DURGA PUJA 2014
The Bengali Association of Southern California
Dear Friends,
Welcome to 36th Durga Puja of BASC in 2014.
We have waited all year long for this auspicious moment in anticipation of
being filled with joy and divine peace that accompany both our worship
and our festivities. Together let us pray and enjoy every single moment of
this celebration with our families and friends. Let us forgive and forget all our differ-
ences and come together in worshipping Ma Durga.
This year we had a lot of festivities. We started with Saraswati Puja. Following the
tradition, we had Dol in Bharat Sevashram Sangha. We had two mid-year cultural
program with renowned external artists, Rabindra Jayanti with Kamalini Mukherjee
and Natyamela with Debshankar Halder. We had a great Annual Picnic in the re-
laxed environment of English Springs Park with a lot of sports and fun activities.
We continued our collaboration with Dakshini and had two common cultural pro-
grams
- BASC, Dakshini and Sanatan Bengali Society together conducted Dol (Basanta
Utsab)
- BASC and Dakshini conducted a very successful Mahalaya in Bharat Sevashram
Sangha where more than 350 members of both organizations attended.
In future you will see many collaboration between all the Bengali Societies.
My vision is to have a Unified Bengali Community in Southern California in which
all of us will collaborate.
This year, I am delighted that we have announced Sathi, BASCs voluntary wing.
Sathi is in formation stage now and will help our senior citizens, members who are
settling down and members who are suffering from illness.
These programs and events would not have been possible without your donation.
BASC truly appreciates all its sponsors who have been supporting us generously and
have been doing so for many years. Lastly, BASC's success is due to its hard working
and dedicated volunteers. A big salute and a huge THANK YOU to all our volunteers
without whom it would not have been possible to organize this years programs and
events.
We wish each and everyone of you a great Durga Puja and Shubho Bijoya.
On behalf of Team BASC,
Deep Ghosh, President

BASC fondly Remembers
Smt. Chhabi Chakraborti Chhabi Chakrabarti was mother to Sri Jayanta Kumar Chakrabarti and a longtime member of BASC. She was a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and aunt. A gifted graduate from Bethune College, Kolkata and a noble advocate for educa-tion, she was well known for her endless desire to teach and spread the word of
faith across generations. She has left an imprint on many individuals, and she will be deeply missed.
Dr. Sachindra Kumar Chakraborti
Dr. Sachindra Kumar Chakraborti was father to Sri Jayanta Kumar Chakrabarti
and a longtime member of BASC. A man of great honor,
Dr. Sachindra Kumar Chakraborti, passed away unexpectedly in April. A be-
loved father, grandfather, husband, brother, and uncle, he has left behind count-
less memories of his benevolence, his everlasting wisdom, and innumerable
contributions to the world of science. He is lovingly remembered and missed
by many.
Sri Kali Pratim Datta Chowdhury Kali Pratim passed away last February and is survived by his wife, Joystana, and two children, Kali Prasun (Duke) and Priyanka (Diana). He achieved many levels of excellence in his academic and professional career, with several noted distinc-
tions. He served as the prestigious District Commissioner of Kusthia in Bangla-desh, and he was an active volunteer and philanthropist during his time in the United States. He became the vice president of KPC Resolution Company. Kali
Pratim was well read and articulate, someone who would understand and appreci-ate everyones personal point of view. He will be greatly missed by everyone who knew and loved him.
Sri Subir Mitra Obituary by Sagar Rakshit Subir passed away on this September leaving wife Anita and daughter Jayita behind. Subir attended Jadavpur University and was a member of the University Rowing Club. Subir comes from a respectable family in Barackpore. He was one of the early Bengali settlers in LA area and was involved in BASC activities from its very inception. He loved marshal art and was a Karate Black Belt. He did his M.S. in Computer Science from Cal State LB and worked in that field for several years. He was also involved in several Bengali dramas staged by BASC at various Pujas. He was a well liked gentle soul ever present at the BASC functions and his absence will be greatly felt. May his soul rest in peace.
Sri Ganendra Purakayastha Mr. GKP had a very bright academic career - Bachelors in Engineering from IIT Kharagpur followed by 3 masters. He conducted researched in several reputed places including NASA. His friends remember him as a very bright, yet unassum-
ing and pure hearted person. He never married and enjoyed the life as a single per-son. He was helpful to everyone around, however he himself rarely asked for help. He enjoyed music and good food - his favorite being fish curry and mango. Being
a Bengali, he was deeply attached to Mother Durga and Kali, Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and Sri Ramkrishna. His spirituality pulled him to all temples and Gurudwaras in the locality. In his last 5-6 months, he was not keeping good
health. Even in that tough condition, he kept to himself, rarely asking for help. He is remembered fondly by the community.
Sri Tarit Sengupta Tarit Sengupta was a longtime resident of Diamond Bar, and he survived by his wife Papri, son Suman (Joy), and several cousins in Northern California. Tarit graduated from BE College, Shibpur in 1959. After working for several years in
India he and Papri came to the US in 1971. They initially settled in the San Fran-cisco Bay Area and he worked in major projects for engineering/construction com-panies, relocating to construction sites as the job required. In 1984, the family
moved to Diamond Bar. Tarits health declined during the past few years and he retired from work about seven years ago. Tarit was a kind and gracious person and he will be lovingly remembered by all those who knew him.
Smt. Lakshmi Shankar Smt. Lakshmi Shankar was a legendary maestro of north Indian classical music and a stalwart of bhajans. She is survived by her son, Kumar Shankar, her daughter-in-law, Anita Shankar, her granddaughter, Devika Shankar, and her grandson, Sid-dhartha Shankar. Shankar was one of the foremost and well-known vocalists of India and was trained in various disciplines, including Bharat Natyam, Carnatac music, and Rabinra Sangeet. She has been honored with numerous awards, both in India and the United States, and even received a Grammy nomination. Our deep condolences go out to the family, friends and fans all over the world.
Sri Samar Sircar Samar Sircar was a passionate and benevolent surgeon, residing in Rolling Hills, CA since 1978. His skillfulness as a doctor was paralleled by his compassion for
all those around him, from performing surgeries pro bono to taking the time to listen to every persons problems. Dr. Sircar additionally showed a great interest in the celebration and promotion of Indian Culture in the US. While in Norfolk,
Virginia, he was to celebrate Saraswati Pujo in the Community. In Southern Cali-fornia, he founded the Indian Association of Palos Verdes. Samar Sircar passed away this March, and is survived by his wife Vidya, his three daughters, Kanta,

Musical Chairs is a comedy involving twenty five ladies
from our community. It is about the typical ladies gossip
which happens in a party or social gathering in the Bengali
community in USA. All characters are fictitious and involv-
ing as many ladies as possible in the play was the main fo-
cus of the play. The story is totally brainless (with no cere-
bral content!) and the main purpose is just to have fun from
both ends - the audience and the participants.
