My View: Homecoming in2005 was a Blast!

by Bill Crocker, ’60 [email protected]

It was another terrific Homecoming Weekend.I arrived from California on Friday, just in time tomake the traditional Homecoming kickoff recep-tion at the University Inn in West Lafayette.

My era, the late 1950s, was well represented.Harvey Hostetler, ’60, and Jack Elwell, ’62, the“famous” gridiron kings, discussed football strate-gy while another “king,” Larry Miller, ’59,described his latest woodworking project, thehouse mailroom setup. The Alumni Board has contracted with a service andmaintenance company to make monthly inspections.Company representatives will work with Norm Williams, ’64,to ensure that code violations are addressed and necessaryrepairs completed. Cost accountability will also be developed.

Chapter members are very pleased with the new foodservice program. John Gerberich, ’03, an Alumnus activein the food service industry, addressed last year’s dissatis-faction, created a plan, and hired a cook after many inter-views. Now everyone is very satisfied and praise has beenreceived from the entire Chapter. This change was vitaland thanks goes to Brother Gerberich for his work.

Not to be overly optimistic, but I think the Chapter is inthe best financial condition that it has been for severalyears. The Alumni are as supportive as ever, and the presentgroup of young men may be the best that the Chapter hasseen in years. With that, we can only say,“Go Boilers.”

Alumni President’s Reportby Warren Rich, ’53 [email protected], Purdue Alumni of Delta Upsilon, Inc.

““MMission accomplished.” Last Spring, Purdue’ssafety engineer informed Chapter leadershipthat the house sleeping rooms did not meet

university safety codes. Chapter members were notallowed to return to the house in the Fall until theplatform sleeping arrangements were modified.

This presented several challenges: A modification planhad to be developed and funds raised. Dick Hegeman,‘49,Reid Ricciardi, ’94, and Norm Williams, ’64, finalized theplan and an appeal letter was sent to all Alumni.

Working at different times, several volunteers strip-ped, caulked, painted, and rewired the sleeping rooms. Anoutside contractor built bunks, following a standardizedroom plan. Each man living in the house now has a bed, desk, and dresser/wardrobe -- something not offered inthe past. An inspection occurred this Fall resulting in afew discrepancies that were corrected. The safety engineerwas quite impressed. His comment was,“Kudos for all thehard work your group has done to bring your Fraternityinto compliance. Remarkable!”

The Chapter was blessed with a lead gift of $50,000for this renovation from Warren Scott, ’48, one of our mostgenerous supporters. With Warren showing the way, thecontributions have grown to $120,000. It can only beimagined as to what the Chapter’s financial situationwould have been without this Alumni support.

This is the first year since moving into the new housethat the Alumni have not had to provide general financialsupport to the Chapter. It was a break-even school year.

Our Alumni Treasurer Byron Lee, ’51, can only smileas he contemplates 2010 when the last of the bonds areredeemed. It may be possible to tackle the many projectsthat have been on hold these many years. Incidentally, bonds are still being contributed to the DU Foundation.

Rush remains the lifeblood of the Fraternity. Twenty-two were pledged in the Fall with 18 to be initiated. If 15are initiated from the ’06 Spring class, we will be withinour goal to keep the occupancy at a break-even level of 60men. Thanks to Reid Ricciardi, ’94, and Al Parker, ’75, forworking with the Rush Committee.

Thanks to Larry Miller, ’59, who spent many hourscreating a crisis management document that wasapproved by the Board. This document will serve as thebible for resolving problems of the violation of universitystandards and irresponsible acts.

Alumni Treasurer’s Reportby Byron Lee, Jr., ‘51 [email protected]

The Chapter’s Fall financial status is the most encour-aging situation that I have seen in many years. Fifty-sevenBrothers are living in the House, the highest number since2000. A large number of these Brothers have paid theirroom and board, using the annual plan, which improvesthe cash flow. The accounts receivable are better. However, there are still too many Brothers whosepayments are behind by at least 60 days. Everyone who isin arrears at this level is encumbered while beingcounseled and a payment plan created. This series ofactions appears to be working.

Eight Pledges were initiated in January. It is anticipatedthat the Fall pledge class will have 21 members and theSpring class 10 to 15 members. It is hoped that this numberof Pledges will maintain the current level of members livingin the House. Maintaining this level is financially important.

The major study and sleeping room renovation andgrease trap repair cost more than $60,000. However, thesesignificant improvements removed the fire code violationsand fixed a serious problem in the kitchen, much to theActives’ satisfaction. This renovation project was possiblethanks to Warren Scott, ’48, the over 100 Alumni who methis challenge, and the major work performed by 35 Actives, parents and Alumni during the summer work session.

