New Declassifications in Russian Archives 2010.
Volume 11 (2010) of the declassification bulletin issued by Russia’s Federal Archival Agency gives an over-view of a multitude of declassified files in Russian state archives. The following declassifications might be of interest for studies on communism:• The Archive of the President of the Russian Federation (APRF) has declassified selected files on CPSU
policy concerning youth organisations, social security, dwelling policy, culture and the arts, sports, andmilitary issues. The overall chronology ranges from 1919 to 1965.
• The Russian State Archive of Contemporary History (RGANI) has declassified inter alia materials on: theconnection of the CPSU Central Committee with socialist countries in 1989–1990; Anastas Mikoian’svisits to the US, Japan and Indonesia in 1959 and 1964; Evgenii Preobrazhenskii as oppositionist (in-cluding correspondence from the 1920’s and 1930’s as well as rehabilitation materials from the 1960’s).
• The Russian State Archive of Social and Political History (RGASPI) has declassified the files of theKomsomol’s »Sector of Secret Documents« (1962–1978), dealing mostly with the organisation of inter-national relations.
• The State Archive of the Russian Federation (GARF) has declassified diverse resolutions of the Council ofMinisters of the Soviet Union of the post-war period, documents on Anastas Mikoian’s trips to foreigncountries, NKVD-MVD files on passport matters, documents on the nationalist underground in Wes-tern Ukraine (1945), and files of the Soviet Military Administration in Germany (SMAD/SVAG)concerning Mecklenburg, Saxonia-Anhalt, Thuringia and Saxonia.
• The Russian State Military Archive (RGVA) has declassified files of the Secretariat of the Peoples’ Com-missar of Defense (1918–1940), the Inner Troops of the MVD (1968–69), and the Main Administra-tion for Prisoners of War and Internees (GUPVI) concerning the years 1943 to 1952.
• The Russian State Archive of Economy (RGAE) has declassified files of the USSR’s Ministry of Finances(1927–1932), the State Bank (1983–1991) and of some other Soviet institutions.

Moscow: The Archive of the President of the Russian Federation Plans Release of Documents.
The Archive of the President of the Russian Federation has, beginning from 1993, passed several of its (mostly secret) holdings to other archival institutions in order to make them accessible for research. This was the case with large parts of the Soviet Politburo holdings and Stalin’s correspondence. After new mate-rials were not released for a long time, it has been announced on the official website of Russia’s Federal Archives Agency that according to an order of President Medvedev, a new plan of handing over historical documents has been prepared. From 2010 until 2012, over 20.000 files are supposed to be transferred to federal archives, including further Politburo documents and the archives of Brezhnev and Gorbachev. The HOPE digitization project (2010–2013) brings together a partnership of eleven European social his-tory institutions with highly significant but scattered archives and library collections from social history and the history of the labour movement from the late 18th to the beginning of the 21st century, comprising
to date at least 3 million digital items (pictures, books, archival documents, sound, moving image et cetera). The project will make these items available through Europeana, the European digital library (www.euro-peana.eu/portal) and the Labour History Portal (www.labourhistory.net). HOPE falls under the aegis of IALHI, the network organization for social history archives, libraries and documentation centers, and is co-financed by the European Commission. Europeana is a multilingual access point to search Europe’s distributed digital cultural heritage online. It gives users direct access to over 10 million digital objects on European culture and history from archives, libraries, museums and research institutes.
HOPE started up in May 2010 as a three-year cooperation project and is being co-funded by the EU through the ICT Policy Support Programme (Information and Communication Technologies – ICT/ Policy Support Programme – PSP). Kent, UK: New Online Review Journal Marx & Philosophy Review of Books.
The Marx & Philosophy Society, located at the University of Kent, has launched in early 2010 a new review journal called Marx & Philosophy Review of Books (ISSN 2042–2016) with the aim to publish »online reviews of books in the area of Marxism and philosophy interpreted broadly as regard both ›Marxism‹ and ›philo-sophy‹«, as the aims statement goes. The website already features a fairly large number of reviews, and the books presented go far beyond just Marxian philosophy and cover various topics relevant for scholars of communism. Paris: Afrikanische Archive der sozialen Bewegungen.
Unter dem Titel »Archives ›africaines‹ des syndicats et partis français« fand am 8. Oktober 2010 in Paris eine von CODHOS (Collectif des centres de documentation en histoire ouvrière et sociale) organisierte Konferenz statt. Im Mittelpunkt standen die Überlieferungen der französischen Gewerkschafts- und poli-tischen Organisationen der Arbeiterbewegung über die Beziehungen zu den afrikanischen Ländern und Bewegungen, besonders zwischen der »Ex-métropole« und den Kolonien. Der Ursprung der Gewerkschafts-bewegung in den französischen afrikanischen Ländern geht auf die Volksfrontperiode (1936–1939) zurück. CODHOS plant, ein Verzeichnis der Bestände und eine Kartierung der betreffenden Archive anzulegen.

Paris: Archives of Messali Hadj.
