The Roxy Revue Bar at GrandWest will be transformed into a place of magic and mystery on October 10 when some of South Africa’s foremost magicians, illusionists and children’s entertainers will collaborate for the Children’s Magic Spectacular.

The cast of the Children’s Magic Spectacu-lar will take children and their parents on a magical journey to a world filled with illu-sions, magic and fantasy.

Staged by South Africa’s College of Magic, the Children’s Magic Spectacular forms part of the 2015 South African Magic Championships, the ultimate battle of the wands held every three years to select the country’s best magi-cian. The 2015 South African Magic Cham-

pionships also takes place at the Roxy Revue Bar, GrandWest from October 9 to 11.

The children’s magical journey starts at 10am. Tickets are available at www.compu-ticket.com with special discounts for group bookings and Most Valued Guest (MVG) card-holders. Tickets cost R110 per person, R100 per person for a family package of four or more or R90 per person for a block booking of 10 or more. Sun International’s MVG card-holders pay R90 per ticket.

* For more information about the 2015 South African Championships of Magic, visit www.collegeofmagic.com.

The Lilliput Children’s Theatre Company will be performing one of their most popu-lar shows, ‘Red Riding Hood’ at the Nassau Theatre for the October school holidays. ‘Red Riding Hood’ will run from Monday, October 5, until Saturday, October 10, at 10am at the Nassau Theatre Centre at Groote Schuur High School, in Palmyra Road, Newlands. The fairytale story follows the well-loved story of the naughty little girl who disobeys her mother and instead of taking the safe road to visit her granny, goes into the wood where she encounters a big bad wolf (in this adaptation a rather silly Loopy-de-Loop type who is an ex Music-Hall star). Red Riding Hood learns some important lessons along the way and as in all good fairytales lives happily ever after. Highlights of the show include a Rock and

Roll Granny and the Wolf’s striptease, which should have kids rolling about with laughter. The show is full of audience participation and is suitable for the whole family. ‘Red Riding Hood’ is adapted and directed by Elton John Duffy, who has been produc-ing Children’s Theatre for the past 22 years. This show stars Desle McConney as Red Riding Hood, Liande Valentyn as Granny, Rachelle Kruger as Jimmy and Elton John Duffy as the Big Bad Wolf.

* Tickets are R60 per person. Book at Com-puticket. For school block booking prices or queries, call 083 364 8284 or 021 558-2650, or send an email to [email protected]. For more information, visit www.lilli-putplayers.co.za.

Boasting a number of new attractions, Ratanga Junction theme park will be opening for a 10-day Spring Jol from Friday, October 2, until Sunday, October 11.

Among the new attractions on offer is a skating rink with artificial ice, a snow machine and a foam machine while for small kiddies there are new paddle boats as well as a pad-dling pool - so remember to take their bathing suits along.

Over and above the 30 or so rides and at-tractions, there is also an exciting new and

varied live entertainment programme so make sure you make the most of your day out at Ra-tanga, the Wildest Place in Africa, this Spring.

* For further details on park operating dates and times as well as ticket prices, visit www.ratanga.co.za.While the ride park opens for most school holidays and special bonus days, its extensive function facilities are open 364 days a year. For details in this regard call the group sales office on 021 5508504.

These school holidays, teddy bears at the V&A Waterfront are inviting young visitors to join them for a lot more than just a picnic. In fact, Hamley and Hatty Bear will be at the Amphi-theatre from 1pm to 2pm every day between October 3 and 9, to invite children under 12 up on stage to participate in fun games and to win spot prizes.

The two Hamleys bears form just a part of the free entertainment on offer each day at the ‘Bringing Toys to Life’ event. Youngsters will also be kept amused by toy demonstrations and trips from the Cape Wheel to the Water-shed and back on the Hamleys train, which will offer free rides between 2pm and 4pm for the duration of the holidays.

The Next 48hOURS • What’s Hot

The Caprice range of products

Review by Bianca Coleman

The strip of restaurants be-neath the Cape Royale in Green Point turns over with alarming speed. Café Royale

is the latest incarnation of the ho-tel’s own space, having previously been the 1800 Grill and the Banting Kitchen.

