Module Ethnographic of Orang Asli Jakun, The Indigenous People of Tasik Chini
Tasik Chini, the second largest fresh water lake in Malaysia is the land of Orang Asli typically
known as Orang Asli Jakun. The Jakuns normally reside around the lake, whereby their
livelihood and socio-economic activities are highly dependent on natural resources, fauna and
floras, richly found in the areas. Besides being a central settlement for the Jakun's community
in Malaysia, Tasik Chini is also renowned as the tourists’ attraction, especially among the
nature lovers. Around the Chini Lake, there are four village of Orang Asli which are Kg Gumum,
Kg Tanjung Puput, Kg Cendahan and Kg Melai. Tasik Chini has initiated knowledge-based
programs in order to promote and provide site specific knowledge and experiences.
Module Lowland Dipterocarp Forest Exploration
The PPTC Trail is one of the practical learning places for visitors. It is important as it has a clear
trail path with variety of unique forest trees. This trails as an attraction to the researchers,
university students and students to see the diversity of flora and fauna as they learn the
techniques of forest tree identification and find out the commercial value of forest trees in
the Lake Chini. Tourism education is more effective for tourists as they can see, touch and
appreciate about the lowland tropical rainforest.

TENTATIVE TASIK CHINI EXPLORATION: LAKE & FOREST EXPERIENCE
Module Wetland Exploration
Chini Lake is the first Biosphere Reserve in Malaysia awarded by UNESCO in May 2009. It acting
as sponge or natural water absorber of the floodwater, and is helping to protect the
downstream area from the flood’s descructive power (Cahyo et al., 2009). Chini Lake itself has
12 water opening known as “laut” or sea by the local or indigenous people. Biodiversity of
flora and fauna richness in Tasik Chini including 51 species of lowland forest plants, 15 species
of swamp plants, 25 species of aquatic plants and 87 species of freshwater fish. The unique
features of lotus (Nelumbo nucifera), water lily (Nymphea pubescens) and kercut (Lepironia
articulata) with the presence of fish species attracts the visitors to visit Tasik Chini. Visitors
can take a boat to visit 12 different lakes around Lake Chini and visit Orang Asli villages in
Gumum village, Tg. Puput village and Cendahan village.