The daughter of Messali Hadj, Djanina Benkhelfa, has assigned all his political and personal papers at her dispo-sal to the Centre d’Etudes et de Recherches sur les Mouvements Trotskyste et Révolutionnaires Internationaux (CERMTRI). Messali Hadj (1898–1974) was member of the SFIO and subsequently the French Communist Party (PCF). He co-organized the Congress of the Antiimperialist League in Brussels (1927), and was excluded from the PCF at the beginning of the 1930s, opposing the Comintern policy of the »Third Period«. Already in 1926, Hadj was founder of the »North African Star« (»Etolie Nord-africaine«), dissolved by the French government in 1937, of the »Algerian People’s Party« (»Parti du peuple algérien«, PPA), formed almost immediately after this and dissolved by the French government in 1939, of the »Movement for the Triumph of Democratic Liberties« (»Mouvement pour le triomphe des libertés démocratiques«, MTLD), founded in 1946, and finally of the »Al-gerian National Movement« (»Mouvement National Algérien«, MNA), formed in 1954 and subjected to brutalrepression from both the French authorities and the »National Liberation Front« (»Front de Libération Natio-nale«, FLN), whose nationalism Hadj was strictly opposing. Zürich: Archive der Partei der Arbeit der Schweiz (PdAS) im Schweizerischen Sozialarchiv.
Im Sommer 2007 konnte das Schweizerische Sozialarchiv umfangreiche Archivbestände der Partei der Arbeit der Schweiz übernehmen. Dabei handelte es sich um Akten, die im Sekretariat der PdAS an der Rotwandstrasse in Zürich und an weiteren Orten in und um Zürich aufbewahrt wurden: die Archive der Partei der Arbeit der Schweiz und der PdA des Kantons Zürich, das Archiv der Verlagsgenossenschaft »Vorwärts« und das Archiv des Kommunistischen Jugendverbandes (KJV). […] Die Archivbestände derPdA sind aus nachvollziehbaren Gründen nicht einfach frei zugänglich. Für die Konsultation braucht eseine Bewilligung der Parteileitung. Erfreulicherweise werden Gesuche um Einsichtnahme aber sehr speditiv und unkompliziert behandelt. So wurden die PdA-Archive in den letzten zwei Jahren für wissenschaftlicheZwecke bereits rege benutzt. Ghent/Amsterdam: The Archives of Amsab-ISG, the Library and Papers of Ernest Mandel.
The Amsab-Institute for Social History (Amsab-ISG) in Ghent, Belgium, has acquired the library of Ernest Esra Mandel (Frankfurt am Main 1923 – Brussels 1995) (see: www.amsab.be/). The Belgian historicus and economist and one of the most comprehensive Marxist theoreticians was a leader of the Unified Secretari-at of the Fourth International. His library encompasses up to 10.000 volumes of great thematic diversity, including the heavy bound volumes of Die Neue Zeit and the theoretical works of Marx, Engels, Rosa Lu-xemburg, Kautsky and Bebel. Most of the books deal with the economic development and the history of the labor movement. The archives of Amsab-ISG furthermore include important personal fonds and ma-terials concerning mostly Flemish communists, Maoists or Trotskyists, such as André and Chantal de Smet, Guy Desolre, Peter Duuring, Jos Geudens, Adhémar Hennaut, Paul Libois, Leo Michielsen, Frans Morriens, Louis Roth, Jef Turf, Emile van Ceulen, Flor Vandekerckhove, Guillaume van den Borre, Bert van Hoorick, Henri Vaume, Georges Vereeken and Jaak Withagen.
The papers of Ernest Mandel had been acquired in 1996 by the International Institute of Social Histo-ry (IISH) in Amsterdam, embracing 20.87 shelf meters for the time period 1943 and 1945–1995 (see: www.iisg.nl/archives/en/files/m/10801432.php). These archives reflect particularly the theoretical and practical achievments of the new Left in a transnational perspective.

Bonn: Bibliography of the ITF.
The library of the Friedrich Ebert Foundation (Bonn-Bad Godesberg, Germany), one of Europe’s most important libraries on the history of the workers’ movement, has released a detailed bibliography of the printed materials (journals, newspapers, protocols, yearbook and activity reports) issued by the Internatio-nal Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF). The global federation of transport workers’ trade unions was founded in 1896 and still exists today. Under Edo Fimmen (1882–1942), who was the ITF chairman from 1919 until his death, the federation undertook important measures in support of Republican Spain and anti-Nazi resistance, where it also cooperated with unorthodox communists such as Hermann Knüfken. Udo Grashoff, Universität Leipzig (Germany):» Verrat und Verräter im kommunistischen Widerstand gegen das NS-Regime 1933 bis 1945.
Habilitationsprojekt.
Gegenstand dieses Forschungsprojektes am Lehrstuhl für Neuere und Zeitgeschichte ist ein durch die DDR-Historiografie tabuisierter Aspekt des Widerstandes gegen das nationalsozialistische Herrschaftssystem: Verrat in den Reihen der kommunistischen Widerstandskämpfer. Die Untersuchung zielt in einem ersten Schritt auf eine Bestandsaufnahme und Zusammenfassung des aktuellen Wissensstandes. Dabei soll »Verrat« nur im Kontext des kommunistischen Loyalitätszusammenhanges untersucht werden. Es geht also um solche Personen, die aus Sicht der KPD ihre Genossen (Bezugspunkt Partei) bzw. ihre Überzeugungen (Bezugspunkt Ideologie) »verraten« haben. Andere Verrats-Zuweisungen wie Landesverrat (Bezugspunkt Nation) oder Menschheitsverrat (Bezugspunkt Menschenrechte) werden nicht behandelt.
Schwerpunkte des Forschungsvorhabens sind:
1. Zentrale antifaschistische Mythen der DDR, die obligatorischer Bestandteil der Lehrpläne der DDR-Schulen waren, sollen hinsichtlich des Verrats-Aspektes – wo notwendig – einer fundierten und diffe-renzierten Revision unterzogen werden.
2. Bisherigen Untersuchungen (z. B. von Wilhelm Mensing über V-Männer der Gestapo im Ruhrgebiet)soll eine eigene Lokalstudie zum mitteldeutschen Industriegebiet an die Seite gestellt werden.
