy with the answers they received.

The DRCA has been working for several years to present the concerns of Discovery Ridge to Alberta Transportation, the City of Calgary and our various political representatives at both levels of government. Because the entrance landscaping (our mandate) is now an issue, the NDHA is able to join forces with the DRCA to add our voice to the mix. We will do all we can to have our entrance greenspace rebuilt to current form.

if you want to receive updates on ring road developments beyond the landscaping issues we now face, however, the NDHa strongly encourages all residents of our community to support the DrCa by purchasing a $25/year CoMMuNity assoCiatioN membership. www.discoveryridge.com This will allow you to register your email address with them and receive regular updates directly to your inbox. The DRCA is your ring road voice – please help them out!

We are always happy to hear from our NDHA members; please access our website at www.ndha.ca for NDHA News updates or to send an email - you can also call us at 403.237.9595.

Planes, Trains & Kids Travel Opportunities to travel for me came later in my life. When i did get the chance to go somewhere, i had to make the decision to either stay at home and wait until my kids were “older”, or, take them with my husband and me when a trip presented itself. i closed my eyes, wished for the best and jumped at the chance to go, with our kids along for the ride, hoping i wouldn’t regret my decision. it’s been almost 10 years now since i’ve made that decision and we’ve been travelling since our oldest was 6 months old. We have been lucky enough to travel to many places across Canada (from the east coast to the west coast), all of the islands of Hawaii, the Mayan Riviera in Mexico, Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic, Disneyland, San Francisco, San Diego, Disney World, a Disney Cruise, London, Paris, istanbul, and many places throughout italy (including the Amalfi Coast, Rome, Florence and Venice). Most recently we travelled as a family to Club Med in ixtapa, Mexico! We have more plans to travel in the future including our next trip to Jamaica and a southern Caribbean cruise!

Planes, Trains & Kids Travel was created out of my love for researching the next great destination, planning our daily itinerary, and continuing to explore the amazing world around us! Travelling has become my passion, and i’m excited to help you find the perfect place for you and your family. i want you to not only arrive at your next destination, but to experience

it with your kids, whether it’s at an all-inclusive beach vacation, a Caribbean cruise, a european adventure, or someplace more unique and exotic. i’m a travel specialist for Hawaii, Disney, universal Orlando, and Club Med. i have access to amazing suppliers throughout the world that know how to work with families, and for those trips when the kids don’t come along!!

Let me do the research for you. No need for you to spend hours at your computer. Put your trust in me to listen to your wish list, understand your concerns, and help make your next adventure happen!
