USS William H. Bates (SSN 680) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_William_H._Bates_(SSN-680)
As we reach the end of the year, there are a couple
of things to mention. We have shifted our monthly
meetings back to Saturday mornings for the winter
months. The third weekend of the month we will
meet at 1000. There is a possible change of location
for the February meeting. We have started making
plans for a meeting similar to the last two years,
with a breakfast. More information will be availa-
ble as the plans come together.
This time of year we need to encourage all regular
members to renew their dues. For those who might
be National Life members, it might be easy to slip
and forget to pay base dues. This is especially true
if you are a dual member and belong to more than
one base. Even though any National member is wel-
come to our meetings, there are some benefits that
we give to Bremerton Base members only. If you
are not sure whether you owe dues or not, contact
our Base Treasurer and we will get you the infor-
mation.
The E-Board has been discussing some different
ideas and projects, which we will be working on in
the future. We hold our E-Board meeting on the
first Saturday of the month, at 0900. Any member
that would like to attend the meeting is welcome to.
Even though the elected officers are the only ones
who vote at the meeting, all who
attend are able to give input.
It might seem early to bring this
up, but at the end of 2015 the
Bremerton Base will be having
elections for Base Officers. In ac-
cordance with our Base Bylaws, the current Com-
mander and Vice Commander will have to rotate out
of their current positions, as this will complete their
second term. I encourage all eligible members to
consider making themselves available to serve. Feel
free to contact the current officers and ask about the
jobs.
I would like to wish a safe and happy holiday for
all of you and your families. I wish
for you all the best in the New Year.
I look forward to serving the Base as
Commander throughout 2015.
Thank you for giving me this oppor-
tunity to serve the Base.

Hello fellow Submariners,
I hope this edition of the Puget Soundings
find you doing well. By the time you receive this we
will be well into the Thanksgiving and Christmas
holidays. We have had a very busy year, and I think
we can check the box as it being a successful year.
We have had an awesome response to many of the
events we partake in throughout the year, and I want
to sincerely thank all of our base members who take
the time to support our mission.
At this time, we are still looking for a
chairperson to manage the fireworks stand. This is a
very important fund raising event for our base. If
anyone is interested in helping in this effort, please
contact me or any of the other E-Board members. I
feel if no one steps up to be the chairperson, we will
as a base, continue this event. At this time, it is our
major fundraiser for our scholarship program and we
have no other option at this time. More to follow.
I am sure you have all received your 2015
Subvets calender. This is what I send my family
members for Christmas, small token, but something
they do not get to receive back in the Midwest. They
enjoy the photos and history of
the submarine force. I want to
thank all of those members who
sent back a donation for this en-
deavor. It is responses like this,
that make me proud to serve this
base, and be a part of “The Brother's of the Phin”.
I attended the 50th reunion in San Francisco
and I met many good people. I feel our U.S.S.V.I., is
headed in the right direction. We have some good
leadership and I think we will do well and continue
to be a successful Veterans organization.
Well that is all for now, I hope you all
have an awesome holiday season, and please be safe.
I look forward to seeing you all at future events. If
there is anything I can assist you with, please do not
hesitate to contact me. It is an honor to serve as your
Vice Commander.