3. Insgesamt soll »Verrat« stärker als in bisherigen Untersuchungen in seinen Rückwirkungen auf die KPDbetrachtet werden. Während bisher »Verrat« von kommunistischen Widerständlern vorwiegend aus derPerspektive der Gestapo rekonstruiert und damit auf die Auswirkungen des Verrats im Tätigkeitsbereich der NS-Geheimpolizei fokussiert wurde, wodurch die KPD in diesen Untersuchungen als passives Ob-jekt erscheint, sollen auch die Reaktionen der Kommunisten, die Versuche der Spitzelenttarnung und-abwehr thematisiert werden.
4. Ein weiterer Schwerpunkt des Habilitationsprojektes ist der Umgang mit »Verrat« im kommunistischen Widerstandskampf in der SBZ/DDR nach 1945 (z. B. Ermittlungen des MfS zu vermeintlichen undtatsächlichen Verrätern, Schicksale zu Unrecht Beschuldigter).
Es ist also sowohl eine Realgeschichte des Verrats im Kontext des kommunistischen Widerstandes zu schreiben, als auch eine Geschichte der unmittelbaren sowie retrospektiven Reaktionen der Kommunis-

Matthias Neumann, University of East Anglia, Norwich (Great Britain):» »Thinking Globally« – Internationalism and Workers’ Identity. A Comparison of Workers in
Liverpool, Hamburg and St Petersburg/Petrograd/Leningrad, 1910–1925. Research project.
»The working men have no country«1 Marx and Engels pronounced in the Communist Manifesto. Inter-nationalism was central to a Socialist ideology that gave a class basis to the idea of brotherhood transcending national boundaries. Fused together through the development of international capitalism, socialist revolu-tions were expected to start in one or another country, but inevitably would become a world affair. Worldrevolution would eventually render nations and thus nationality a redundant part of peoples’ identity –globalisation à la Marx.
Ideologies exist at the junction between theory and practice, grounded in abstract ideas and everyday political reality. It is thus a real shortcoming that the historical study of internationalism has generally taken the form of intellectual and political history focusing on great personalities and institutions. Even the recent boom in the study of »transnationalism« and »globalisation« with its emphasis on diaspora and transcen-dence of borders has done little to remedy this deficit.2
This project, thus, sets out to shift this focus. Its originality lies in tackling the meaning of internatio-nalism at rank-and-file levels of the Socialist/Marxist movement. It will examine the divergent ways in which internationalism was understood and their expression in the social practices in working-class communities. It focuses on a momentous period and on three countries: Germany, with the largest and strongest radical socialist movement in Europe; Russia/Soviet Russia, about to become the first Communist state; and Britain with an established but less militant labour movement. Given their distinctive political, social and cultural developments, and importance in the theoretical evolution and practical pursuit of international revolution, this trio provides a valuable basis for comparative analysis.
This approach utilises case studies of Liverpool, Hamburg and St Petersburg as a prism. Each was a major port; and a large-scale industrial complex; and each generated militant workers’ movements which were heavily, though unevenly, influenced by Socialist/Marxist ideas, that have left sufficient records for rank-and-file perceptions and identities to be reconstructed. Workers in these cities were part of the prime constituency for Socialist ideology, yet at the same time they were the product of their own national culture.
The destruction of World War I saw mass nationalism in Europe mobilised, the tensions between inter-nationalism and the idea of patriotism laid bare, and the Second International torn apart. Yet within the Socialist movement the idea was not abandoned and instead was brandished in the multiple upheavals of 1917–19. Three main research questions will explore the extent and consistency of revolutionary and re-formist internationalism among radical workers c.1910–1925. First, the issue of tensions between class consciousness/allegiance and national identity/allegiance. Which had priority? Second, how intensely was this balance influenced by the major events and developments of the period? How far did internationalist attitudes ebb, flow and change? Third, was there a difference between theory and practice, between preaching or endorsing internationalism and living it at the local level? In sifting the evidence, the focus will be placed on two dimensions of internationalism, the »domestic« dimension and the »foreign« dimension. So far as the first is concerned, each case-study provides the opportunity to test the extent to which internationalism shaped radical workers’ perception and treatment of ethnic minorities and foreign immigrants within the

workforce of their own working-class community. It will also be possible to explore the attitude of labour activists and rank-and-file workers towards empire, the colonial rule exercised by their own nation and the colonial peoples over whom their own nation exercised imperial dominion. The ›foreign‹ dimension of internationalism will be explored by scrutinising, comparing and contrasting perceptions of and attitudes towards workers’ movements abroad and responses to war and revolution, strikes and uprisings, violence and repression in other countries. The depth and extent of internationalism among radical workers and the labour movement in general will be measured in part by their reactions to national calls to arms and to highly controversial political positions such as that of revolutionary defeatism.
The study will explore how far internationalism was »lived« by rank-and-file workers within formal and semi-formal organisations, and how it was communicated to their constituency. The discourse on internatio-nalism in local newspapers, leaflets, and debates of communist and socialist parties, trade unions and workers’ clubs will be examined. The analysis will further explore whether and how this discourse created collective criteria for articulating an internationalist interpretation of events; and the extent to which this was transformed into social practices or real political actions expressing solidarity across national and state boundaries. In Janu-ary 1920, for instance, the creation of Councils of Action in Liverpool opposing any British intervention against the Soviet Union became an active expression of working-class solidarity. It is at this point that the interplay between events, on the one hand, and social circumstances and ideology on the other, will come to the fore and that the nature and extent of collective internationalism among radical workers will be analysed in the wider historical context. Careful reconstruction and comparison of the varying perceptions of internationalism will give texture and depth to the portrait of collective attitudes within the three workers communities. It will allow exploration of the salience, relevance and consistency of internationalist attitudes in daily life. And it will provide insight into the extent to which internationalism was or was not correlated with differences in age and gender. Ultimately, fresh insight into the »picture from below« afforded by a comparative approach will facili-tate a broader reassessment of early twentieth-century internationalism, integrating existing intellectual and institutional histories with grassroots attitudes, perceptions, practices and actions.
