UNITED METHODIST CHURCH
March
2012
February 12 Sherry and I hosted a dinner meeting for our Mar-riage Mentors to support the nine couples who serve the Lord by providing valuable marriage preparation for those couples seeking to be married in our congregation. (FYI: This year we have 19 couples pursuing that God-ordained covenant.) Being with the mentors once again reminded me of the re-markable connection that these couples make with those they are men-toring. And alt-hough there are no guarantees that this program can effec-tively protect cou-ples from problems or even separation, the relationships forged between the mentors and their mentorees are real and transparent, and the faith and insights shared are price-less. But this privilege of mentoring is certainly not an experience lim-ited to marriage. It is a method of discipleship that has been used for centuries. The concept implies teaching by example and simple instruction in a “1 on 1” or “1 with a few” relationship. Some call it “experiential study.” It was precisely the style of
Pastor Dan McBride
learning that we find between Jesus and the disciples. He cer-tainly operated on the assump-tion that “More time with fewer people means greater kingdom impact.” Paul and Timothy picked up on this style of disci-pleship and developed a close relationship that Paul spoke freely of “Timothy, my true son in the faith.” The reason I am bringing this to
your attention through this issue of our Newsletter is because it is a strategy of minis-try that we hope to build upon in 2012. I will be encouraging our staff to explore “1
on 1” relationships with those in our congregation willing to en-gage them. We will also be ex-ploring mentoring materials be-ing used in other effective minis-tries as well as discussing ways to jump start the process of ed-ucating and empowering both leaders and lay people to en-gage mentoring in both youth and adult discipleship ministries. So stay tuned…to something old and something new!

Kindergarten-
Jennie Vaughn has taught kindergar-
ten for a few years and also volun-
teers both weeks of Vacaon Bible
School. She had the fun job last year
in the science center making poons
and other excing experiments!
Jennie is an elementary school librar-
ian and media specialist for Love and
Lincoln elementary schools, so you
can see she loves kids at work and
church. She LOVES DISNEY, musicals,
exercise, and she LOVES her family
and her wonderful boys. She enjoys
watching them in their various sports
and assisted her husband, Jake, in
coaching soccer the last two sum-
mers. Jennie and Jake (who is on our
tech team here at the church) live in
Lakewood with their boys, Seth and
Max.
Amber Kautzman is new to our
teaching team this year, assisng her
good friend Jennie. She teaches kin-
dergarteners on Sunday and math at
JCC during the week. Amber lives in
Jamestown with her husband Zach
Maureen on our teaching team!
Dawn Frary and Maureen are both
friends and partners in teaching the
1st grade. Dawn and her husband
Mike live Ashville with their boys,
Tanner, Spencer and Hunter. Dawn
likes to watch sports and can be
found in the stands at not only her
own children’s events, but is there to
support Tanner’s girlfriend and her
brother and sister when they play
also. I have found out that one of
her favorite things to do is to rear-
range her house. She is constantly
moving things around! Dawn is
known to always put others before
herself, and is always more than will-
ing to do something to help some-
one else. I
will end
with a
short li4le
line from
her sister,
“Her family is her life”.
and their two sons, Marcus and Sam.
She enjoys bike riding, hiking, and is
one of those people who are usually
game for whatever anyone sug-
gests…very fun! Her friend summed
her up very well by saying “She loves
hanging with her kiddos and family is
super important”. That certainly
seems to be top of the list on all our
teachers’ interests!

Grade-
Maureen Langebartel has played a
special part in many children’s lives
over the years with both teaching
Sunday school and volunteering with
the Holiday Workshop. Maureen
loves her house in the woods (as do
I…would like to trade with her) and
loves her dogs and cats. She has a
wonderful sense of humor, loves to
travel (envious once again… numer-
ous trips to Alaska!) and to quote her
friend, “a ready smile & would go to
the ends of the earth for a friend in
need.” What a blessing to have

SPRING BREAK VBS Great Ministry Opportunity
The United Christian Advocacy Network (UCAN) will be putting on Vacation Bible School at the Gateway Cen-ter second floor during the week of April 2 - 6, 2012. The program will run from 10am - 12:30 PM each day.
The overall goal of this Mission week is to share God's love with children so that they come to know and follow Jesus and to help them learn to meet God regularly in prayer and His Word.
We are looking for volunteers from various churches to assist in making this a successful week for the King-dom. This is a local missions opportunity and would be great for anyone who has a heart to reach the lost for Christ. Senior high youth groups, mission’s teams, Sun-day School teachers, etc. are all welcome.
Contact Mary Ahlstrom (386-3401) or (485-8221) if you would like to be involved with this outreach.

