Second robbery in Kihikihi Detectives working on the as yet unsolved aggravated robbery of Kihikihi Post Shop last week now have another case after Kihikihi’s Affordable Custom Cycles was robbed on Tuesday. That offence took place at about 10.20am when a group of up to seven men entered the shop and took away four motorcycles, one estimated to be valued at $60,000, plus a quantity of clothing. Firearms were believed to have been used in the robbery and the offenders fled north in a four- wheel-drive vehicle towing a trailer. Police are interested in any sightings of vehicles believed to be linked to the robbery in or around Kihikihi or Te Awamutu from about 10am Tuesday. Heroine’s welcome at Pekerau School for BMX ‘princess’ Rebecca Petch received a welcome befitting her newfound status as one of the world’s top BMX riders when she returned to Pekerau Primary School yesterday. The 11-year-old was back at school, having only arrived back in the country in the early hours of yester- day morning. She had collected the sil- ver medal in the 11 year girls’ 20-inch bike class at the BMX World Championship in Adelaide. She also stepped up a class to claim bronze in the under- 12 year girls’ Cruiser final. Rebecca was ‘blown away’ by the surprise welcome ceremony awaiting her at Pekerau School. She and her parents, Barry and Sonya, were escorted into a packed hall by Rebecca’s teacher, Nicky Vincent through a guard of honour formed by fellow pupils. The gathering sang the National Anthem, a haka was performed on stage and the school song sung. Pupils and teachers released streamers, while some held up placards with messages of congratu- lations recognising their ‘World number 2’. Principal John Cubitt said it was the proudest moment in his 10 years at Pekerau. ‘‘We’ve got a great model in the school now. Rebecca has shown if you ‘put in the hard yards’ what can be achieved.’’

Time for ‘rating’ performanceI always wonder how our

rates inflate, yet our wagesdon’t seem to keep with theinflation trend?

Thanks WDC for not beinglenient during my ‘trip of alifetime I had saved for years’when I drove the USA for threemonths.

Even though I was not, noranyone else, living in my housefor that three months (waterturned off, not one rubbishcollection, walk in a park/foot-path wear and tear or even a slypoop) I was still on full ratecharge. I did ask for a rebate andwas turned down flat.

Now can I say thanks to WDCfor the amazing street surfaceconditions we have on so manyof our streets (which I’d behappy to name, but the editortells me I haven’t got space).

Thanks WDC for the level

footpath on Cambridge Road(left side from the scenic oldmill site towards Timmos), whata score we got. I have seen a fewelderly bellied out winching offtrees with their mobilityscooters and helping up fallengoats that strayed off the pathedge.

I did like the money wellspent during the recycle binsdelivery years ago — a mopedwith a specially built trailer andWDC paid riders to help adver-tising recycle bins. I wonder ifTe Awamutu people are not thatstupid that when a plastic binwith all the needed writtencontent of ‘how to use it’ arriveson ya lawn, we can’t figure outhow to use it.

I won’t even start with the$250,000 Walk of Fame byIngham Honda or the TreatmentPlant and WDC’s decisions to

spend 60k on a cattle underpassthat would have flooded unlessconstant pumping when a cattlestop for 10k would have beensufficient. Two odd kms ofstream bank was to be fencedfor riparian, manager andowner asked it just to be simple4 hot wire, as the 7 wire post andbatten during flood would act asa huge dam when jammed full ofdebris, whereas 4 wire, 8 metrepost gap would never dam up.

About 35k of flora wasplanted in riparian area with-out any upkeep, only a quartersurvives now due to overgrownweeds like convolvulussmothering the trees, 800m ofpower cables to a transformer atthe end of the ponds that hasnever been used, stainless steelaerators in the ponds that blowaround idly, only attached bythe power cables. Or even the

oversights in expensive valvespurchased for the job, thenthrown in the long grass at theback of the ponds. But I am surethey must have been used forsomething now?

Now hey, I do enjoy LakeNgaroto walk, although theclone cutting Manuka treesused have taken a hiding fromboring insects. Also I have noissues with my rates spent onMaungatautari EcologicalIsland/mountain and otherventures WDC sponsor.