Approximately 50 Alumni signed in at the Fridayevening reception and homecoming events. Many compli-ments concerning the House renovations were received. There is more to do, and continued support from everyoneis needed.

Alumni Spotlight: Al Schleicher III, ’66

by Bill Crocker

AAllison Schleicher III, ’66, is of a rare breed, oneof the very few Brothers who can claim anunbroken connection with the beginning of

the Purdue Chapter of Delta Upsilon.His grandfather,Allison R. Schleicher, ’14, was a

member of the Cleofan Club, which was the Purdue cam-pus men’s club that successfully petitioned the nationalDelta Upsilon Fraternity to become the Fraternity’s 48thChapter. He became a founding member of the Chapterupon initiation on December 6, 1914. Allison R.

Schleicher, Jr., continuedthe legacy, graduating in1939. Al Jr.’s brother, Scott, was also a Purdue DU,graduating a year later.

Brother Al III graduat-ed with a Bachelor ofScience in MechanicalEngineering. He began hiscareer with IBM in 1967 insystems engineering andsales.

Eleven years later, heswitched to finance andcontinued with IBM in SanJose, Calif., in product pric-ing.

Al was named director of U. S. treasury operations atIBM’s headquarters in Armonk, N.Y., in 1983. During thefollowing six years, he served in executive positions in cor-porate financial strategy, corporate budgets, was controllerof the technology group, and vice president of finance forthe IBM Credit Corporation.

Al continued with IBM in the 1990s as chief financialofficer for several of the organization’s groups, includingtechnology group, personal systems group, global financ-ing, and global sales and distribution group. He was alsoinvolved in headquarters financial assignments inbusiness strategy and product pricing.

He was IBM’s partnership executive for PurdueUniversity. In addition, he represented the organization asa director for Transarc Corporation, Digital DomainCorporation, NHL Interactive Cyber Enterprises, andRational Software Corporation.

Since his retirement,he has served as a directorof Catapluse, Inc., RationalSoftware Corporation, andBigToeSports.com. He hasserved on the Boards ofCouncilors of theUniversity of SouthernCalifornia’s School ofEngineering and itsIntegrated Media SystemsCenter. He was a directorof the Napa ValleySymphony Association.

He is currently adirector of E2OPEN, a sup-ply chain software and services venture; a member of theDean’s advisory council of Purdue’s Krannert School ofBusiness; and an advisor to Sandium, an HVAC distribu-tion startup, and to a software startup, Nor1.

Al’s many honors and awards include three fromPurdue University: Krannert School of BusinessDistinguished Alumni Award in 1994, honorary Doctor ofManagement in 2003, and Distinguished ME Alumni in2004. He views his years at Purdue as a time during whichhe matured and developed skills for the future.

As a DU, he learned to live, work and play with agreat team. This was critical to his success in businessand his personal life.

Al and Nancy Schleicher have been married for 30years and reside in Napa, Calif.

They have two children: Allison R. IV, a computergame developer for Sigil in Carlsbad, Calif., and Marissa, the registrar of the Roswell New Mexico Art Museum.

Another big event for Al wasthe special day he receivedhis honorary doctoratedegree from our university.

Brother Al Schleicher, ’66,attends every Purdue footballgame possible -- includingthe 2004 Sun Bowl game vs.Arizona State.

The House Needs YOU!The strongest Fraternities and Sororities at

Purdue are the ones with active and consistentAlumni involvement and support. Nothing is moreimportant than this to keep our Chapter alive, well, and appealing to prospective Members.

We hope you will keep our Chapter in mind andcontribute whatever you can of your time, talent, andtreasure. We will always welcome you as an attendeeand speaker at our scholarship dinners, initiationceremonies, meetings with Pledges, and the like.

Our Undergraduates also appreciate your recom-mendations in recruitment. Please tell us about anyPurdue students — present or future — who wouldbe good candidates.

Homecoming (continued from page 1)

However, four hours up high in the north endzone left lit-tle doubt as to where I sat. The “west” side of my face wasbright red and peeled for a week.

Cathy Grady and Michele Fettig, the Chapter’s newcooks, outdid themselves with a wonderful barbecue afterthe game. We had chicken, hotdogs, hamburgers, bakedbeans, and macaroni salad. There was also a large sheetcake, which was engulfed by the Alumni. Kathie andMichele replaced Cecil Davis who was the Chapter’s cookfor eight years. They are very popular with the Brothers. As you know, good chow makes for happy guys.

