On August 3, 2016, representatives from the Puerto Rico Clinical and Translational Research Consortium(PRCTRC) met with the directors and representatives of Sor Isolina Ferre Center from the communities ofCaimitoandGuayama.

Gonzalez, MS, MT.; and Ms. Denisse Melecio Alamo,MBA attended representing the PRCTRC UPR-Medical SciencesCampus. Also present were the Ms. Zahiraliz Reyes, MS and Ms.IvonneAmillrepresentingthePRCTRCfromUniversidadCentraldelCaribe.The purpose of this first meeting was to identify areas in which to establish partnerships inareas of counseling and educatingpeople about what genomicresearch is and how it can be of
benefit to the community represented by theSor Isolina FerreCenters. The National Institute ofHealth and Health Disparities in Minority (NIMHD)located in Bethesda, MD supports thedevelopment of biomedical and medical researchon medical conditions that affectethnic and racialminorities, and under-representedgroups within thepopulation of the United States to help improvetheir health and quality of life. TheScientificWritingUnit,incollaborationwiththeProfessional Development Core, hosted the firstpart of a seminar series entitled Roadmap tosubmitting a research proposal for the NIH. Thepurpose of these seminars are to help younginvestigators to develop proposals, with anemphasis on those investigators that will becompeting for the 2017 PRCTRC Pilot Projects.During the first seminar, researchers from PonceSchoolofMedicine,UniversidadCentraldelCaribe,

and the UPR-Medical Sciences Campus learnedabout how to organize research ideas, developspecific aims, and draft letters of intent (LOI). Dr.DeanaHallman began the seminar discussing howto go from basic questions to drafting a researchproposal. Subsequently, Dr. María Gonzalez-Ponsshowedparticipantshowtowriteastrongspecificaimssection.Finally,Dr.SheilaWarddiscussedhowtowriteandwhattoincludeinaLOI.Thenextpartsof the serieswill be offered during themonths ofOctoberandNovember.

RESEARCH SCOPE Research proposals should emphasize
developing clinical and translational research in
one of the four areas of study of health disparities:
We will fund at least one pilot project that would use one of the following approaches or address one of the following specific areas of disparities research: (1) studies using short interventions to obtain preliminary data aimed at future larger interventions to decrease an established health disparity; (2) precision medicine as it pertains to a health disparity; and/or (3) disparities in the provision of Health Care.
ELIGIBILITY ü The PI of the pilot project must be an early career
stage investigator or a mid-careerstage investigator proposing a new area ofresearch.

Proposals must have a translational emphasis.All proposals must have collaborationsbetween clinical and basic or social scientistsaccording to the type of award solicited. One ofthe PIs must have collaborations among thePRCTRC partners.
ü All PIs must identify and work with a mentor.

On October 17, 2016, the PRCTRC’s Computer Cluster willreopen.Anumberofimprovementshavebeenmadetothearea including replacing all computer systems with new,state-of-the-art computers. Also, the room has been re-modeled (new paint, additional work space) so that thenumber of computers could be increased from fourcomputerstofive!BecausemanyofourPRCTRC-supportedinvestigators dealwith personal (also known as protected)healthinformation(PHI),wehaveimplementednewpolicies

andprocedures thatwill help investigatorsmaintain the security and safety of PHI.ThesenewpolicieswillalsohelpsecurethePRCTRC servers and data from otherpossible hacks into our computer system.Averyspecial“ThankYou”toYolandaToro,JoséMaldonado,andZabdyTortorella,staffmembers of the Biomedical InformaticsCore for their hard work and diligence,makingthisnewComputerClusterarealityfor all of the PRCTRC supportedresearchers.

ThePRCTRCwelcomesCarola!ShejoinedtheTechnologiesand Resources for Core Laboratories (TRCL) in the UPR-MedicalSciencesCampusearlierthisyear.
Her expertise includes: Process samples for referencelaboratory specialized in cellular and molecular biologyservicing hospitals, physicians and clinical laboratoriesthroughout Puerto Rico. Performpatient specimen testingand ensure sample suitability utilizing sophisticated realtime PCR technology to detect genetic material andquantify viruses such as HIV, HCV and HBV. Perform HIVgenotype, HIV phenotype for drug resistance and HCVgenotypeforvirusclassification.