ADVENTURERS HIKING GROUP I find myself starng to dream of spring and hiking since winter has not measured up to expecta-
ons or inches when I think of snow sports. Hard to picture our group heading out last winter for a
snowshoe hike a?er a blizzard that le? us wading through snow up over our knees on the Overland
Trail. This may have been a good winter for runners, but not so much for snowshoeing and skiing…
sad to say. For those of you who are ready to start thinking of the next season, be watching for
schedules of area hikes as we move into spring. We will plan a variety of distances and a few over-
night backpack trips. A?er the great success of our Adirondack trip, we are planning another one for August this sum-
mer. (For those of you who are wondering just what this Adventures Hiking Group is all about, read below).
Purpose: To promote a sense of personal achievement, learn an appreciaon for the outdoors
and experience the fullness of God in the beauty He created.
Goal: To learn the basic skills of backpacking, to challenge ourselves physically, to form new
friendships, and to grow a deeper appreciaon of the wilderness God created.
COMING IN MARCH - A VISIT TO ZUCKERMAN’S FARM
How many of you read that heading and knew who Mr. Zuckerman was? Do you remem-
ber the “miracle” found dangling in his barn? Homer tells his wife, “We have received a
sign, Edith-a mysterious sign. A miracle has happened on this farm.”
So begins a story about the power of boundless love. More than fi?y years ago, E.B. White
wrote a story demonstrang the Biblical virtues of friendship, kindness, selfless giving, and
miracles. Charlo4e’s Web is a story that goes beyond that of a spider named Charlo4e
who acts to save her friend Wilbur the pig. It is a tale of grace that celebrates “the glory of
everything.” Biblical lessons are everywhere, in every-
day life, and even in the ficonal lives of Fern, Wilbur
and Charlo4e A. Cavaca!
During the month of March children a4ending Junior Church during the 8:30 wor-
ship service will explore the lessons on giving, friendship and miracles while viewing
segments of the 2006 Charlo4e’s web video. Children will be released from worship
to the Family Life Center at approximately 9:00 for this special Jr. Church series. All
kindergarten-3rd graders are invited.

“WE HONOR YOU” !! BPUMC 2012 ADMINISTRATIVE TEAMS
BPUMC has four main administra-
ve leadership teams; Adminis-
trave Board, Staff/ Parish/ Rela-
ons Commi4ee (SPRC), Finance,
and Trustees. Volunteers serving
on these teams have a key role in
the oversight and program devel-
opment of BPUMC. Nominaons
to these teams is a procedure
that is prayerfully entered into
each fall.
In the fall of 2011 the new Nomi-
naon / Leadership Development
Team (NLDT) met for the first
me to begin their official duty
for BPUMC. This team, made up of
members from each Administrave
Team, is charged by our Ad Board to
work with Pastor Dan and the staff
to replace and elect persons coming
on and off these teams. A?er the
NLDT presented their possible nom-
inees to the Ad Brd., they approve
any new persons joining the teams
for the 2012 term. Over the years
here at BPUMC, we have been
blessed with very commi4ed and
faithful volunteers on all of these
teams. Below you will find a com-
plete lisng of all our Ad Min teams
for the 2012 year. As you pass the-
se persons, whose names you see
listed below on these teams, be
sure to extend your sincere appre-
ciaon and pray for them as the
Lord brings them to mind. As your
“Volunteer Champion” and on be-
half of all the staff, we gratefully
acknowledge each team member,
whether your first year or a
“charter” member! “We Honor
You!”