RELEASE #10– 008 Feb. 01, 2010
Navy confirms sunken sub in Balabac Strait is USS Flier
From Commander, Submarine Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet Pub-
lic Affairs
(PEARL HARBOR, Hawaii) – Commander, Submarine
Forces Pacific Fleet (COMSUBPAC), Rear Adm. Douglas
McAneny announced today that a sunken vessel located in the
Balabac Strait area of the Philippines is in fact the World War
II submarine USS Flier (SS 250).
“I am honored to announce that, with video evidence
and information provided by a team from YAP Films and as-
sistance from the Naval History and Heritage Command, USS
Flier has been located,” said McAneny. “We hope this an-
nouncement will provide some closure to the families of the
78 crewmen lost when Flier struck a mine in 1944.”
USS Flier, a 1525-ton Gato class submarine built at
Groton, Connecticut, was commissioned in mid-October
1943. She departed from Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, for her first
war patrol in January 1944. While entering the harbor at Mid-
way Island during a storm, she went aground and was serious-
ly damaged.
The damaged submarine was towed back to Pearl Harbor and
finally reached the Mare Island Navy Yard, California, where
she was repaired. Flier made another start on her first war
patrol in May 1944, heading from Pearl Harbor to the waters
off Luzon. While en route on 4 June she attacked and sank the
transport Hakusan Maru. On June 13, she attacked a Japanese
convoy off Subic Bay, receiving a depth charging in return,
and on June 22-23, hit another convoy off Mindoro, apparent-
ly damaging one or more ships.
In early August 1944 Flier left Fremantle, Australia, for her
second war patrol. On 13 August, while transiting shallow
water to enter the South China Sea, she struck a mine and
quickly sank. Fourteen of 86 crewmen escaped, but only eight
survived the subsequent long swim to reach shore. After mak-
ing their way by raft to Palawan and being protected by local
people and a group of guerrillas, at the end of the month they
were evacuated by the submarine USS Redfin (SS-272).
The last surviving crew member of Flier, Ens. Al Jacobson,
never gave up the search for his lost shipmates. Sadly, Jacob-
son passed away in 2008, but his family was determined to
continue the search. The family provided notes and research
to the production company YAP Films, which investigates
nautical mysteries, and Jacobson’s son Steve and grandson
Nelson participated in the search.
“After my father retired in 1990, he became very active in the
quest to understand more of what happened,” said Steve Ja-
cobson. “He put together as much information as he could
from naval records of the investigation and put together charts
of where he believed Flier was. We provided YAP Films with
everything my father had collected.”
In the spring of 2009, with the aid of the Jacobson family, the
team from YAP Films located wreckage of a submarine in the
area that USS Flier was lost. Father and son divers Mike and
Warren Fletcher of the television show “Dive Detectives”
captured the first views of the sunken submarine in more than
64 years. YAP Films provided the Naval History and Herit-
age Command with footage taken in the Balabac Strait to aid
in the identification. [See USS Flier p. 7]

USS L. Mendel Rivers (SSN 686) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_L._Mendel_Rivers_(SSN-686)
USS Flier (SS 250) [From p. 6] "The Flier discovery presented the Dive Detectives
with one of our most challenging dives,” said Warren Fletch-
er. “At a depth of 330 feet there is little margin for error. As my
father and I descended into the dark blue water, the unmistakable
shape of a Gato-class submarine came into view. That moment
made all of the hard work and danger pale in comparison with the
feeling of pride it gave me to know that the Flier and her crew
will not be forgotten."
With the information provided by YAP Films, COMSUBPAC
and the Naval History and Heritage Command examined the evi-
dence and historical records and determined that the submarine
found at the reported position could only be USS Flier. No Japa-
nese or U.S. submarine other than Flier was ever reported lost in
the area, and the gun mount and radar antenna clearly identifiable
in the video matched historical photographs of USS Flier. Addi-
tional identifiable characteristics of the hull indicated that the
wreck is indeed a Gato-class submarine. These factors taken to-
gether led COMSUBPAC and the Naval History and Heritage
Center to conclude that the wreck found by YAP Films could
only be that of USS Flier.
"The Flier was found because all the right people came together
for all the right reasons,” said Mike Fletcher. “But mostly the
Flier was found because of the love a family has for their dad."
“It was a pretty emotional experience,” said Jacobson. “Although
I was really confident of the position, you still don’t know. Liter-
ally, it was exactly at the coordinates he said it would be. It is
tremendous closure and I wish that my dad could have experi-
enced this.”
Former Commander-in-Chief of the U.S. Pacific Fleet Admiral
Chester Nimitz once said, “When I assumed command of the
Pacific Fleet on 31 December 1941 our submarines were already
operating against the enemy, the only units of the Fleet that could
come to grips with the Japanese for months to come. It was to
the Submarine Force that I looked to carry the load until our great
industrial activity could produce the weapons we so sorely need-
ed to carry the war to the enemy. It is to the everlasting honor
and glory of our submarine personnel that they never failed us in
our days of great peril.”
By the end of World War II, submarines had made more than
1,600 war patrols. Pacific Fleet submarines like Flier accounted
for more than half of all enemy shipping sunk during the
war. The cost of this success was heavy: 52 U.S. Pacific Fleet
submarines were lost, and more than 3,500 submariners remain
on “eternal patrol.”

off.

