floor heating General inrmatin

In last years floor heating has become verypopular solution. Many factors have causedit. In opposition to the traditional solu-tions, floor heating heats uniformly thewhole floor area and assures good thermalcomfort.

Floor heating systems work with lowparameters, which limits energy consump-tion. Heat emission through the wholefloor area causes subjective feeling of high-er temperature in the room. It allows todecrease temperature by 1-2 C, saving from6 to 12% of energy.

Low temperature of water in the systemgives wide possibilities of unconventionalheat sources use, as solar energy, heatpumps, waste heat. Moreover, floor heat-ing allows complete freedom of interiorarrangement, gives unlimited architecturalpossibilities and rooms partitioning.

Expansion joint

Expansion joint use conditionsJointless floor thermal expansion factor is 0.01 mm/(mK). It means that 8 m long screed due toheating from 10 C to 40 C extends by 3 mm. This extension must be taken over by edge tape.

If the room has non-typical shape or is too big, the heating screed must be additionally separatedwith use of expansion joint profile with insulation tape.

Expansion joint profile must be used when:- screed area exceeds 40 m,

- one of screed edges is longer than 8 m,- screed edges lengths ratio is higher than :1,- room has complicated shape, e.g. L, T, C.

Caution: Expansion joint profile must be installed in each door-way. No expansion joint in abovecases may lead to floor or pipes destruction.

General inrmatin

Purmo is a complete system, designed or heating and tap water. Its use allowsrealization o all systems in the building radiator and loor central heating, andhot and cold water.System certiication or use in potable water systems is conirmed by proper Polish

and oreign certiicates.

Installation technologyCorrect installation o sanitary and heating systems in Purmo HKS system requiresuse o proessional tools, which eliminate the leaks possibility. They also assuremany years o ailure-ree system operation. Ater planning the pipes route or theindividual receivers the installation begins.

Pipes cuttingThe irst step is cutting pipes to the appropriate length. Cutting is perormed withuse o cutters or disc cutters. They assure cutting plane perpendicularity to the pipelongitudinal axis. It is not allowed to use saws or other cutting tools, creating mate-rial chips, which are diicult or even impossible to remove rom the system.

Pipes bendingPipes route direction is changed by bending, with use o material elasticity. Bendingis perormed with bare hands, maintaining bending radius equal to pipe diam-eters ( x d). With use o internal spring it is possible to bend without risk o acci-dental pipe breaking.

Fittings installationPipe end, deormed during cutting, should be deburred and calibrated. It is per-ormed with use o calibrator tool with proper diameter. It allows or correct ittingconus positioning in the pipe without O-ring damage risk. Ater those necessarypreparation activities the connector is installed. Put the nut and cut ring on the pipeend, and resolutely insert conus with O-ring into the pipe. Ater assembling all con-nector parts tighten the nut with hand, then with installation wrench.

In case o pressed connectors the preparation activities are perormed in the same

way. Press ittings are mounted, with previously deburred and calibrated pipe in away, that itting body is pushed inside the pipe, but compression sleeve stays out-side. Well positioned pipe can be seen in small check windows in the sleeve. Laststep is to press this connection, with pressing tool and using jaws with TH proile.Plastic ring assures right position o the jaw.

Pipes positioningIn the internal central heating and water systems pipes should be installed in ther-mal insulation or protective pipe. Peschel is not an insulation according to polishlaw requirements (Dz. U. th o april r.). Peschel protects pipes against injuriesand must be used when pipe trace crosses extansion joints or walls. During pipesroutes designing remember about their thermal expansion, paying attention tocorrect positioning o ixing holders, constant points and compensations. Detailedcompensation solutions should use the sel-compensation phenomenon, andshould be taken into consideration during system designing. In passages through

the loors use plastic sleeves.

Pressure testAccording to COBRTI Instal, part "Technical conditions or tap water installationsexecution and acceptance" technical requirements, pressure test must be doneater when installation is assemblied. All operations regarding installation execu-tion with HKS pipe system, must be done properly according to COBRTI Instal, part "Technical conditions or tap water installations execution and acceptance".

ApplicationWall heating is used, for example, in historical buildings, where it is not possibleto install floor heating due to precious floors, in rooms where heating of othersurfaces would be harmful, but also when floor heating is insufficient. In mod-

ern building it is often used as the only heat source in the room.Purmo wall heating may be installed on internal and external walls. Wall heat-ing on external walls requires thermal insulation on external side.

Energy savingOperation parameters for surface heating are much lower than those for radia-tor systems. It allows significant energy savings, resulting from heat losses limi-tation in supply pipes. Often, besides gas and oil, other energy sources are avail-able, like e.g. waste heat or heat pumps, which may not be used in traditionalheating systems due to too low temperature of heating medium. However,temperature obtained by those unconventional heat sources is just perfect forsurface heating.

