2012 Wallpaper Design Competition

  

Celebrating the Bi-Centenary of Augustus Welby Pugin

(1812-1852)

This year’s design competition running in conjunction with Wallpaper History Socety, The Pugin Society, Zoffany and other key industry sponsors will celebrate the 

bi-centenary of Augustus Welby Pugin.

  We would like to invite students to take part in a competition to produce a selection of designs suitable for contemporary wallpaper (wall coverings)

Celebrating the Bi-Centenary of Augustus Welby Pugin (1812-1852)

Work that takes as its starting point Pugin.

You can explore all aspects of the work of Pugin. 

Research - Evidence of personal research is required.

Your research might include - 

primary research – museums, archives, galleries, houses, churches, architectural buildings, libraries and learning resources etc

body of work - Evidence of design development and thinking is required.

Your working practice might include - 

drawing, photography, digital manipulation,

Word document of supporting text of no more than 250 words explaining your ideas/design development.

Round 3 - the interview

• 1 x A2 Storyboard to include Design development.

• 1x 2 ½ meter length of finished wallpaper design 

• 4 x A3 alternative designs 

• 3 colour-ways A4 for each design submitted

• A4 in-situ to scale for one of the designs submitted

• 1st round Judging will take place in May.

• 2nd round selection: 25 students will present their finished length or sample book and supporting design work which will take place in London on 29th June.

• 12 short listed students from the 2nd round will be selected for a 10 minute interview to present their work for selection for work placement prizes on the same day.

• Prizes to include:

• Wallpaper Manufacturing production tour for final 12 shortlisted students

• Prizes to include:

• 25 students will take part in a formal exhibition of work in London Gallery.

• Catalogue of students work to be produced for exhibition.

• Selected students design work to be showcased at the Pugin Society pre-conference event  to be held in Ramsgate on Thursday 12th July and at the 2 Day International conference to be held at the University of Kent, Canterbury.

• Prizes to include:

• Cash prizes.

Wallpaper for the Palace of WestminsterDesigned by A.W.N.Pugin (1812-52)Produced by Samuel Scott for J.G.Crace1847EnglandColour print from woodblocksMuseum no. E.150-1976This is one of more than a hundred papers designed by Pugin for the Palace of Westminster. It exemplifies Pugin's principles of pattern design, combining rich colours with flat formalised motifs. For Pugin, Gothic was the pre-eminent style. He believed that 'All ornament should consist of enrichment of the essential construction of a building' [Pugin, 'True Principles', 1841, reprint, NY, St Martin's Press, 1973, p.1], and for him only the art and architecture of the Gothic period had fulfilled these ideals. He abhorred the debased version of the style promulgated in wallpapers illustrating Gothic ruins or elaborate architecture.

East WindowAugustus W. PuginSt. Paul's Parish ChurchPugin designed the windows in the main body of St Paul's, which were made by the firm of John Hardman (1811-67). The West and East windows are particularly admired, and have recently been restored. The West window features two rows of figures of the saints, and the East windows shows the Tree of Jesse.

• Hi Les, I got into the RCA and have just had my first week there. It is thanks to the wallpaper exhibition really as the head of textiles saw my work there and spoke to Nick. Let me know when I can get my sketchbook from Caroline, does she live in Norwich?

• Hi Les!Lucky I looked at my emails this evening! My month at Zoffany was fantastic. I was getting really hands on with creating collection mood boards, making colourways, sorting fabric swatches.I was also busy putting designs into repeat, and also creating my own designs, (one of which went into print for Sanderson's new collection). Seeing the archives of both Zoffany and Sanderson was amazing, I found many inspiring, beautiful designs in them and could probably have spent a week in there rifling through it all. I also went to the Chelsea Harbour showroom to see new collections from various companies. I worked closely with both Zoffany designers and the designers from Sanderson, working to two different design styles kept my mind open to new designs, also understanding the difference between the two studios' work. As for staying in London for a month, it has done wonders for my confidence and independence.I thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience and was sad to leave them!