USS Richard B. Russell (SSN 687) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Richard_B._Russell_(SSN-687)
USS Flier (SS 250) Flier reached Pearl Harbor from New London, on 20 December
1943. After working up, she departed for her first war patrol on
12 January 1944. However, while entering the harbor at Mid-
way Island during a storm on 16 January, she went aground and
was seriously damaged. The submarine rescue vessel Macaw
(ASR-11), which attempted to pull Flier free, also went aground
and ultimately sank.
The damaged submarine was towed back to Pearl Harbor by
USS Florikan (ASR-9), again with difficulties caused by weath-
er, and finally reached the Mare Island Navy Yard, California,
where she was repaired. Flier made another start on her first war
patrol on 21 May 1944, heading from Pearl Harbor to the waters
off Luzon.
She made her first contact on 4 June, attacking a well-escorted
convoy for five merchantmen. Firing three torpedoes at each of
two ships, she sent a large transport to the bottom (Hakusan
Maru) and scored a hit on another ship, before clearing the area
to evade counter-measures.
On 13 June 1944, Flier attacked a convoy of 11 ships, cargo
carriers and tankers, guarded by at least six escorts. The alert
behavior of the escorts resulted in severe attack on Flier before
she could observe what damage she had done to the convoy. On
22 June, she began a long chase after another large convoy,
scoring four hits for six torpedoes fired at two cargo ships that
day, and three hits for four torpe-
does launched against another car-
go ship of the same convoy the
next day.
Flier put in to Fremantle, Australia,
to refit between 5 July 1944 and 2
August, then sailed on her second
war patrol, bound for the coast of Indochina. On the evening of
13 August, as she transited Balabac Strait on the surface, she
was rocked by a great explosion. She sank in 1 minute after
striking the mine, but 13 officers and men got out of her. Eight
of them reached the beach of Mantangula Island after 15 hours
in the water. Friendly natives guided them to a coast-watcher,
who arranged for them to be picked up by submarine, and on
the night of 30-31 August, they were taken on board by Redfin
(SS-272) (photo below).
Flier received one battle star for World War II service on her
single complete war patrol, designated "Successful." She is
credited with having sunk 10,380 tons of Japanese shipping.

Navy Makes Submarines
Quieter, More Stealthy
The Navy is outfitting a prototype Virginia-class attack
submarine platform with a series of upgrades designed
to improve sonar detection and make boats less detecta-
ble and more stealthy.
The work includes the addition of a large vertical array,
special coating materials for the exterior of the subma-
rine and special noise-reduction technologies for the
engine room, Rear Adm. Joe Tofalo, director, submarine
warfare, said Oct. 23 at the Naval Submarine League an-
nual symposium, Falls Church, Va.
The innovations are being worked on the USS South Da-
kota, a Block III Virginia-class attack submarine, or SSN,
now in development.
“The USS South Dakota is a platform for three crucial as-
pects of our efforts to work on acoustic superiority. The
large vertical array is about 60-percent designed with a
preliminary design and we are installing a similar array
on the USS Maryland that is 75-percent complete,” Tofalo
said.
The USS Maryland is an existing nuclear-armed Ohio-
class ballistic missile submarine, or SSBN. The larger
array will extend the detection range and provide the
submarine with an improved intelligence picture re-
garding threats, undersea terrain and what might be op-
erating in a given area.
The external coating technology now being engineered
onto the USS South Dakota, designed in part by the Of-
fice of Naval Research, is intended to decrease the sig-
nature of the boat by making it less detectable to enemy
sensors and sonar.
In addition, about a dozen special noise reduction tech-
nologies are being added to the engine room.
The idea is to stay in front of fast-moving technological
progress on the part of potential adversaries and help
ensure undersea dominance for the U.S. Navy, Tofalo
said. Making a submarine harder to detect and increas-
ing the range of its on-board sonar is designed to pro-
vide a technological advantage to U.S. submarines look-
ing to operate beneath or behind barriers erected by
the weaponry and sensors of potential adversaries.
Many countries such as China, North Korea and Iran
have or are developing long-range anti-ship missiles
designed to prevent surface ships from operating within
a certain distance of the shoreline. These technologies
and weapons could be intended to deny access or deny
an area to U.S. forces, making it much harder to operate
and project power.
Vice Adm. Mike Connor, commander of the Navy’s At-
lantic submarine force, Atlantic, said anti-access, area-
denial efforts are increasingly expanding into the under-
sea domain.
“We need to be ready for a Russia, China, Iran or whoev-
er else who – recognizing the superiority we have today
– seeks to develop an A2/AD like network underwater to
match what many of them currently have on the surface
and in the air. We know that is going to happen,” Connor
said.
Tofalo said the Navy intends to implement these tech-
nical upgrades across the fleet of existing and future at-
tack and ballistic missile submarines. The extent of inte-
gration of these new technologies, however, may largely
depend upon budget considerations.
“It is my intention to pursue all of these acoustic superi-
ority technologies for in service and future SSNs and
SSBNs. The submarine force is the key that unlocks that
A2/AD bubble. We are the folks who are expected to get
in underneath and – at the time and place of our choos-
ing – do what needs to be done. A significant part of our
ability to do this is an acoustic advantage,” Tofalo added.