Heating pipeFor over 30 years there are surface heating systems with plastic pipes. Eithercrosslinked polyethylene pipes or polyethylene pipes with aluminium layer areperfect for such systems. Safety and reliability of heating systems from plasticpipes are the reasons of their growing application range in tap water systems.Life of those pipes considerably exceeds 50 years, also for high operationalparameters.All elements of Purmo surface heating systems are subjected to regular testsin independent institutions, and have all required certificates. Our technicalconsultants will help You to solve problems connected with elements selectionand realization.

QualityUsers and contractors require durable pipes, equipped with layer preventingoxygen penetration into the system. If prices of pipes offered on the market arenot similar to each other, there are for sure differences in their quality.As in surface heating systems pipes are permanently connected with buildingelements, and system defects repair always causes very high costs, pipe selec-

tion is the most important thing, and their high quality should be assuredalready during design stage.All pipes offered by Purmo have quality certificates, issued by independent testinstitutions. They fulfil requirements of appropriate standards and regulationsand assure the highest safety and durability, which is the most important thingfor the surface heating.It is the high quality of Purmo PE-X and Purmo HKS pipes, which makes the basisfor 10 years warranty for all our systems and products.

Wall heating systemThe most often used wall heating system is wet system. Wet system is usuallyused in new buildings and during modernization, and dry system usually duringrenovation and in buildings built in dry technology.Maximum surface temperature must not exceed 35 C. Moreover, already dur-ing designing it is required to take into consideration places, where wall will

be covered by e.g. shelves or hanging cabinets. Exclude those surfaces fromwall heating or precisely define drilling points for fixing expansion bolts. Notemoreover that also standing furniture, e.g. wardrobes, make heat transfer tothe room difficult.Wall linings made from insulation materials, like cork, foam, cloth, woodenwainscot by definition do not cooperate effectively with wall heating system.Decision of lining material selection must be preceded by tests, checking if thegiven material is suitable for wall lining.

Realization in wet systemWall heating system Purmo Railjet may cooperate withcommonly used plasters. Pipes are fixed directly onraw wall with use of plastic strips. Distance betweenpipes is usually 150 mm.As the plaster should be connected with wall in the

best possible way, it is not allowed to fix pipes onthe insulation layer. When wall heating is realizedon external wall, it must be insulated from outside.Maximum temperature in case of gypsum plasters is50 C.Gypsum plaster is spread in one layer so the heatingpipes are covered with 10 mm of mortar layer. Cementand clay plasters are realized in two steps. Pipes mustbe covered with 10 mm layer.Total plaster thickness is 26-28 mm. In order to preventcracking, use special reinforcing mesh.

Pipes fixing stripPipes fixing strip in Purmo Railjet FA9IP08114170000system is made from high quality plastic. It is used for

fixing pipes 14 17 mm in intervals 50, 100, 150, etc.Circuits may be connected individually to PURMOmanifold or e.g. with use of T-pipes to HKS pipe, posi-tioned around the room.

Pipes installationRails are fixed to the wall (usually vertical) in intervals400 500 mm with use of expansion bolts. Purmo railsare equipped with clips, allowing for perfect fixing of14, 16 and 17 mm Purmo pipes usually 100-150 mm.Pipe is positioned in meander form (usually horizon-tally). Floor heating special applicationsWater loor heating, due to its unmatched advantages: no visible heating ele-ments, heat transer by radiation on the whole loor surace, assuring propertemperature and thermal comort in places, where it is required, is used in the

ollowing objects: motion activities rooms, e.g. kindergartens, schools or sporthalls, and industrial production and storage halls. Floor heating systems maybe successully used in historical buildings, museums and churches. Floor heating in open spaces

DesignHeating pipes are usually installed directly in the concrete or in sand ballastlayer. Concrete and pavement blocks layer thickness over the pipes should be15 20 cm, depending on designed loads. Al/PE-RT 16x2 mm, 17x2 mm, 20x2 mm, and system insulation Rolljet/Faltjet.The whole thing is covered with standard loor, approximately 65 mm thick.Maniolds or loor heating are equipped with adjustment valves and thermo-static inserts, adapted or thermoelectric heads/actuators assemble.Adjustment is perormed with use o one combined adjustment device or loorheating and cooling with proper sensors.The most disadvantageous thermal load o the system takes place duringcooling, as the supply temperature must be determined and not cause thecondensation. Approximately 15 C is assumed (not less), moreover the supplyand return temperatures dierence is only 2 3 K. For such conditions the pipespacing calculations are perormed. Usually it is positioned quite densely, withmaximum spacing 100 150 mm.
