A Do-It-All Wonder Ingredient

“There aren’t a lot of ingredients that I unequivocally recommend to just about every skin type - but topical niacinamide isone of ‘em!”

- Dr. Leslie Baumann, Chief of the Division of Cosmetic Dermatology at the University of Miami School of Medicine.

Niacinamide is a multitasking ingredient for skin care. Topically applied, it has been shown to increase ceramide and free fatty acid levels in skin, helping to seal in moisture and improve appearance of photoaged facial skin. It makes skin look brighter, and reduces the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines, hyperpigmentation, and redness. It has also been shown to stimulate microcirculation in the skin and prevent skin from losing water content and maintain healthy moisture levels. Niacinamide has also earned a reputation for cleansing the skin and reducing the appearance of blotchy, red skin areas.2

Niacinamide lacks the vasodilator actions of nicotinic acid, and has not been shown to produce the flushing, itching, and burning sensations of the skin commonly seen with nicotinic acid. It is therefore considered safe as a component in topical cosmetic applications.3

Nature’s Perfect MoisturizerFor all its internal health benefits, pure coconut oil is an effective all-natural “anti-aging” moisturizer when applied topically. When absorbed into skin and connective tissues, coconut oil helps to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles by helping to keep connective tissues strong and supple. It also helps exfoliate the outer layer of dead skin cells, making skin smoother.

Physiologist and biochemist Ray Peat, Ph.D. considers coconut oil an antioxidant6 due to its stability and resistance to oxidation and free radical formation.

When it comes to head-to-toe healthy skin, research now shows that the foods you put in your body are as vital as the products you put on it.

Among the must-have foods for healthy skin: omega-3 fatty acids. Camelina oil is rich in antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids. These fatty acids are responsible for the health of the cell membrane, which influences the cells’ ability to hold water. Keeping this barrier healthy yields skin with a youthful appearance and function.4

Research documents that dietary supplementation with omega-3 fatty acids provides benefits to skin quality and its aging process. Because a significant portion of ingested essential fatty acids (EFAs) are oxidized by the liver (up to 60% of ALA and 20% of LA before reaching peripheral tissues), topical application is a more efficient route of delivery for skin benefits. Topical application has high clinical relevancein improving EFA deficiency to soothe dry skin, making it look soft and moisturized.5

Flower Power for Your SkinRosehip oil contains provitamin A (mostly beta-carotene) and is high in linoleic acid (omega-6) and linolenic acid (omega-3). It soothes imbalanced, stressed skin. Rosehip oil is frequently used to help cover scarring and diminish the appearance of age spots. It also speeds up the migration cycle of keratin, which promotes skin cell renovation. Adding to this, EFAs present in this oil contribute to skin hydration and well-being. Together, these properties of rosehip oil make skin appear youthful and moisturized.7
