Getting Around

• Trolleys: The Old San Juan Trolley Tours is free of charge and is a great way to move around the Old City.

• Car Rental: Renting a car is fairly easy and the most convenient way to explore Puerto Rico’s unlimited beauty. Most of the well-known car rental companies can be found at the Luis Muñoz Marín Airport and in and around the larger cities. Local companies offer competitive prices and great service.

• AMA: The Metropolitan Bus Authority, or AMA, is Puerto Rico’s public bus transportation system. If clients are not in a hurry, the AMA is a cheap way to get around the Metro Area. Each ride costs 75 cents for adults, 60 cents for students. Bus routes are identified with a letter followed by a number and most service routes stop at 10:00pm.

• Ferries: There are two ferry stations in Puerto Rico, the Acuaexpreso in Old San Juan and the Fajardo Station. Acuaexpreso is located at Pier 2 and for 50 cents per person (25 cents for children), it takes travelers to Cataño, a short taxicab ride from the Bacardi Distillery and its tours. The Fajardo Station is used for travel between the mainland and the islands of Culebra and Vieques. One-way tickets are $2 for Vieques, $2.25 for Culebra for ages 12 to 59; $1 both islands for ages 3-11; $1 both islands, ages 60-74; both islands free for passengers 75 or older. Capacity is limited, as are the departure times.

• Tren Urbano: The Tren Urbano, or “urban train,” is an efficient way to move around certain parts of the Metro area or to just tour some of the urban areas. The Tren Urbano operates from 5:30am to 11:30pm daily and costs $1.50; 75 cents for students, the handicapped and those 60 years of age and older. It’s part of a public transportation system that works together with the public bus system and covers most of the Metro area.

• Taxi: Taxis are a good and fairly inexpensive way of getting around Puerto Rico. Clients can either wave one down on the street or call one by phone and they’ll take them anywhere in Puerto Rico. Some taxis have fixed rates and some are metered, it all depends on where you’re going.

Regions of Puerto Rico

East: Fantastic beaches, golf courses, nature reserves, impressive underwater reefs and small cays. The East is home to El Yunque, the only subtropical rainforest in the U.S. National Forest Service and noted as a Biosphere Reserve. Charming Inns, Exciting Resorts

Puerto Rico’s hotel industry is hopping with new properties suiting the needs of every customer (from modest to super luxurious) opening or being revitalized in every corner of the island. Puerto Rico expects to double its hotel rooms to more than 28,000 in the 10-year period between 2014 and 2024. Among the many new developments are five-star properties such as the Olive Hotel at Condado, Royal Isabela and Ritz Carlton Reserve.

What are the key ingredients for their dream vacation?

• Relaxing, romantic, secluded beach escape for two• Quality time to reconnect with their spouse and children• Plenty of day and night action with all the facilities and amenities• Close to shopping, restaurants, nightlife• Combination of fun in the sun with excursions, cultural activities• Pampering – luxurious accommodations, spa facilities• Getting in touch with nature; adventure activities• Learning experience – explore, learn about the people, the place, the culture• Scuba, water sports• Play in the Golf Capital of the Caribbean

The combinations are endless, and each is easily accommodated in Puerto Rico.

Location, Location, Location

Once you have established your clients’ wants and needs, you can match them with the perfect location. (Be sure to take advantage of the information found in this course, the Master’s Course and at SeePuertoRico.com to help you with this).

Length of stay

You can suggest a combination of stays in different areas that match these different interests. For example, suggest four days of action in and around San Juan to take in the sites, shopping and nightlife; three days on the islands of Vieques or Culebra to get away from it all, reconnect and enjoy pure relaxation. Or the reverse, the number of days in each would depend on the weight of the special interest. Perhaps the perfect match is a stay in a town center near historic and cultural sites, followed by time at a resort. Or, maybe a stay with a focus on nature/adventure activities, followed with time spent in a cultural center would work for them. And on, and on.

Indian Sites

Tibes Ceremonial Park (Ponce): The largest Taino ceremonial center in the West Indies, this 32-acre site was used more than a thousand years before the birth of Christ. The area is famous for its ceremonial bateyes (courts), one of which measures 118 feet long. Surrounding each court are tombstone-like rocks, displaying petroglyphs (ancient symbols etched by the Tainos). A reconstruction of a Taíno village helps visitors to understand their way of life. Guided tours in English and Spanish are available. Open Tuesday through Sunday, 9:00am to 3:30pm. Closed on Monday.

Caguana Ceremonial Park (Utuado): Near Utuado, in the center of the island, a two-hour drive west of San Juan, is Caguana Indian Ceremonial Park, believed to be among the most sacred Taíno Indian sites in the West Indies. A ceremonial ballgame was played here, and more than 30 courts where these games were played are on view at the site today. A small museum here contains Indian artifacts, archaeological exhibits and a botanical garden. Open 7 days, 8:00am to 4:20pm.

The Arecibo Observatory

The Arecibo Observatory houses the world’s largest single-dish radio telescope, spanning almost 20 acres. It’s the only radio telescope that can accurately predict when and where an asteroid might collide with Earth, and was responsible for the first asteroid images in history.

Historic Sites, Towns & Villages

Hacienda Buena Vista (Ponce): Hacienda Buena Vista, located in the hills seven miles north of Ponce, is a “working” coffee plantation, dating from 1833 that recaptures rural life in 19th century Puerto Rico. The original owners donated many of the furnishings, and the Conservation Trust has purchased other authentic pieces.

