Bi-Weekly XLXV No. 21, October 9, 2013 faith friendship fellowship followership fruitfulness www.firstsayyes.com “I have a wonderful friend who often times will start a sentence, “As my dear old Grandma used to say…” then she will proceed to of- fer some pithy saying or words of wisdom. And, wow, was her grandmother wise! (Truthfully, I think a lot of that wisdom has rubbed off on my friend, too! And, maybe, some of my friend’s words have been put into grandma’s mouth. I don’t know, I’m just say- ing, you know). In a letter from a seasoned believer to a younger one, we find these words: “...pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endur- ance and gentleness. Fight the good fight of the faith…” From Paul’s mouth to Timo- thy’s ears these words chal- lenge a follower to pursue a particular path. Ever hear the phrase, “If you don’t care where you are going, any old road will take you there”? If we are wanting to grow as a follower of Jesus there are paths that lead to deeper faith. To live in a right way, to be open to God, to express faith and love, to keep going and not give up and always use the right amount of strength for each situation—these are the things Paul says will lead to deeper faith and a greater walk with God. Sometimes, I think we drift. We let days come and go and we don’t actively pray or read the Word or listen to and look for God in life. Paul is encouraging Timothy not to put his mind or heart in neu- tral. Active pursuit of faith is vital to all of us. We were not made to merely exist. We are made to thrive, to enjoy and experience life fully. The abundance life offers in Jesus is vast. And no matter what our age may be we can learn from each other. We don’t have to wait until the end of life to impart wis- dom. In fact, it is along life’s way that the best lessons are learned and taught. For ex- ample: gentleness is best learned when modeled. Faith and love are, too. Maybe that’s part of the “good fight of faith” to go against the grain and live like Jesus. This is truth and wisdom worth learning and passing on to others. May we live in such a way that another will say of us, “As (your name here) use to say…” And, hopefully, what completes that sentence is wisdom worth repeating! See you at the “pursuing” place this weekend! ~jimd.