The project can build upon a huge literature on workers’ identity, the Socialist/Communist movement, and working class reactions to the First World War in all three countries. Ralf Hoffrogge, University of Potsdam (Germany): » Werner Scholem. A Political Biography (1895–1940). PhD Project.
This dissertation project, supervised by Prof. Mario Kessler, focuses on the biography of the Communist politician Werner Scholem, a leading figure on the »ultra-left« wing of the German Communist Party (KPD) during the 1920s. The idea of the project is to present a full-length biography of Werner Scholem, concen-trating on his activities as communist politician since 1921. Other important aspects like his family back-ground, his political socialization and his later persecution by the National Socialists are also subject of research and will be integrated into one coherent narrative.
Werner Scholem was born in 1895 as the third son of a Jewish entrepreneur, Arthur Scholem, owner of a printing shop. Werner found himself in opposition to his fathers’ nationalist political views. Together with his younger brother, Gerhard (later known as Gershom Scholem), he joined the Zionist youth-organization »Jung Juda«. Unlike Gershom, Werner abandoned Zionism and joined the Socialist youth movement (Arbeiterjugend) in 1912. During World War I Werner had to serve as a foot soldier, a traumatizing experience that both radi-calized his socialist views and revived his connection to Judaism. During the war he joined the Independent Socialist Party (USPD) and in 1919 started working for one of its newspapers. In 1920 Scholem joined the Communist Party and in 1921 was elected to a seat in the Prussian parliament (Preußischer Landtag). In 1924 he became a member of the national parliament (Reichstag) and the Central Committee of the KPD. As head of organizational affairs (Organisationsleiter) Werner Scholem was a leading figure in the »Bolshevization« of
German Communism. When the ultra-left wing of the party lost power in 1925, Scholem went into opposi-tion. In 1926 he was expelled from the party for his resistance to Stalin’s politics. Scholem maintained contact with several oppositional Trotskyite and other groups and persons, but dropped his political career in order to study law at Berlin University. In 1933, a few months before his university education would be finished, he was arrested and charged with high treason by the Nazi regime. Scholem remained in custody as a political prisoner in several concentration camps. In July 1940 he was murdered in Buchenwald.
Werner Scholem’s biography represents central aspects and contradictory trajectories that were typical for 20th century German history. Many central issues, such as the rise of anti-Semitism within German society or the uneasy relationship between Zionism and Socialism have to be taken into account and can be analyzed from a new perspective. For the social and intellectual history of the Communist movement in Germany, research on Scholem might give new insights into the Stalinization of the German Communist Party and the ongoing controversy of its »internal« political dynamics vs. »external« influences from the Soviet Union. Scholem, for example, was at first an admirer of Stalin and pushed forward his politics of Bolshevization, but in 1925 he became one of Stalin’s first and fiercest political opponents. The reason for Scholem’s opposition was Stalin’s turn from a policy that promoted international revolution to the policy of »Socialism in a single country«.
A political biography of Werner Scholem may discuss these problems from a perspective within the KPD while at the same time help to understand the emergence of general political radicalism in Weimar Germa-ny. These tendencies have to be contextualized with experiences of World War I and the following German Revolution 1918 – events that shaped not only Werner Scholem, but a whole generation.Contact: [email protected]
Aleksei Ju. Suslov, University of Technology (Kazan’/Republic of Tatarstan, Russia), Konstantin N. Morozov, Memorial (Moscow/Russia): » Neopopulism and Neopopulist Parties in Twentieth Century Russia: A Bibliography.
During 2008 and 2009, Russian historians K. Morozov (Moscow) and A. Suslov (Kazan’), supported by a grant of the Russian Humanities Fund, prepared the manuscript of Neopopulism and Neopopulist Parties in Twentieth Century Russia: A Bibliography for publication.
The main objective of the project was a scholarly generalization and systematization of biographical and bibliographical information on the history of the largest Russian neopopulist parties (such as the Socialist Revolutionaries) for the duration of their existence both in Russia and abroad. The directory consists of three major sections: »Sources«, »Literature«, and »Researchers«. The section »Sources« includes a descrip-tion of documents on neopopulism and neopopulist parties in the main Russian state archives. This section also includes a list of neopopulist periodical press before and after 1917. The »Literature« section aims to encompass the vast field of publications on the research subject. More than 1500 titles have been processed. Since including publications of a general nature would have substantially increased the amount of pointers and made it more difficult to use, a rigorous selection has been made in this aspect. The section on »Re-searchers« selectively includes information on Russian and foreign historians engaged in the history of neopopulism. Questionnaires as well as personal interviews and personal information from other sources have been used for this section. Memorial, St Petersburg, Russian Federation:» The Virtual Gulag Museum. Internet-Project.
The Virtual Museum of the Gulag (www.gulagmuseum.org), created in 2004 by the Research and Infor-mation Centre »Memorial« in St Petersburg, is a virtual resource that collects and publicises material on the topic of political repression in the former Soviet Union, mainly from local Russian museums. The website consists of a searchable database in which each exhibit (items from local museums, the museums

themselves, mass burial sites, memorials and non-museum objects such as landscapes) is accompanied by a detailed, museum-standard label. The Virtual Museum of the Gulag is today at a stage at which the creation of virtual exhibitions out of the existing material has replaced the accumulation of new visual material as the most important task, marking the transition from an information resource to a virtual museum.