I realise my 15 years as ahouse owner and my roundfigure of $15,000 (first bought myhouse to now rates havedoubled) in rates is not going topay for the roses to be kept for ayear, but come on WDC couldyou please sharpen up?

Hospital help appreciatedThis time last year our family appealed

to the wider Te Awamutu community forassistance with fundraising for MakiunguHospital in Tanzania.

We were amazed and delighted with thecharitable response from the manyindividuals and community organisationssuch as the Rotary Club, Inner Wheel, andCatholic Women’s League, to name a few.Over $4600 was generously raised for thiswell deserving cause.

We have recently heard from Dr MariaBorda of the hospital, that all items havebeen purchased and installed. Included inthe purchases were an oxygen concen-trator for the Newborn Ward; two suctionmachines for the operating theatre; four

ward screens for patient examinationprivacy; and floor scales; all items deemedof high priority in the hospital.

Dr Borda expressed the relief anddelight she felt at having such reliable andfunctional equipment at the hospital, andpasses on her ‘‘sincere thanks, blessingsand prayers for all who helped make thepatients’ lives easier, through their gener-osity’’.

We would also like to convey our thanksto the community for your support inhelping the mothers and babies at thishospital, with which we have a strongpersonal connection. We know each andevery dollar was much appreciated.

Road safety in focusat Ohaupo School

C300709GJ01SENIOR pupils, from left: Jacone du Plessis, Tylisa Unsworth and Olivia Webber showing Room 5 thesafe way to cross West Road.

BY GRANT JOHNSTON

TC300709GJ03ROOM 5 teacher Mark Harrop watches as pupils learn aboutvisibility for backing drivers.

State Highway ‘front of mind’ for primary school

Ohaupo School’s road safetyday for pupils on Monday was anespecially relevant subject.

Road safety has always been abig issue for the school whichborders State Highway 3.

The highway separates theschool from many of its pupils’homes — and while a road under-pass (built in the early 1990sfollowing a child pedestrian fatal-ity) safely conveys young pedes-trians across to the other side, they still face traffic issues cross-ing West Road and travellingalongside the highway on the wayto their homes.

Some children live far enoughfrom school to catch the bus, while a number of others arenaturally dropped off and col-lected by parents.

But this also presents safetyissues, with vehiclesmanoeuvring in the off roadparking and access ways.

Monday’s road safety moduleswere based on discovery learning, with senior students planningand leading the modules for otherpupils, with assistance fromteachers where required.

They involved safe road cross-ing practices, being aware of

visibility for drivers (particularlywhen backing), bikes and vehiclesetc.

The exercise focussed thewhole school community on roadsafety issues — one of the out-comes (suggested by seniorpupils) will be a beautification of

the much used concrete tunnelunder the highway, making it lessforeboding for the younger chil-dren.

The configuration of barrierswhere the path intersects withWest Road is also likely to beupgraded.

Dual world BMX medallist

TC300709CT06MOMENT TO CHERISH: Rebecca Petch, with her bike and trophies, back at Pekerau School with herproud teacher Nicky Vincent and classmates.

Pekerau Primary ‘princess’Rebecca Petch won her silvermedal the hard way at the WorldBMX Championships in Adelaide— coming through the toughestqualifying mottos imaginable inher age group.

The New Zealander was drawnin the same three 11 year girls’ 20inch bike class mottos as last year’sWorld No.2 from Netherlands, theAustralian No. 1 rider and a hotshot from Chile.

But reputations meant little toRebecca.

She settled any nerves by des-troying the field winning the firstheat by two bike lengths.

A third behind the Netherlandsand Chile riders in heat two wasfollowed by another emphatic winby Rebecca in heat three.

The top 16 riders then rode off intwo gates of eight in the semi-finals.

Rebecca notched up her thirdwin in four races, taking out hersemi-final from the NetherlandsWorld No. 2, with Aucklander ZoeFleming finishing third — both theKiwis making the eight to contestthe final race.

The difference between gold andsilver came down to the first jump, which at 8.5 metres was unchartedterritory for Rebecca, but whichthe European riders are familiarwith.

The Netherlands team-mate ofthe World No. 2 established anearly lead which the Kiwi verynearly chased down, at the sametime fending off the challenge ofthe third placed American rider.

The Pekerau Primary studentsays she will never forget standingon the victory podium with hersilver medal around her neck ather first Worlds.

