All rights reserved. Lately I’ve been having wrist pain. My GP tells me I need an operation. He reassures me that it’s a standard operation and I won’t need to stay overnight. Before I go to a hospital, I want to check what my Cigna plan covers. I remember the Cigna personal webpages. Here I can see that my plan covers the operation. I’ve only just moved to Nairobi, so I have no idea how to find a good hospital. I decide to ask my colleague James, he seems to know Nairobi quite well. James doesn’t know who to recommend, but tells me I can easily find one in Cigna’s network. In the search tool on Cigna’s personal webpages, a list of hospitals nearby that can do the operation comes up. All I need to do is choose one. In my first week at my new organisation, the HR manager informed me of my medical insurance plan with Cigna. He also told me that I can find all information about my plan on their website. I then call Cigna to let them know I’m planning a visit to the hospital. Cigna can now send a ‘Guarantee of payment’ to the

hospital and me. This document says that cigna covers the operation and what part of the invoice can be sent directly to

them. It’s great that I don’t have to advance the payment and

claim for it later.

At the hospital I show my cigna membership card and the ‘guarantee of payment’. Cigna will settle

the invoice directly with the hospital. After the surgery, the doctor prescribes some painkillers. With

the prescription and receipt, I claim the expenses with Cigna through their personal webpages and

a few days later I receive an email from Cigna to say that I can find a settlement note with all the

payment details on my personal webpages. When I have a look online, I also see the hospital bill for

my surgery.

While we’re on holiday in Vienna, my daughter,

Jessica, is involved in a traffic accident and is

rushed to the hospital. Jessica is very clever. So

when she’s admitted she remembers to tell the

nurse she has a Cigna medical plan and they can

find her membership card in her wallet.

On the way to hospital, I call Cigna to inform

them of Jessica’s accident and tell them it’s an emergency. They tell me that they’ll send a

‘guarantee of payment’ to the hospital today.

The only thing I have to do is file a notification of accident form.

At the hospital the nurse assures me that Jessica

is okay. I’m so relieved! While I’m waiting for

Jessica’s cast to be fitted, I use my mobile app

to complete the additional form* and make sure

to add the contact details of the other person

involved in the traffic accident, the witnesses, and

the police.

› Ask the hospital to fill it in and return it to us two weeks before your admission. easy!