In Russia there are no dedicated state programmes commemorating the Gulag and the topic of political repression and the labour camp system is barely touched upon in history curricula. Memory of the Gulag is relegated to the regional level where exists an abundance of remote museums and exhibitions, many of them in a precarious state. The Virtual Museum of the Gulag has set itself the task of integrating these various initiatives into a united whole, without overriding or destroying the individual character of parti-cipating institutions, thereby providing not only a fuller picture of the history of political repression, but also a reflection of the contemporary memorial landscape concerning this topic.
»Memorial« has found about 300 different museums and institutions in the collections of which thetopic of the Gulag is represented, including municipal museums, privately owned museums and museums attached to enterprises or schools. The Virtual Museum of the Gulag’s virtual archive contains more than 8,000 images from about 100 museums, 500 burial sites and 400 monuments. Most of these museums are situated in Russia, however, the Virtual Gulag Museum also cooperates with institutions in Lithuania, Latvia, Ukraine, and Kazakhstan.
Bundesstiftung Aufarbeitung, Berlin (Germany):» Erinnerungsorte an die kommunistischen Diktaturen im Europa des 20. Jahrhunderts.
Die Bundesstiftung zur Aufarbeitung der SED-Diktatur erarbeitet eine Dokumentation zu Erinnerungs-orten (Gedenkstätten, Gedenkzeichen und Museen), die an Opposition, Widerstand und Verfolgung durch die kommunistischen Regime in den Ländern Ost-, Ostmittel- und Südosteuropas sowie in den Nachfol-gestaaten der ehemaligen Sowjetunion erinnern. In die Dokumentation werden darüber hinaus jene Staaten Europas einbezogen, die zeitweilig im Einflussbereich der UdSSR lagen und in denen unter einem sowje-tischen Besatzungsregime politisches Unrecht geschah (bspw. Österreich).
Ziel des Projekts ist es, möglichst umfassend die (materiellen) Formen der Auseinandersetzung mit den kommunistischen Diktaturen des 20. Jahrhunderts zu erfassen. Damit entsteht im Rahmen des Projektes eine Dokumentation über die »Topographie der Erinnerung« in den jeweiligen Regionen, die wiederum einen Zugang zu den nationalen Erinnerungskulturen und -diskursen im europäischen Kontext ermöglicht. Mit diesem Projekt trägt die Stiftung ihrem Auftrag Rechnung, die Erinnerung an das geschehene Unrecht und die Opfer im öffentlichen Bewusstsein wach zu halten und die internationale Zusammenarbeit bei der Auseinandersetzung mit den kommunistischen Diktaturen zu fördern. Les bâtisseurs de l’Empire de Russie, puis de l’URSS, durent apprendre à gouverner une population multi-ethnique parlant plus d’une centaine de langues. Progressivement cette cacophonie fut transformée selon des modalités combinant quête d’assimilation et respect de la diversité linguistique. En se penchant sur l’histoire des régulations linguistiques dans l’ancien espace dominé par la langue russe, cet ouvrage s’intéresse à la construction des États russes et soviétiques, mais aussi aux héritages de cette histoire dans les États issus de l’éclatement de ces empires. Ce livre souligne l’importance des réflexions et tentatives intellectuelles, scientifiques et politiques en provenance de cette partie du monde, expérience qui a permis l’alphabétisation de masse et la transformation par l’introduction de l’écrit d’une population plurilingue.
Des projets souvent radicaux, autant utopiques que modernisateurs, furent portés par des nombreuses élites: »nationalistes« et bolcheviks firent de la langue un outil de transformation sociale et politique essen-tiel à leurs projets de réformes des sociétés. Exploitant des archives inédites, cet ouvrage explore les formes d’intervention sur les langues en tant que processus complexes d’interactions entre l’état, les savants et les sociétés. Ce livre propose une interprétation nouvelle de la naissance du communisme en France et de son moment symbolique, le célèbre Congrès de Tours en décembre 1920. À l’encontre des interprétations traditionnelles qui le présentent comme un accident ou, au contraire, comme une fatalité inscrite dès 1914, Romain Du-coulombier propose de restituer toute sa force à la dynamique de la scission qui a donné le jour, à l’issue de la Grande Guerre, au Parti communiste, modèle du parti ouvrier de masse.
Le livre restitue d’abord son originalité fondamentale à la génération de l’armistice, »née de la guerre« et de la lutte pacifiste contre celle-ci. Au nom du refus de la guerre, du rejet de la participation ministérielle et de la fidélité à la révolution, cette relève militante s’est tournée vers le bolchevisme, qui lui offrait une méthode, des slogans et des pratiques adaptées à son besoin de renouveau. Fascinée par Lénine et son œuvre en Russie, elle ne s’est jamais soumise passivement aux directives de Moscou: elle a au contraire adopté volontairement, et adapté tactiquement ses formules à la situation politique française. Ce livre propose une lecture renouvelée des valeurs, des pratiques, des formes de sociabilité de cette génération de passeurs, traumatisée par le conflit, qui bouleverse les manières de militer en France. Cette relève militante intransigeante, animée d’une véritable haine de la social-démocratie, a voulu créer un »parti de type nouveau« capable de régénérer le socialisme, compromis par la participation aux ministères de Défense nationale pendant la guerre. À l’aide d’importantes archives souvent inédites, Romain Ducoulombier reconstitue la marche à la scission, menée avec enthousiasme contre l’ancienne oligarchie socialiste accusée de trahir l’idéal révolutionnaire. Le livre permet donc de com-prendre comment et pourquoi le communisme en France a été, à la différence d’autres tentatives tout au long du XXe siècle, une refonte politique radicale du personnel et de l’idéal socialistes français.