Three days later she was

pinching herself again standing onthe podium a second time, sportinga bronze medal from finishingthird in the 12 and under girls’cruiser class. The 11-year-old wasonly upstaged by two 12-year-oldAustralians in a field of 32.

On her return home, Rebeccawas quick to acknowledge the roleher Te Awamutu coaches, MalcolmMcOnie and Dona Hobbs hadplayed in her stunning success.

‘‘Malcolm has coached me sinceI was three,’’ she says.

‘‘Rhonda (James), the coach atCambridge, and the Cambridgeclub in general also helped meheaps when I trained over there onTuesday and Thursday afterschool.’’

The dual world medallist alsoacknowledged the sponsorship shehad received from Te Awamutu’sCornerstone Trust, Magills Whole-sale Meats and Electrics Ltd.

Easy Mind is a successful home-based childcare service for 0-5 year olds, founded seven years ago by early childhood teacher Clare Grace. Seven years have gone by

quickly for Easy Mind as they have responded to the pressing demand for accessible, quality childcare throughout New Zealand, continuing with the recent expansion to Te Awamutu.

Easy Mind is childcare that has the best of both worlds, combining the educational aspects of a centre and the love and attention of the home. In Easy Mind, children are cared for by a trained educator in groups of up to four and given ample opportunity to learn through play, interaction and experience. Educators are encouraged to take children to various educational programmes, events and social opportunities in their communities – all at no extra cost to the parent.

The relationships that are built with children, families and educators, Easy Mind believes, is key to their style of warm, nurturing childcare. Emphasis is placed on creating a programme where children have close, personal relationships with their educator, all the while engaged in active learning.

Council roading managerexplains seal problems

A mixture of warmer wetweather and then frosts has con-tributed to the sealing chip‘losses’ experienced in parts ofWaipa District.

Paul Chin, Council’s roadingservice delivery manager saysthat the combination of bothdrops in temperature and excessmoisture reduces the ability of thestone chips to ‘stick’ to the bitu-men surface.

‘‘It’s a fine line, the bitumenspray application cannot be too

thick, because then it bleeds inthe summer and you get the stickytar-like residue.

‘‘But we know that there aresome areas that are causing prob-lems, especially on the high levelbridge in Cambridge and somestreets in Te Awamutu, and we’dlike to apologise to residents forthat.’’

Maintenance for sealingcontracts cover a 12 month pro-gramme which is industry stand-ard in New Zealand, and remedial

works are included in this.‘‘We are disappointed, and

apologise for the nuisance,’’ MrChin says.

‘‘We’d like to reassure peoplethat the problem will be fixed assoon as weather conditions allow. Our engineers are workingclosely with the contractor toensure that problem areas arewell signposted and loose chipswept up, until remedial workscan be done in October whensealing conditions are optimal.’’

Grey Power’sguest speakerworth hearing

Guest speaker at GreyPower’s July meeting was Reg-istered Hearing Nurse, GinnyOpie, from Ear Health Profes-sional Services.

She spoke about ear canalmicro-suction.

Grey Power publicity officer,Alistair Kerr says while thegeneral public probably knowslittle about the procedure, it is,in fact one which should con-cern many people.

The ear canal can easilybecome blocked with wax, skinand debris. While the immedi-ate effects may not always beobvious, such blockages canseriously affect one’s hearing. This can, to a certain extent, behelped by syringing the canalwith sterile water, but thisprocedure can present a slightrisk of damage.

Mrs Opie recommended earcanal micro-suction as being asafer and more effectivemethod.

The procedure involves firstchecking the ears with a power-ful microscope, then using amachine which provides agentle suction to remove anyobstruction. The procedure isdone at the Mahoe Allied HealthProfessionals building, 160Mahoe Street, takes about 15minutes and costs $45.

As part of Grey Power’s‘Sharing Memories’ pro-gramme, ex-Royal MarineBandsman Ron Powell gave anentertaining account of hismemories as member of a RoyalMarine Band involved in set-ting up the street-liningservicemen at the Queen’sCoronation.

TC300709SP09LOU Sherman prepares fireworks for a display at Kawhia.