The Elwells, Richard Huff and his wife, and I retired tothe University Inn’s restaurant that evening, watched theend of the Notre Dame/University of Southern Californiagame on TV, and drank a few beers. There was definitelytension in the air as Notre Dame appeared to be on theverge of handing USC its first defeat. I was the only onefrom California in the room and thought that it would beappropriate for USC to win, since they are ranked the #1team in the nation. However, I was alone. Although noloyal Purdue alumnus should ever root for Notre Dame, itseems to be worse to root for any California team when itplays the Irish. But, in the end, this misplaced loyalty didno good. USC won.

We stayed a while longer, still catching up on eachother’s lives. Finally, I cried “Uncle” and decided to leave.Although I can’t make it next year, the others promised tocarry on the comradeship at the next HomecomingWeekend, September 22-24, 2006.

Mark your calendars, Brothers.

(Bob) Steiger, ’49Bob Steiger, ’49, passedaway July 9. This photoof Brother Steiger wasreceived just after we fin-ished our July edition.

As we said then, Bobwas a tireless supporterof DU. There was lot ofDU in Bob and a lot ofBob in DU. He loved hisFraternity.

Class of 1965 ReunionBrother Bill Ribble provided the information for this article.

Seven members of the class of 1965 and their spousesreunited during our recent Homecoming weekend. It wasthe 40th anniversary of their graduation, and attendeesincluded Steve and Eleonore Johnson, Dave and BevAckerman, Jim Bishop, and the four Bills: Bill and ClaireRibble, Bill and Susan Bowman, Bill and Julie Damon, andBill and Linda Briscoe. Festivities included dinner Fridaynight, the big game on Saturday, dinner Saturday night, and breakfast on Sunday morning.

The fellowship was wonderful, and the conversationand banter were as if they had not lost contact with eachother over the years. In fact, some had not seen each other

since graduation. Three of the four Bills — Ribble, Damon, and Briscoe — actually knew each other in high school. There were comments about nicknames, memorable expe-riences (both on and off campus), notable Brothers, and, ofcourse, discussions about kids and grandkids.

Bill Bowman fondly remembered trips to theWisconsin and Miami DU houses in the 1960s where the

boys were allowed to drink beer in the Chapter rooms. BillRibble recalled the time that his pledge class rousted JimGreene, ’63, out of a middle bunk in the horizontalposition and then dropped him on to the floor. Hebounced! Then there was the time when our old Chapter house on Northwestern Avenue was nearly destroyed bythe Fall 1966 Pledges returning from their walkout. TheBrothers were ready with hoses hanging out of the win-dows, fire escape stairs blocked, and furniture piled atthe house’s front entrance. (The furniture took the place of

the front door that the Pledges had stolen.) The Pledges got a taste of “help week” a bit early that

year. The last time that this class assembled was in 1990 for

their 25th reunion. All agreed that the next reunionshould be much sooner. Tentative plans are for 2010.

We hope to see all of them sooner than that,if possible!

Chapter President’s Reportby Ben Van Laan, ’06 [email protected]

DDuring the weekend prior to the beginning ofschool, retreats were held to prepare for the Fallsemester. The Chapter Executive Board met on

Saturday,August 20. Alumni Warren Rich, Byron Lee, ReidRicciardi, and Juan Velasquez attended. The ability totransfer on-going projects from outgoing to incomingExecutive Boards, enhanced by the Executive Board officerexpectation sheets, was discussed.

An all-Brotherhood retreat was held August 21.Attendance was the best that I’ve seen since I’ve been aDU. It was a very productive afternoon. With the help ofWarren, Byron, Reid, Juan, Jim Meek (VP Recruitment),and Marcus Hudetz (VP Loss Prevention), the attendeeswere separated into smaller groups, and goal-setting, lossprevention policies, and recruitment were discussed. MattPainter, Purdue’s head men’s basketball coach, gave aspeech about how Big Ten college basketball recruitmentrelates to fraternity recruitment. His presentation wasexcellent and ended the day nicely.

After the Chapter received the award for the bestrecruitment at the Delta Upsilon Leadership Institute inDenver this past summer, the recruitment juggernaut con-tinued this Fall. Eighteen new associate memberscompleted Pledgeship (see photo onnext page). The retention of the mem-bers of this class was higher than it hasbeen for several years. The Chapter’sFall recruitment program netted a verysolid group of 22 Pledges (18 haveremained). Although Chapter membersare very proud of their accomplish-ment, it was a bit of a disappointmentthat the Chapter’s goal of 25 men wasnot reached. A number of men decidedto wait until the Spring of 2006 topledge, so it is expected that the goal of15 for that class will be met.