Loin de l’histoire traditionnelle des »origines« du communisme, le livre s’intéresse aux filiations idéolo-giques et aux déformations des idées provoquées par leur circulation internationale et leur introduction en France. Reconstituant les circuits de cette circulation intense, Romain Ducoulombier réécrit l’histoire du premier communisme français en montrant qu’elle prépare et annonce la dérive inquisitoriale de la période stalinienne. C’est aussi toute une jeunesse révolutionnaire née de la guerre qui reprend vie. Romain Ducou-lombier dresse des portraits saisissants des acteurs connus et inconnus de la naissance du communisme français. Il offre une description passionnante des débats, controverses et manœuvres qui aboutissent, avec l’intervention active des bolcheviks, à la rupture de Tours puis à l’élimination de ses promoteurs. Créer un parti mondial de la révolution pour que les représentants du prolétariat prennent le pouvoir dans divers pays de la planète, tel est le dessein de la IIIe Internationale ouvrière qui se forme après le désastre meurtrier de la Première Guerre mondiale. La révolution russe d’Octobre 1917 avait montré l’exemple, s’ouvrait alors, selon ses partisans, le chemin d’une possible révolution mondiale …
Cet ouvrage retrace l’histoire de l’Internationale communiste de sa naissance à Moscou le 2 mars 1919 jusqu’à sa dissolution en 1943. Puissamment organisé, le Comintern marquera de son empreinte l’histoire du XXe siècle, il participera aux luttes libératrices de l’entre-deux-guerres, offrira aux classes populaires des voies d’accès à la vie politique en même temps qu’il justifiera les massacres de masse des purges staliniennes. L’Internationale communiste permettra l’expression des aspirations anticolonialistes de nombreux militants asiatiques, arabes et africains tout en exerçant un contrôle étroit de l’activité des partis nationaux par le recours à la violence physique et symbolique.
Funeste production de l’imaginaire pour certains, entreprise essentiellement criminogène pour d’autres, le communisme est ici appréhendé comme une réalité autrement plus complexe. Ce livre contribue à dé-crypter le sens d’un mouvement mondial qui a porté les espoirs de centaines de millions de femmes et d’hommes tout en acceptant d’en sacrifier des millions parmi ses partisans et ses adversaires. Il présente les différents épisodes de l’histoire du Comintern ainsi que les débats théoriques et stratégiques qui l’ont tra-versé. Il porte enfin une attention particulière aux cercles dirigeants comme aux cadres du mouvement communiste formés dans ses différentes sections nationales. Il s’attarde de manière précise sur la répression stalinienne qui a frappé une part importante des kominterniens mais il affronte également la participation des dirigeants du Comintern à cette répression dont la xénophobie préfigure la liquidation en mai 1943.
Cet ouvrage est complété par un cédérom mis à jour comprenant près de 800 biographies de militants du Comintern de Belgique, de France, du Luxembourg et de Suisse.

In the Name of Stalin: Russian Radio Programme on Stalinism Discontinued.
On August 21, 2010, the last Episode of Imenem Stalina (In the Name of Stalin) has been aired. For two years, Ekho Moskvy, a prominent off-mainstream Russian radio station, has been running this history pro-gramme dedicated to the Stalin era and problems of Stalinism. In cooperation with ROSSPEN and the Boris El’tsin Foundation, the programme invited reknown historians for extensive interviews (around 40 minutes each) on single aspects of Stalinism, also letting them answer questions from listeners. The transcripts of the large interviews (in Russian) as well as the audio (and in some case video) recordings are still availa-ble on the radio station’s website. The following list covers the episodes from 2010. For previous episodes, see The International Newsletter of Communist Studies (2010), no 23.

David King, British print designer (Sunday Times) and long-time collector of Early Soviet photography and print materials, most famous for the photograph anthology The Commissar Vanishes (1997), now has released a large anthology that presents an overview over his collection. In RED STAR OVER RUSSIA: A Visual History of the Soviet Union From the Revolution to the Death of Stalin, King presents the most intriguing il-lustrations and photographs from his collection. In late 2008, a film has been released in Estonia under the title December Heat (Detsembrikuumus, dir.: Asko Kase), attempting to reconstruct the events of December 1924, when Estonian communists, supported by a large group of exile-Estonian revolutionaries from the Soviet Union, mainly Red Army officers, and en-dorsed by major forces within the Comintern, attemted a coup d’état in Estonia. Jaan Anvelt, Yrjö Sirola and other Comintern superiors participated in planning and carrying out the failed uprising, which is still not fully retraced by Russian archive documents. Vordergründig ist der Film eine humorvolle und leicht melancholische Lebensgeschichte aus dem Ost-Berliner Kiez um den Boxhagener Platz im Jahre 1968, nach dem Roman von Torsten Schulz (192 S., Berlin, Ullstein, 2004), der Professor für Praktische Dramaturgie an der Hochschule für Film und Fernse-hen in Potsdam-Babelsberg ist und zugleich das Drehbuch geschrieben hat.