Lou Sherman is a man of manyskills — a marine engineer, com-mercial diver, ambulance officer,Community Board chairperson, organiser and volunteer for manycommunity events in Kawhia.

Recently he explained theseroles to Te Awamutu Rotary Club.

Thirty years ago HamiltoniansLou and Heather Sherman fell inlove with Kawhia and moved there.

They see Kawhia and the sur-rounding district as ‘‘our beautiful, bountiful paradise’’.

Mr Sherman presented a stun-ning slide show of bush, caves, streams, waterfalls and cliffprofiles that reveal ancient history.

The local waters provide oppor-tunities for kayaking, trout fishing, rock climbing and soaking in hotpools.

In the kowhai season admiredtwenty or more tui rise from asingle tree with trilling sound.

He explained that there are aseries of long weekends organisedto showcase these features ofKawhia to visitors.

‘‘Everyone in the communitydoes their bit to help. One of thebiggest events is the Kai Fest, where visitors get a chance to trythe ‘interesting’ food on offer.

‘‘Planning is underway for thenext one on February 6, 2010 (Wai-tangi Weekend) to bring familiestogether in harmony with food, music and entertainment.

‘‘The event is alcohol andsmokefree.’’

He says this has proven to be agreat initiative to attract people toKawhia and create employment forresidents on the day.

The Lonely Planet classifies theKai Fest in the top ten Maorifestivals to attend.

Next year the whale boat regattaday on January 1 is celebrating 100years of racing and fun.

Other weekend festivals thathave become memorable inKawhia are ‘Spring Fling’ art,

fishing competitions, fireworksdisplays and waka day.

A music festival weekend isheld at Oparau Hall in November.

One of Mr Shermans’s majorvoluntary projects is the NewYear’s Eve fireworks display froma barge in the Kawhia Harbour.

He showed Rotary members andguests samples of the fireworksthat are carefully sorted andsequenced into combinations toproduce a magnificent, colourfuldisplay.

Mr Sherman acknowledges thegenerosity of the businesses andbach owners in Kawhia who sup-port the $5,000 needed to purchasethe fireworks.

A November 5 Guy Fawkesdisplay for the children will be heldthis year at the Kawhia Domainwith money raised by the commun-

ity co-ordinated by Rona Parkes.Another of Mr Sherman’s many

talents is being a qualifiedabseiling instructor.

He also leads young people inteam building exercises and iscurrently working with a group ofsenior boys. He says he takes greatpleasure in seeing their faces whenthey “achieve.”

Mrs Sherman also fits commun-ity involvement into her busyschedule. She is a partner in the‘Arty Tarts Gallery’ open everyweekend and is currently helpingwith the planning of the ‘SpringFling’ Art Festival on September5-6 with many local artists exhibit-ing and competitions for children’sart.

The couple’s parting wordswere that they ‘really have a goodlife in Kawhia’.

He joined his Te Awa-mutu Sports’ club-mate,fellow prop Nathan White

Own cycle shop a dream come trueTC300709DT01

Te Awamutu’s newestbike shop owner CallumFawcett (right) is a manliving his dream.

Mountain to RoadCycles in Rogers Placehas been open just a fewweeks, but Mr Fawcettbrings a wealth of experi-ence and knowledge to hisbusiness.

The shop is in partner-ship with his wife Lisa —the couple having shiftedto Te Awamutu fromAuckland six years ago tolook for new opportun-ities.

Mr Fawcett says heburnt himself out work-ing for other people, butnow he is ready to put allhis energies and passioninto his own business.

He started right fromschool as an apprentice inthe bike industry, train-ing as a bike mechanicservicing Iron Man bikes.

It is a backgroundwhich has served himwell.

Mr Fawcett says helearnt first hand aboutthe importance of qualityparts and precision work-manship in the gruellingworld of competitive IronMan.

Staying with theindustry, Mr Fawcett hada stint in sales for acouple of large franchisebike stores.

At this time he alsolaunched Team Air-timewhich included five ofNew Zealand’s best BMXfreestyle and trials moun-tain bikers which lead to10 years in event manage-ment and promotion forvarious biking events.

These included a num-ber of iconic mountainbiking events utilisingtracks he fought long andhard against councilbureaucracies to form.

Mountain to RoadCycles brings all thesefacets to Te Awamutu.