There have been problems with theChapter’s Judicial Board system over thelast several years. It has been difficult to force accountabil-ity for the actions or inactions of members because of alack of acceptable punishment regulations. The ExecutiveBoard met with the Judicial Board to brainstorm ways tosolve this issue. This resulted in Judicial Board guidelinesthat will be given to all members of the Chapter. Theseguidelines clearly state what is expected and the

Twenty-three Brothers traveled by bus to Turkey Run State Park and canoeddown a four-mile creek. It took about four hours, and it was a fun and success-ful Brotherhood-enhancing, team-building trip.

We competed in the Delta Zeta Turtle Tug. After manytough rounds, DU finished in the semi-finals. This is a tugof war event benefitting the speech and hearing impaired.

consequences of failure to comply. Alumni Boardmembers will be given copies and comments are welcome,as usual.

Dick Hegeman, ’49, assisted the Executive Board inproposing that each Chapter Executive Board memberhave an Alumni partner with whom he can share ideas. Ithank you all for participating in this important program.

It will reduce Warren’s and Reid’s responsibilities and create a closer bond between members of the two boards.

The Chapter’s 22-member sophomore class attendedthe Indiana Greek Leadership Conference in October. Thekeynote speaker was Brother Will Keim, InternationalChaplain of Delta Upsilon, Pacific ‘71. He was very wellreceived, and the attendees expressed positive commentson the day’s events. Thank you for sponsoring theseChapter representatives. Many leadership positions areopen on campus, and a conference suchas this one encourages younger Chaptermembers to become involved in campusactivities.

The Brothers presented the secondannual DU Dream Girl in November. This philanthropy was restarted lastyear. The event consisted of girls fromvarious Sororities competing to be the2005 “Dream Girl” through compe-titions, such as Change Wars, a triviacompetition, and a formal dinner.Thirteen girls competed this year, andnearly $2,000 was raised for the Boysand Girls Club of Lafayette. Thisamount was three times more than wasraised last year. It is hoped that this momentum willdevelop the DU Dream Girl program into one of the mostsuccessful philanthropies on campus.

The side room renovations have been completed andlook fantastic. The House was ready for occupancy onSunday,August 14, thanks to your support and all of thehard work this summer. The fire and safety inspection wascompleted the following week. Alumni, returning to cam-pus for Homecoming weekend, were very favorablyimpressed with the renovations and the incredible land-scaping provided by Brother Bob Jenkins,‘64. Plans to ren-ovate the formal and Chapter rooms are being finalized.

The current Executive Board’s term -- and my term asPresident -- have come to an end. The new ExecutiveBoard was elected in November. Our new President isTyler Lempa, a sophomore studying mechanical engineer-ing. Others on the Board are Martin Ward, VPMembership Education; Andrew Pottenger,VP PublicRelations; Brent Gardner,VP Membership Recruitment;Chris Sieracki,VP Scholarship; Bobby Bonczek, Secretary;Adam Hudetz, Treasurer; Christian Hall,VP LossPrevention; Lars Moen, Fraternity Social Chairman; ColinPennington, Sorority Social Chairman; and John Zarse,Philanthropy Chairman. Email addresses and telephone

numbers for these men are available at our website:http://web.ics.purdue.edu/~du/members.php

I would like to personally thank you for allowing meto serve as the President of the Purdue Chapter of DeltaUpsilon. I have had a chance to meet many Alumni fromaround the country, and your support is very important toChapter operations. I am confident that the new Boardwill do a great job, and its leadership will continue to movethe Chapter forward.

AA Record YRecord Year! ear! Last April, the Alumni Board met for our semi-annual

meeting to discuss the state of the Chapter and makeplans for the future. One item that was front and centerwas the immediate need to renovate the individual roomsas required by the University following a fire/safetyinspection. At the time, we knew we were facing a heftybill -- perhaps $75,000 or more to do the job right.

As has been the nature in challenging times with ourPurdue Chapter,a DU hero stepped right up to get the ballrolling. In this case, it was Brother Warren Scott, '48. With agift of $50,000,he challenged all DU Alumni to reach deepand help provide the funds to renovate the sleeping andstudy rooms in each suite. And step up we did: BetweenJanuary 1,2005,and December 31,2005,nearly $120,000was contributed to Purdue DU from 118 Alumni Brothers.

While the gifts have put DU in a much better financialposition, we still have projects to tackle that will need sig-nificant leadership support. The current campaign willcontinue in 2006 until the April meeting of the AlumniBoard when we will evaluate our progress and assess thenext steps to take. Don't be surprised if you hear fromone of us in the New Year.
