PURPOSE AND CONTENTSOF THIS MAP
Designation of a road, trail, or area for motorveh icle use by a particular class of veh icle under 36CFR 212.51 sh ould not be interpreted as encouragingor inviting use, or to imply th at th e road, trail or area ispassable, actively maintained, or safe for travel. M otorveh icle designations include parking along designatedroutes and at facilities associated w ith designatedroutes w h en it is safe to do so and w h en not causingdamage to National Forest System resources.Seasonal w eath er conditions and natural events mayrender designated routes and trails impassable forextended periods. Designated areas may containdangerous or impassable terrain. M any designatedroads and trails may be passable only by h igh -clearance veh icles or four-w h eel drive veh icles.M aintenance of designated roads and trails w illdepend on available resources, and many may receivelittle maintenance. Th is motor veh icle use map identifies th ose roads,trails, and areas designated for motor veh icle use under36 CFR 212.51 for th e purpose of enforcing th eproh ibition at 36 CFR 261.13. Th is is a limited purpose.Th e oth er public roads are sh ow n for information andnavigation purposes only and are not subject todesignation under th e Forest Service travelmanagement regulation. These designations apply only to NationalForest System roads, National Forest Systemtrails, and areas on National Forest System lands.
OPERATORRESPONSIBILITIES
R oad, trail, and area users must comply w ith th ismap, as w ell as all Federal, State, and local law s andregulations. Compliance w ith th ese rules is th eresponsibility of th e user.
Operating a motor veh icle on National ForestSystem roads, National Forest System trails, and inareas on National Forest System lands carries agreater responsibility th an operating th at veh icle in acity or oth er developed setting. Not only must th emotor veh icle operators know and follow all applicabletraffic law s, but th ey need to sh ow concern for th eenvironment as w ell as oth er forest users. Th e misuseof motor veh icles can lead to th e temporary orpermanent closure of any designated road, trail, orarea. Operators of motor veh icles are subject to Statetraffic law , including State requirements for licensing,registration, and operation of th e veh icle in question. M otor veh icle use, especially off-h igh w ay veh icleuse, involves inh erent risks th at may cause propertydamage, serious injury, and possibly death toparticipants. R iders sh ould drive cautiously andanticipate rough surfaces and features, such as snow ,mud, vegetation, and w ater crossings common toremote driving conditions. P articipants voluntarilyassume full responsibility for th ese damages, risks,and dangers. M otor veh icle operators sh ould take careat all times to protect th emselves and th ose underth eir responsibility. M uch of th e Cimarron National Grassland isremote, and medical assistance may not be readilyavailable. Cellular teleph ones do not w ork in manyareas of th e Cimarron National Grassland. Operatorssh ould take adequate food, w ater, first aid supplies,and oth er equipment appropriate for th e conditionsand expected w eath er.

PROHIBITIONS It is prohibited to possess or operate a motorvehicle on National Forest System lands on theCimarron National Grassland other than inaccordance with these designations (36 CFR261.13) V iolations of 36 CFR 261.13 are subject to afine of up to $5,000 or imprisonment for up to 6month s or both (18 U .S.C. 3571(e)).Th isproh ibition applies regardless of th e presence orabsence of signs.
Th is map does not display nonmotorized uses,over-snow uses, or oth er facilities and attractionson th e Cimarron National Grassland. Obtaingrassland visitor information from th e localNational Grassland Office. Designated roads, trails and areas may also besubject to temporary, emergency closures, andvisitors must comply w ith signs notifying th em ofsuch restrictions. A national grassland may issuean order to close a road, trail or area on atemporary basis to protect th e life, h ealth , or safetyof forest visitors or th e natural or cultural resourcesin th ese areas. Such a temporary and/oremergency closures are consistent w ith th e TravelM anagement R ule (36 CFR 212.52(b); 36 CFR261 subpart B).
Th e designation "road or trail open to all motorveh icles" does not supersede State traffic law .