Mr Fawcett says hisaim is to help people getinto whichever cyclingsport they want by pro-fessionally fitting them tothe right sized bike, withthe right equipment totheir budget.

He stocks the bestquality brands such asTrek, Gary Fisher and GTBicycles from the UnitedStates and for seriousroad riders ItalianColnago Bikes — plus

quality parts and acces-sories like Mavic Wheels,Avid and Sram compon-ents for all types of bikes.

He says most of thesequality parts have a threeto five year manufac-turer’s warranty — but heis so confident he alsoadds his own personalguarantee to anything herepairs or sells.

Mr Fawcett doesn’tjust rely on his past train-ing either — recentlycompleting the 2010Shimano MechanicsCourse.

A specialty is handbuilding race wheels forBMX, road and mountainbike racing using onlystainless Wheelsmithspokes.

And its not just aboutrepairs and sales — MrFawcett is running a win-ter training course underthe CycleOps brand inconjunction with ZeroLimits Gym, a trainingsystem to prepare peoplefor events such as theforthcoming Great TeamsLake Taupo Challenge.

Future plans includeputting his events andpromotional skills to usein the region and startworking with interestedparties to organise eventsfor Te Awamutu.

For more informationabout Mountain to RoadCycles contact MrFawcett on 870 6183 orvisit Shop 4, 42 RogersPlace.

Old Boys third in leagueGrainger’s men fashioning enviable record

TC300709CT04PLAYER OF DAY Jordan Ball chests a ball down in a recent gamefor Te Awamutu’s Federation Cup team at Te Awamutu Stadium.

Te Awamutu Old Boys postedtheir sixth straight win downingCambridge 4-2 in Waikato Group Csoccer competition.

In doing so, Te Awamutu’s 3rdXI moved to third place in theleague, overtaking Cambridge.

Manager Jimmy Grainger onceagain had a strong side to pickfrom.

Player of the day Dave Irelandopened the scoring after collectinga through ball from midfield.

Cambridge rallied, equalising10 minutes later.

At 1-1 Te Awamutu went look-ing for a second goal before thebreak.

Some quality midfield servicegave Lee Mallett an opportunity tochip the opposition keeper and hemade no mistake scoring.

Unfortunately for Cambridge, they lost a key player throughinjury in a collision with his owngoalkeeper trying to prevent thegoal.

Te Awamutu went ahead 3-1with a goal from a corner after asustained second half period onattack. Captain Dave Shute wasever present in the penalty box toassist Tim Ball in getting thedecisive touch.

Cambridge fought back in thefinal quarter, scoring from a pen-alty.

Te Awamutu finished stronglywith Shute in the right place at theright time to collect the ball andslot it home at the near post.

In Waikato Bay of Plenty Fed-eration League, Te Awamutu wereunable to recapture their winningform of a fortnight ago going down3-0 to Otumoetai.

The Cape Physio sponsoredvisitors started positively in Tau-ranga, creating a number of attack-ing chances in the opening 20minutes.

Otumoetai took control there-after, scoring two goals beforehalftime.

Ken Miezenbeek reports that TeAwamutu looked lethargic andtook wrong options as the gamewore on.

They missed two clear cut scor-ing chances in the second half, both created by James Maxwellslicing through the defence. Thekeeper came out and Maxwell shotpast the post each time.

Otumoetai sealed their victory

with a third goal midway throughthe second half when their strikerbeat the off-side trap.

Adam Blake and Jordan Balltried valiantly to get Te Awamutuon the scoreboard in the final 10minutes but were denied by no-nonsense defending.

Ball was clearly his team’s bestplayer on the day.

Hawks on fire in semisTaniwharau in tatters after heavy loss

CFPFIREHAWKS play-maker Isaac Howell, scorer oftwo tries against Taniwharau.

Te Awamutu SportsFirehawks scored anemphatic 38-6 win overpreviously unbeatenTaniwharau in Waikatopremier reserve rugbyleague major semi-final.

More importantly, theCivic Video sponsoredFirehawks booked a berthin the grand final — forthe second time in threeyears — and gained ahuge psychological edgeover Taniwharau the 2008defending champions.

The Kane Rangitongacoached Firehawks willnow await the outcomebetween Taniwharau andRangariri, who play thisweek to decide the otherfinalist.