Porta Coeli Museum (San German): San Germán, founded in 1573, is one of the oldest towns on the island and is one of only two that are listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Here, your clients will find Porta Coeli Religious Art Museum, once a church (dating from 1609) and believed to be one of the oldest buildings of its kind on U.S. territory, and many other well-preserved historic homes; a coffee plantation, and the impressive San Germán de Auxerre Church.

Castillo San Felipe del Morro: This fort, constructed from 1539 to 1789, stands on a rocky promontory dominating the entrance to San Juan Bay. With some of the most dramatic

Page 19: Puerto Rico Travel Expert General Course

Puerto Rico Travel Expert Chapter Three - Puerto Rico for Families

Historic Sites, Town & Villages (cont.)views in the Caribbean, El Morro boasts an intriguing labyrinth of dungeons, barracks, vaults, lookouts, and ramps. The entrance ticket also includes admission to Fort San Cristóbal, a huge fortress, begun in 1634 and reengineered in the 1770s, connected to El Morro via two tunnels. The fort has a Discovery Center for kids. The Discovery Center is open Wednesday through Sunday 8:30am to 5:00pm.

Old San Juan: A stroll around Old San Juan, will appeal to clients of every age. The best way to get a sense of the district, a seven-square-block area of cobblestone streets, 17th-century churches, historic buildings, cafes, and boutiques, is by walking.

Island Getaways

Vieques - 25-minute flight from San Juan; 10-minute flight from Fajardo, or 75 min ferry ride from Fajardo which is an hour’s drive from San Juan

Vieques is a unique island where your clients can relax and enjoy aquatic sports from its secluded beaches or share the excitement of eco-adventures. They can swim, take a boat trip or a kayak through the spectacular bioluminescence found in Mosquito Bay; ride a bike through the back roads of the Vieques National Wildlife Refuge to view sea turtles, brown pelicans, the West Indian manatee, and other wildlife; learn about the sea creatures in the touch tanks at the conservation center, or visit Mirasol Fort.

Hiking

For the serious or leisure hiker, Puerto Rico’s renowned forests, the El Yunque Rain Forest and Guanica Dry Forest, offer marked trails and roads to explore a wide variety of plant and animal life. Enjoy the diverse hiking experiences of these forests. El Yunque has a lush green jungle-like atmosphere and cascading waterfalls, while Guanica Dry Forest has a desert like, yet colorful, expanse of land near one of the island’s most beautiful beaches.

Horseback Riding

Your clients can go horseback riding along a beautiful beach, follow a trail through a tropical rain forest, or amble through a spectacular plantation. Several ranches rent horses by the hour and offer guided tours and classes for beginners.

Fishing

Puerto Rico offers top class Deep Sea Fishing around the island. The ocean drops thousands of feet in a short run from the dock on most coasts. A whole array of offshore species can be caught year round, especially blue marlin, sailfish, dolphin fish, wahoo and tuna. Puerto Rico is one of the top 10 places for tarpon fishing.

Rigged fishing boats are available for charter in San Juan, Isla Verde, Humacao and Fajardo. Boats range in size from 28 to 61 feet. Smaller boats sized from 17 to 20 feet are available for harbor and lagoon fishing.

Golf

Puerto Rico has some of the finest golf courses in the Caribbean and Latin America, offering a wide variety of golfing experiences. There are many spectacular golf courses on the island, most of them championship caliber.

You don’t need to be a world champ to appreciate the beauty and variety of our courses. Golfers can choose from a wide range of breath-taking terrains showcasing natural wonders from mountain peaks to the sugar-white beaches and azure waters of the Atlantic. Most have been designed by golf luminaries such as Robert Trent Jones, Robert Trent Jones Jr., Rees Jones, Greg Norman, George and Tom Fazio, Jack Nicklaus, Arthur Hills, and Puerto Rico’s own Chi Chi Rodriguez. The courses are feats of landscape architecture that impress golfers and non-players alike.

Windsurfing, Sailing, Kayaking, Stand-Up Paddleboarding

For those looking to get close to the water, but not necessarily submerge in it, Puerto Rico offers many seafaring activities like windsurfing, sailing, kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding.

Surfing

World-class surfing can be enjoyed in nearly every part of the island, but particularly in Rincon and Isabela, Isabela was the site of the 2010 World Surfing Championships and both places are host to numerous other major competitions.

Scuba Diving/Snorkeling

Your dive clients can explore reefs that lie within a splash of their hotel room, or those that fringe remote islets far from shore.

They can start their scuba experience with an easy half-day resort course, or enjoy an advanced dive 100 feet below the surface. They will find beach dives, shallow dives, boat dives, wall and ledge dives, night dives, cave and wreck dives.

Pristine reefs, spectacular walls, intriguing caverns, and mangrove-topped cays define the tropical waters that surround Puerto Rico. They form the backdrop for dives that are as dazzling as any found in the Caribbean and as diverse as its marine life. Multitudes of fish coexist with endangered manatees and humpback whales. Corals abound, including species that are mere memories on other islands.

Since diving in Puerto Rico is one of the Caribbean’s best-kept secrets, many of its sites remain untouched. Every dive trip is still an adventure, every diver an explorer. Underwater visibility can exceed 100 feet, and land and water temperatures hover around 78 degrees Fahrenheit (26 degrees Centigrade) all year round.