The space has been drastically re-duced, and the little coffee shop is Parisian in style. My partner in wine, Diva, has visited the City Of Light and she confirmed this, particularly with regards the décor style. There are murals on the ceilings, marble ta-ble tops, and those distinctive wicker chairs you see at every pavement café in Paris. The menu is in French and English, and many of the dishes have a French influence.

Breakfast is served all day, and options are extensive. You can pop in for a Hausbrandt Coffee (one of the oldest original Italian cof-fee roasters, dating back more than 120 years) and a croissant, or a slice of magnificent chocolate gateau.

Healthy options include homemade granola muesli with Greek yoghurt, honey, cinnamon and toasted nuts; seasonal fresh fruit with rosemary syrup; ciabatta toast with anchovy; and hot oats with cinnamon. Diva loves porridge so she ordered this to start, with butter and cold milk on the side. It was brunch so technically we were allowed to have a combina-tion of breakfast and lunch dishes. I decided beginning with something sweet was my Friday prerogative so I had a pain au chocolate with a cap-puccino. You can be truly decadent and add Nutella if you want. I bal-anced this with a cold pressed green juice – apple, mint, and cucumber.

Hearty breakfast specialities in-clude eggs in many guises – poached on an English muffin (yes I know the French bit isn’t really apparent yet, but bear with me), in an open or closed omelette, scrambled plain or with extras like chorizo, peppers and cheddar cheese, or smoked salmon, chives and cottage cheese; or done any way you like with bacon, sau-sage, mushrooms, tomatoes, baked

beans, and toast. Another choice is a Croque Madame topped with a fried egg. Madame is the same as Monsieur except for the egg, and is basically a toasted ham and cheese sarmie, but better.

On the flip side of the menu are the light meals, baguettes, quiche of the day, salads, and desserts – crepes, crème brulee, and apple tart tartin. You don’t get much more French than that. I chose the smoked salmon and artichoke cream on a savoury waffle, and Diva had the Caesar salad, but asked them to hold the chicken. It was well dressed and delicious. My dish was rather rich and the waffle was crispy. We cut through the creaminess of our meals with a glass of bubbly and a glass of wine. These are not on the actual menu, but it is a hotel and you can order whatever beverage you please.

Besides the main menu, there are daily lunchtime specials. Café Roy-ale is open to the general public as well as hotel guests, and there is a small outdoor courtyard for al fresco dining. The press release stated the

venue is “equipped with fibre optic internet for seamless, high-speed, uninterrupted online experience” and “positions itself as an ideal drop-in destination for business meetings and corporates, or for visitors from abroad with an acquired taste for faster internet.” However, we found

the WiFi to be slow to the point of don’t bother. The staff are wonder-fully friendly, and the service was excellent.

* Where: 47 Main Road, Green Point. For reservations, call 021 430 0500.When: Open daily from 7am to 5pm.

Most of us tend to keep to our regu-lar styles, products and makeup, but it is always better to refresh your look by changing one makeup product; or why not take the leap and give your whole beauty bag a complete overhaul? Sunnier days mean ensur-ing that your skin has the maximum cover against the harsh sun, so look for products that also have an SPF. Change your makeup shades to some-thing more natural, or even go for the nude look as this will keep your ap-pearance modern and fresh.

Changing your makeup products can become expensive, but I have

found that the Catrice cosmetic range is affordable, classic and of a good quality. So, to create your styl-ish, vibrant and glamorous look, you would have to start with a base or primer, which will create the base to apply your makeup. The Catrice Prime and Fine will do just that, by smoothing out fine lines and refin-ing pores. The next step would be to apply a foundation, which should be suitable to your skin tone. This can either be a liquid foundation, or a creamy mousse which can be applied with a brush. Blending is very impor-tant, so make sure that your founda-tion gives you a flawless look without any patches. To keep everything in place, try Catrice All Matte powder, which controls shine – it’s long last-ing and mattifying. I would suggest that you use a brush to apply your

powder. This way you can be guaran-teed that you would get even cover-age and a softer, silkier look. Cheeks can be highlighted by using a matte blush just on the cheekbones. Go for

flattering pink or peach shades and apply the deeper shade just below your cheekbones. Now that your face is all ready, you can now apply all your other products.