Am Beispiel von drei Generationen wird eine Lebens- und Familiengeschichte erzählt, aus der die gera-de an der ältesten Generation dargestellte, vortrefflich gespielte Liebesgeschichte herausragt. Handelnde Personen sind Oma Otti, die mit 85 bereits ihren sechsten Ehemann überlebt, Enkel Holger, der junge Pionier an der Juri-Gagarin-Oberschule, dessen Vater, ein parteitreuer Polizist und seine Mutter als ständig wegen ihres Mannes genervte Friseuse. Oma Ottis Friedhofsbekanntschaft und späterer Geliebter Karl Wegner, seines Zeichens Ex-Spartakuskämpfer und systemkritischer »ehrlicher Kommunist«, wird im Film zu einer zentralen Figur, spätestens nachdem eine Liaison mit Otti entstanden ist, und nachdem der Fisch-händler und Ex-Nazi am Platz, der ebenfalls ein Auge auf Otti geworfen hat, tot aufgefunden wird. Denn der der Tat beschuldigte Wegener sammelt Informationen über die gleichzeitige Studentenrevolte in West-Berlin, was ihn nicht nur an seine Geschichte anknüpfen lässt. Sein in der DDR illegitimes Wissen über die Ulbricht-Clique und den Stalin-Hitler-Pakt gibt er an Enkel Holger weiter.
Den Film allein als Sittenbild und Milieufilm zu sehen, wäre nicht angemessen. Die aufkeimende Liebe der beiden alten Menschen in der Welt der kleinen Leute in Berlin-Friedrichshain kann als zeitgeschichtli-che Parabel für ein nie vollständig angepasstes »DDR-Volk« gelesen werden, ohne dass dabei in plakative
Ostalgie oder Geckhaftigkeit verfallen wird. Am Beispiel der Geschehenisse im Mai 1968 und der neu aufgeflammenden Hoffnung trotz der sowjetischen Panzer in Prag, erscheint Wegners Verhaftung als letzte Rache Ulbrichts und des Stalinismus an den »ehrlichen Kommunisten«. Die große Leistung des mit viel Ironie und Lokalkolorit angereicherten Films besteht darin, den sowohl im Westen wie im Osten unterbrochenen Zeitbogen vom Anfang der Weimarer Republik 1918/1919 bis zum Untergang der DDR auf eine künstlerische und leise Art neu gespannt zu haben. » Gedenkbuch für deutsche Stalinopfer: Ermittlungen gegen russischen Historiker.
Der Lehrstuhlinhaber für russische Geschichte an der Pomor-Universität Archangelsk, Professor Michail Suprun, leitete in Kooperation mit dem russischen Innenministerium, dem Deutschen Roten Kreuz und dem »Historischen Forschungsverein der Deutschen aus Russland« ein Forschungsprojekt zur Geschichte stalinistischer Repressionen: Geplant war die Herausgabe eines »Gedenkbuchs« für deutschstämmige Opfer des Terrors und der Deportationen im Gebiet Archangelsk. Suprun erhielt offiziell Zugang zum regionalen ehemaligen KGB-Archiv und konnte biografische Daten über annähernd 5.000 deutschstämmige Stalin-opfer sammeln – bis er im September 2009 überraschend verhaftet wurde. Nachdem seine gesamten Ar-beitsmaterialien beschlagnahmt wurden, leitete man gegen ihn Ermittlungen nach § 137 des russischen Strafgesetzbuchs (»illegales Sammeln von Daten zum Privatleben von Personen«) ein – ein Paragraf, der im Falle eines Historikers zuvor noch nicht zur Anwendung gekommen war. Auch der Leiter des Archivs, Oberst Aleksandr Dudarev, wurde abgesetzt und mit dem Vorwurf der »Überschreitung der Dienstkompe-tenzen« konfrontiert. Die Beschuldigungen lösten eine Welle der Empörung aus: Deutsche Medien berich-teten, ein offener Brief, von ranghohen russischen und internationalen Historikern unterzeichnet, pranger-te die Verfolgung von Suprun und Dudarev an und solidarisierte sich mit ihnen. Im November 2009 wurde die Angelegenheit an die Ermittlungsbehörden in St. Petersburg weitergeleitet. Das Medienecho ebbte ab, doch die Ermittlungen liefen weiter: Suprun, der nach kurzer Zeit wieder freigelassen wurde und seine Forschungen an der Universität wieder aufnehmen konnte, beklagte sich in einem Interview im Feb-ruar 2010 über die Befragungen seitens der Ermittlungsbehörden in der Universität, die vergeblich versuch-ten, kompromittierende Daten über ihn einzuholen. Im November 2010 gab Supruns Anwalt bekannt, dass die Ermittlungsbehörden es auch nach 14 Monaten nicht zustandegebracht hätten, eine offizielle Anklageschrift vorzulegen. Allerdings wurden die Beschuldigungen nicht zurückgezogen – der Zeitraum der Ermittlungen wurde sogar auf April 2011 ausgedehnt. Nicht nur Aleksandr Dudarev, der sich Mitte November 2010 mit einer Stellungnahme meldete, sieht in den Vorgängen Züge politischer Verfolgung.

Nachruf:» Moshe Lewin (Vilnius 1921 – Paris 2010).
Moshe Lewin, der lange Jahre in Philadelphia unterrichtete, sich jedoch in Paris immer am wohlsten fühl-te, habe ich erstmals anlässlich des Wuppertaler Symposiums über Nikolaj Bucharin im Jahre 1988, das die neue Geschichtspolitik der Perestroika in den Westen brachte, persönlich kennengelernt.
Geht man von der Vätergeneration der Kommunismusforschung aus, gehörte Moshe Lewin, der Nestor der modernen Sozialgeschichte der Sowjetunion, zur Generation der Söhne. Der heutigen Studentengene-ration mag er als Veteran erscheinen, doch gerade sein letztes Werk, The Soviet Century (2005), ist eine moderne Verortung der Sowjetunion und des »Sovietismus« in der Geschichte des 20. Jahrhunderts, die er seit den 1960er Jahren in vielfältiger, bisweilen durchaus frappierender Weise entwickelt hatte.
