Manuscript Preparationw w w. u m i . c o m / g o / p r e p a r e m a n u s c r i p t

Copyrighting Your Manuscript. C o p y r i g h tprivileges reside with you immediately uponcreation of your work. Registration of yourcopyright establishes a public record of yourdissertation and confers additional legal rights, enabling you to file infringement suits and seekstatutory damages and attorneys’ fees. If you wishto register your copyright but prefer not tohandle the details yourself, UMI will act as youragent with the Library of Congress CopyrightOffice. This includes preparation of theapplication (in your name) plus submission ofthe application fee and required depositcopy(ies) of your work. You will receive yourcertificate of copyright registration from theCopyright Office approximately six to eight weeksafter UMI receives your manuscript.

Preparing Your Manuscript for Publication. w w w. u m i . c o m / g o / p r e p a r e m a n u s c r i p t

UMI accepts dissertations and master’s theses by graduates of accredited, degree-grantinginstitutions. Full texts in both paper and digitalformats are distributed exactly as they aresubmitted. They are neither edited, typeset, norre-typed. When your dissertation is ready forpublication, you will be asked to submit a typed

or digital copy of the manuscript to youru n i v e r s i t y, along with an abstract of the contents.Your university will then forward the material to UMI. Please note: Some universities have adifferent procedure, so check with your graduateschool first.

Your Manuscript Ti t l e. Use word substitutesfor formulas, symbols, superscripts, Greekletters, or other non-alphabetical symbols in the title. If your title contains symbols or non-Roman letters, please suggest appropriatetranslations using Roman letters and providethem as keywords (see next section).

UMI editors may make some changes inpunctuation or spelling of your title to maintainconsistency in the database. For example, we mayadd a colon to delineate a subtitle. No changesare ever made to the manuscript itself, so yourtitle page will remain as we received it.

Added Keyword s. UMI editors select words andphrases to index your dissertation in our printproducts, and provide added topical entries forresearchers. You will be asked to suggest addedkeywords on the agreement form.

Some of these added keywords are taken into the electronic products and appear inparentheses at the end of the dissertation title.Authors sometimes find those added keywordsconfusing and believe UMI has changed theirtitle. However, these keywords are not part ofthe title and will not appear on copies or inprint. They appear only in the electronicproducts to enhance retrieval.

Selecting a Subject Category for Yo u rM a n u s c r i p t. The UMI dissertation database isarranged by subject categories. Your abstract willappear in Dissertation Abstracts Internationalunder one category only. In the Agreement Form(see insert) you will be asked to choose thecategory that most nearly describes the generalcontent of the dissertation. You may selectadditional categories to enhance electronicretrieval. Your guide will be the “SubjectCategories” listing, which also appears in theinsert (page A3). For assistance with keyword or subject field choice, see page 4.

Preparing Your Abstract. Your abstract (asuccinct description of your work) is limited to350 words. We’ll shorten it if we must, but wefeel you’re best qualified to edit it, so pleased o n ’t exceed the limit.

Please follow these guidelines:

• Include pertinent place names, names ofpersons (in full), and other proper nouns. These are useful in automated retrieval.

• Display symbols, as well as foreign words andphrases, clearly and accurately. Include translit-erations for characters other than Roman andGreek letters and Arabic numerals. Includeaccents and diacritical marks.

• Do not include graphs, charts, tables, orillustrations in your abstract.

• If the original abstract is not in English and anEnglish translation has been made, please sendboth the English and the foreign languagea b s t r a c t s .

Using Materials Copyrighted by Others. As the author of the manuscript, you will beasked to certify that any previously copyrightedmaterial used in your work, beyond “fair use,” is with the written permission of the copyrighto w n e r. Please refer to Copyright Law &Graduate Research: New Media, New Rightsand Your New Dissertation by Dr. KennethCrews. This booklet is available at no chargefrom UMI. Ask your graduate school office torequest paper copies or visit our website at w w w. u m i . c o m / g o / c o p y r i g h t l a w for the latestdigital version.

By signing the Agreement Form you agree to theabove terms. You must also attach copies ofpermission letters from copyright owners to theAgreement Form. These letters must state that thecopyright owner is aware that UMI may supplysingle copies on demand. If permissions are notsupplied, copyrighted materials will not ber e p r o d u c e d .

Preparing the Paper Text of Yo u rM a n u s c r i p t.

• Your graduate school’s requirements alwayssupersede UMI’s requirements.

• Type or print your manuscript single-sided onhigh-quality white paper, 8 1/2" x 11" or A4 insize. Please do not use erasable papers.

• All textual materials should be double-spaced.Long quotations and footnotes may be single-s p a c e d .

• Because the manuscript will be reduced insize, we recommend that you select font size 12and no smaller than 10 in Arial, Helvetica, orCentury Gothic fonts.

• To insure the best quality, the print should beletter quality with dark black characters that areconsistently clear and dense.

P U B L I S H I N G Y O U R D I S S E R T A T I O N

• Pages with small and indistinct print and/orvery narrow margins may be illegible inm i c r o f o r m .

• We recommend a minimum 1" margin on allfour sides of the page.

• Photocopies made from poor-quality originalscannot be properly reproduced. These poor-quality copies tend to occur most frequently in manuscript appendices.

• Our most common problem is missing pages. To avoid delays in publication, please makecertain that the copy you submit includes all the pages of your manuscript.

Charts, Graphs, Tables, Photographs, and Oversize Maps. Illustrative materialdrawn or computer-generated in black willreproduce satisfactorily, while colors will appear as slightly varying shades of gray.

Please keep in mind:

• Lines on a graph should be identified by labels or symbols rather than colors.

• Shaded areas – such as countries on a map – will have better contrast if cross-hatching isused instead of color.

• Photographs should be professional-qualityblack and white.

• Color photographs should be reprinted inblack and white by a photo lab. Mostphotographs will reproduce acceptably onpositive microform but will lack clarity on paper copies.

• Charts, graphs, and maps that are larger thanthe standard 8 1/2" x 11" page size may be usedin your manuscript. These should be carefullyfolded into the manuscript or rolled and placedin a mailing tube.