Your brows really define your look, so using a brow pencil or brush, fill in the gaps in your brows and make sure that it is light and not overpowering. If you always used a black brow pen-cil, go lighter and try a brown col-our, which will give you a more wide awake look. The Catrice Eyebrow Filler comes with a brush and the small fibres are perfect to fill in small gaps and it is also perfect for touch-ups. If you have mastered the art of contouring, then the Deluxe Trio Eye Shadow would be simple and easy to apply. The three steps would be to apply the medium shade all over the eye, then the darkest shade for the

eyelid crease and blend in and lastly highlight the inner corners of your eye and under the eyebrow with the lighter shade. If you are addicted to volume eyelashes, then the Glamour Doll Mascara is definitely for you. This soft and nourishing formula will create the ultimate lift, curl, and flut-tery look.

Matte lipsticks are in this season. Swap your bright red colours for something simpler, like the natural warm brown tones which are longer lasting and give you more coverage. If you like a hint of shine, then the Catrice Shine Appeal Fluid Lipstick would be ideal as the lightly reflec-tive finish gives lips a luscious, fuller look. So, if you are in a beauty rut and need to make a quick change, try Catrice cosmetics for that sleek, fresh and new you.

Andre The Hilarious Hypnotist – Celebrating 21 Years of On-Stage Antics

‘An Audience with Pieter-Dirk Eish!’ – back by popular demand

October 20 to 31

October 6 to 17

Coming your way early November

Andre in 140 characters (or slightly more)

Describe yourself in the Twitter format. The Mad Hatter of hypnotists.

When did you first become aware of your “powers”?Sadly the only power I was born with was the ability to never stop talking. Hypnosis is a learned skill that any-body can acquire. Stage hypnotist is another “power” all of its own.

Your biggest inspiration in life…The legendary Max Collie, the instant inspiration that led me away from teaching and into the world of stage hypnosis.

The most nervous you’ve ever been on stage…I performed at a Youth Day rally a few

years ago. For reasons unbeknownst to me I was the only white person at the event. The first performer managed to whip up the crowd as he marched through the history of apartheid. As he approached the end of a now very emotionally charged presentation, with everybody sing-ing and shouting he loudly, he an-nounced that this was the “last time the white Afrikaans speaking person dominated this country”, and there I stood; a White Afrikaans speak-ing hypnotist whose sole aim was to make people act in strange ways while I controlled them.

“Last night a show changed my life.” Which show?Nataniël. We have one artist with the skill, creativity and the ability to remove you from reality while sus-pending disbelief and he is Nataniël.

If you could be anyone else for 24 hours…Wow. I would stand firm in my own two shoes. I would hate to walk in any other person’s shoes, even if it was for only 24 hours.

Easiest way to your heart…I have been single for ten years. How I wish I could find the person who solves the riddle and finds the route into my heart.

You’ve been reincarnated as a pizza...which toppings should we expect? It’s mass overload complexity in bucket loads. Banana for flavour; avo for fun; chilli for a very dry, yet sharp sense of humour; olives for an expensive taste; cheese as a teaser of what’s to come; and garlic to re-member me by.

Pieter-Dirk Uys turned70 in September (on the 28th, to be precise), and the celebrated per-former, satirist and author is cel-ebrating this milestone year the best way he knows how to – by entertaining and challenging au-diences. Naturally, his irreverent creations from more than three decades of theatrical mirth, may-

hem, moegoes and make-up, are along for the ride, many of which can be seen in Uys’s smash hit show ‘An Audience with Piet-er-Dirk Eish!’, returning by mas-sive public demand to invade the stage of Pieter Toerien’s Theatre On The Bay in Camps from No-vember 3 to November 28.