Taniwharau began thegame attacking relent-lessly at Davies Park,Huntly only to be held upshort of the line or forcedinto an error by a commit-ted Firehawks’ defence.

It was 10 minutesbefore the Firehawkswere able to work them-selves into the opposition20 metre where RaySpooner darted fromdummy half to score forfullback Kevin McCallumto convert.

The second try camefrom a spilled ball, in atackle, by Taniwharauwhile attacking theFirehawks’ goal line.Standoff Warwick Ratimagathered in the loose balland off-loaded to IsaacHowell, who outsprintedthe defence in a 95 metredash to score under theposts for an easy conver-

sion.The visitors third first

half try resulted from aslick backline move thatcreated an overlap forHowell to sprint 50 metresalong the left hand

touchline, drawing thelast defender, before pass-ing to McCallum in sup-port to score.

The Firehawks led 16-0at the break.

Taniwharau opened

the second half scoringwith their dummy halfdiving over from a ‘playthe ball’ close to the tryline.

The Firehawks hitback almost immediatelywhen captain QuintenHunapo received the ball20 metres out, beat thefirst defender and carriedthe second and thirddefenders over the line toscore under the posts.

A raid from deepinside their own half sawFirehawks’ Colby Rehuastep inside one player, break the tackle ofanother and dummy adefender before handingthe ball to Howell to scorein the corner for hissecond of the day.

Rehua was soonjoining the scoring actionwith his trademark‘dummy’ pass.

The final try camefrom another Tani-wharau dropped ballresulting in winger andFirehawks’ leading tryscorer Mark Sugarsprinting 40 metresunopposed to score underthe posts.

The loyal Te Awamutusupporters left Huntlyoptimistic that their teamcan repeat the feat of 2007by winning the grandfinal in a fortnight.

Should they win thegrand final, the Te Awa-mutu Sports Firehawkswill gain automatic entryinto the premier competi-tion in 2010 — a goal of theclub’s since its inceptionin 2004.

Bride Flight

FugitivePieces

Jefferson Steel is anageing Hollywood actionhero. He’s vain, insecureand out of work.

Under pressure fromhis client, Jefferson’sincompetent LA agent isforced to go through histrash, in a final attempt

to find Jefferson work, and stumbles upon theperfect role: a prestigerun playing King Lear atStratford-upon- Avon.

Jefferson believes hehas landed the role of alifetime; arriving in theUK to discover he isbooked to tread theboards with an amateurdramatic society in thesleepy English villageStratford St John,

Suffolk.A clash of cultures

with comiccomplications ensues inthis funny andultimately moving com-edy.

Bride Flight is thestory of three womenwho were on the KLMaircraft that won theLast Great Air Race in1953, from London toChristchurch, whichcarried 26 young Dutchbrides-to-be on their wayto join their fiancesalready settled in NewZealand.

Marjorie, Ada andEsther meet each otheron the immigrationflight.

The three womeninstantly forge a fastfriendship, thanks in no

small part to theirshared amorousadvances from Frank, acowboy-cum-adventurerwho is on his way to NewZealand to be a sharefarmer.

Upon arrival, Frankand Ada fall deeply inlove, but Ada’s marriageto a devout Christianwho lives with her in aconverted World War IIbunker, severelycomplicates this.

Meanwhile, Estherand Marjorie encountertheir own problems; onewinds up pregnant by anunknown progenitor, while the other discoversher own infertility.

Fragments of past andpresent create a haunt-ing kaleidoscope ofwords and emotions.

Lyrical and complex,Jeremy Podeswa’s adap-tation of Anne Michael’sbeloved novel builds intoa breathtaking mosaic asfragments of the past andpresent reveal the innerdepths of a writer whocan’t let go of the ghoststhat haunt him.

Athos is directing anarchaeological dig inNazi-occupied Polandwhen he discovers a littleboy hiding. Afterwitnessing the massacreof members of his family,seven-year-old Jakobdoes not know the fate ofhis beloved sister Bella— a mystery that willhaunt him for the rest ofhis life. As Jakob growsinto a man, he becomesprogressively more con-sumed by his family’stragedy and his longingfor Bella, colouring hisrelationships.

A truly moving andunforgettable story.