Dies gelang ihm gerade dadurch, dass er sich nicht zu sehr auf Stalin als Person, sondern auf das Funk-tionieren und die inneren Bewegungsgesetze des sowjetischen Systems konzentrierte. Neben dem Verhältnis von Partei und Gesellschaft griff er Themen wie Bürokratie, Demografie, Ökonomie der Industrialisierung, Modernisierung (besonders nach Stalins Tod) und Kultur auf. Die Gründe für den Zusammenbruch der Sowjetunion, die er in mehreren grundsätzlichen Artikeln in Le Monde diplomatique dargelegt hatte, werden zusammengefasst und im Rahmen der moyenne durée erklärt. Was seine Stalinismusanalyse angeht, so ging es dem Autor allerdings auch um die inneren Beweggründe des Diktators, bzw. ihre Auswirkungen auf Entscheidungsabläufe und Machtstrukturen und ihre Konsequenzen für das administrative, soziale und kulturelle System, und die innere Dynamik der sowjetischen Gesellschaft.
Lewin lenkte immer wieder das Augenmerk – dabei gegen das Totalitarismusparadigma argumentierend – auf die grundlegende Bedeutung des Bruches zwischen der Lenin’schen Epoche des Bolschewismus unddem Stalinismus und Poststalinismus. Zur Definition des Systems (bis ca. 1956) zog er den Begriff des»bürokratischen Absolutismus« heran. Die Funktionsweise des Systems seit Mitte der Dreißigerjahre be-zeichnete er als inhärente »systemische Paranoia« und hob dabei die Kontinuität der beiden die sowjetischeGesellschaft dominierenden Imperative hervor, den industriellen »catch-up« des Westens und den Aufbaueines »mighty states« in direkter Kontinuität vom Zarismus zum Stalinismus. Das Totalitarismusparadigma sei dabei weder in der Lage, die multiplen sozialen Transformationen, noch umgekehrt die der Stalin’schenHerrschaft inhärente Unsicherheit, Schwäche und Bedrohung für die Existenz der Sowjetunion hinreichend zu erhellen. Auch zur Streitfrage der Rationalität des Terrors entwickelte Moshe Lewin ideologiekritischeKriterien: Bei aller Entschiedenheit und Brutalität habe es der Stalinismus selbst durch umfassende Repres-sion nicht vermocht, die latente Unzufriedenheit und Kritik in der Gesellschaft zu beseitigen. Als zentralerWirkungsmechanismus erschien ihm hierbei die »Depolitisierung« der Kommunistischen Partei der So-wjetunion, die ihre Macht und Kontrolle zugunsten einer sich als beherrschende Macht konstituierenden,in Staat und Produktion verwurzelten Bürokratie vollzogen habe. Empirisch belegte er dies durch die Un-tersuchung der Wirtschaftsbürokraten und Administratoren der Organe der Planwirtschaft als Träger der(insgesamt gescheiterten) Modernisierung.
Robert Legvold schrieb über Moshe Lewins Werk in der Mai/Juni-Ausgabe 2005 der Zeitschrift Foreign Affairs: »Lewin asks a metahistorical question: What was the Soviet Union all about? The answer, he says, is in the essence of the system. With the benefit of hindsight and new archival sources, he strips the Stalin and subsequent Khrushchev-Brezhnev eras down to their defining nature. Our original lens, fashioned from
anticommunism and the misleading frame of totalitarianism, failed us by blurring the fundamental diffe-rence between the original Bolshevik order and the ›agrarian despotism‹ of Stalinism, and by distorting the dramatic change underway from below. In stressing (quite rightly) the capricious, paranoid, unconstrained tyranny of Stalin the man, that view underestimated both the system’s accomplishments and the paradoxes that transformed it into a debauched ›bureaucratic absolutism‹ existing only for its own sake. The Soviet Union ended as its Russian predecessor did, and for much the same reason.«
In einem seiner letzten veröffentlichten Artikel hat Moshe Lewin im Jahrbuch für Historische Kommu-nismusforschung das Verhältnis von personeller Herrschaft und Gesellschaft, von Ego und Politik im Stali-nismus, das er in The Soviet Century zugunsten der Systemanalyse nicht weiter ausgeführt hatte, in prä-gnanter Weise vertieft (siehe: Moshe Lewin: Ego and Politics in Stalin’s Autocracy. In: Jahrbuch für Historische Kommunismusforschung 2003, S. 29–50). Hier führte er den Nachweis darüber, dass Staat und Gesellschaft der unter dem Diktat personeller Herrschaft stehenden Sowjetunion stark von Stalins irrationalen Beweg-gründen und besonders seinem abartigen Kampf gegen die eigene Vergangenheit gepägt waren. Die Pro-jektion intrasubjektiver Verwerfungen könne jedoch – wie er immer wieder darlegte – die Geschichte der Sowjetunion in toto nicht entschlüsseln. Eines der bleibenden Verdienste Moshe Lewins liegt gerade darin, beide Pole in einem Bogen überspannt und starke Motivationen für die weitere Forschungsarbeit geliefert zu haben.
Kurz vor der Publikation seines Artikels im Jahrbuch trafen wir, meine Freundin und ich, Moshe Lewin zum letzten Mal. Auf der Autofahrt quer durch Paris zum gemeinsamen Diner summte der Fröhlichkeit und Optimismus ausstrahlende Global Villager augenzwinkernd den im Radio abgespielten Mark-Knopf-ler-Song »Sailing to Philadephia« mit ... es war ein unvergesslicher Abend!