Why is BPUMC so proac.ve about small-group
ministry?
The biblical answer is John 17:11–21 and Acts 2:42-
47. In the John passage, as Jesus faced his death, he
prayed for the community his disciples would experi-
ence a?er he was gone. It was a radical sense of com-
munity, a oneness similar to Christ's unity with the Trin-
ity. Jesus prayed that all those who would become
members of His Church would find within that commu-
nity this form of radical oneness. In Acts 2, when the
Church was born, and the Chrisan community begins
to take shape, we discover the new believers were
coming together in two places that helped foster this
oneness Jesus desired. They regularly met as a large
group in the Temple to hear the teaching of the apos-
tles. They also met in homes as small groups to discuss
the apostles’ teaching, give praise to God, take part in
communion, pray, support each other, and enjoy each
other’s company. We want to follow this pa4ern of the
early Church so that we can experience the same spir-
itual results they did: “each day the Lord added to their
fellowship those who were being saved” (v. 47). Real
community will happen when God brings together peo-
ple who have spiritual affinity and who are ready for
friendships that sck "closer than a brother" (Prov.
18:24). We may not have fully realized Jesus’ dream
for oneness but we are pressing toward that goal at
BPUMC.
What important roles do the Growth groups play
within BPUMC? First of all, Growth groups have provided a context for
care and spiritual growth. The caring that occurs in
small groups gives people a sense that someone is sup-
porng them and walking with them on their journey.
Small-group discipleship doesn't have to turn pagans
into missionaries; it only needs to help people take the
next step with God. I've been in many groups, and the
best thing any small-group leader did was to help me
see where God was working in my life. A second and
more important role of small-group ministry is its po-
tenal to provide an expression for what the Apostle
Peter called the “priesthood” of believers (see 1 Peter
2:9). In Jesus' Church every believer is a priest, called
to serve God’s purposes by using the gi?s and callings
He has given to all believers. As Peter says: “God has
given each of you a gi? from his great variety of spiritu-
al gi?s. Use them well to serve one another” (1 Peter
4:10). Our Growth groups provide a great opportunity
to empower our congregants to be priests who minis-
ter to other believers. It engages more believers in min-
istry, produces more leaders, and mulplies the
church’s ability to make disciples. And that's what we
are all about – making fully devoted followers of Christ.
Be sure to check the Sunday bulle.n each week to find
out about new Discipleship Opportuni.es to be
offered in March.

POTLUCK AND HYMN SING
Sunday, March 18 at 5:00 PM
Those who attended the October Potluck and Hymn sing will agree it was a huge blessing. We enjoyed delicious food and eating with our friends and neighbors. We fed our souls as we sang praises to the Lord Most High. It was wonderful to see people from every age bracket as well as those from each of our three services come
together for this special occasion.
Bring a dish to pass that serves 8-12 and
an eagerness to praise the God we love.

There is a New Venture going on in the lives of Jason &
Laura Swain! Mapping Old Delhi! Informaon in the
February 2012 issue of their newsle4er, SWAINS’ SO-
JOURNING, they declare, “the new project is actually
fun, but extremely ring. We are venturing “to map
the Muslim-laden area of Old Delhi. Any old Delhi map
looks like the city was laid out at night; not a single
straight street! I have been wandering the streets,
lanes, and alleys trying to determine the outline for
such a map. The idea is two fold. First, we are creang
maps that foreigners can use to explore areas of North
India on their own and when they desire they can travel
off the beaten path to highlights we think are worth a
detour. Secondly, as we wander the streets we hope to
find Muslims along the way to befriend - both shop-
keepers and neighborhoods alike. I am even more ex-
cited to spend me with their owners, sharing nuggets
of truth over me with them. We have seen the Lord’s
hand in this mapping quest and can’t wait to see how
the Lord uses all this together. We count it a great joy
and gi? to be here daily in North India because of the
sacrifices that you personally make to sustain us in
prayer, joining us , and your selfless giving that enables
us to be here.” Please remember these missionaries
daily in prayer.
