3. Identify state, local, and federal laws that pertain to infection control and compliance

Katherine West, BSN, MSEd,CIC
is a nationally recognized expert in the field of infection
control. She has been a consultant to the CDC, NIH, and NIOSH. She has written national training materials for
fire/rescue and law enforcement personnel, is widely published
in emergency response publications, and is author of
the Infectious Disease Handbook for Emergency Care
Personnel, 3rd Ed.
James R. Cross, JD is an attorney specializing in
employment law and medication. He taught EMS
and the Law for the EMS Degree Program at George
Washington University and has been published in numerous
publications.

This two-day course is designed to prepare the infection control officer to fully meet the requirements of the position under NFPA 1581, OSHA 1919.1030, and the Ryan White Law. The Ryan White Law states that each fire, EMS, or law enforcement agency must have a designated officer to manage exposure issues for the department. Understanding this role and the many aspect of this job is important to assist with department risk management and department member advocacy.
The role and responsibilities along with a job description are presented along with step-by-step program formulation to enable the course participant to return to his/her workplace and set up a working program. A well-trained designated officer will be an effective advocate for both the member of the department as well as the administration.