Uys will morph from a Bo-

tha into a Bezuidenhout, from a Zuma via a Zille into a Merkel. From the beloved Tannie Evita to her debauched sister Bambi; from Nowell Fine to Mama Win-nie and Grace Mugabe; from the Arch to Mother Theresa – they’re all there, waiting to be unpacked, unpicked and paraded on the red carpet.

Q&A with actors Nicholas Pauling and Sven Ruygrok.

Why should fans of The Beatles be excited for this show?Pauling: It’s a look at the man that made The Beatles. You can buy items made of gold, but if you could meet the alchemist, wouldn’t you want to meet the alchemist?Ruygrok: It is a VIP, Backstage Pass into the life of The Beatles and the man who made it all possible, Brian Epstein; from the drugs and the ru-mours, the scandals and the truth and the intrigue and deals done behind closed doors. Why wouldn’t you want to come?

Tell us about your character and how you went about realising the role. What unique qualities do you think

you’re bringing to your character? Pauling: Research was key, but also as it is a play, our job is to serve the play so anything to bring the story to life. I bring a unique haircut to this pro-duction and Sven brings his seldom realized opera skills.Ruygrok: I play the role of This Boy. He is a streetwise opportunist, who gets picked up at a local bar in Liver-pool by Brain Epstein. He knows ev-erything there is to know about Brian, The Beatles and his acts, which leaves Brian very suspicious. This Boy’s true intentions are revealed as the play progresses.

Tell us about your co-star and how you guys went about establishing a workable chemistry in the play.Pauling: Sven has a beautiful singing voice, operatic it’s said, so (it’s been) easy to get on with a man who has the voice of an angel and the body of a frog. Honestly, I think he is one

of the best actors working at the mo-ment, so it was easy to get on.Ruygrok: Nicholas is one of the great-est actors I have had the privilege of working with to date. From day one, he treated me as an equal and a part-ner in this joint adventure. This is a rarity amongst mature actors, who can often be condescending. Nicho-las allowed me to be vulnerable and truthful in serving the play and a mu-tual respect and trust has grown be-tween us. We share a love for coffee, good wine and hand tennis, which are obviously great bonding tools for any play.

What did you discover about the figure that you’re portraying that completely surprised you?Pauling: His loneliness.Ruygrok: For all his roughness and sharp wit, This Boy is extremely vul-nerable and perhaps just as lonely as Brian Epstein was.

ral Outreach Programs in the West-ern Cape. This program is one of the Artscape initiatives run by the Department Audience Development and Education. The Breede Valley community will be enriched by special Artscape productions for Primary Schools, Artscape Careers in Arts Program for High Schools, Afrikaans- lan-guage and creative writing work-shops for Afrikaans teachers and learners by SBA as well as work-shops in journalism for learners by Media24’s WeCan24 Community Outreach Project. This will all come to a grand fi nale at the Gala eve-ning production for the broader community. All these activities will take place at the Worcester City Hall.

* Tickets for the Gala evening show is available at R20 p.p.Tickets can be purchased at: The Breede Valley Tourism Offi ces, 23 Baring Street, Worcester. Contact person: Nelmari van Litsenborgh 023 348 2795

Q&A with tour organizer Sed-rico Husselman:

What’s exciting for you about tak-ing the arts to new towns and re-gions?The Arts have the wonderful abil-ity to bring communities together in a non-threatening environment. This is an all-inclusive production and the stage will be shared by the special needs community and well known professional artists. Multi-

Culturalism is a core deliverable for Artscape and through this project we bring people in this Municipality from various languages and racial groups together under one roof. The diversity of art genres on stage ranges from Ballet to Contempo-rary dance and the genre of music will be well represented across clas-sical and traditional mediums.

How did you guys decide on the Breede Valley as a region that you guys wanted to take the arts to?Each year Artscape chooses a Mu-nicipality that speaks to our key deliverables and add to Nation Building. The Breede Valley Mu-nicipality serves a large population of students through the multitude of schools who reside in its borders. This is key for us to present our programs to the younger genera-tion as it assists us with our stra-tegic objective of building into the lives of the future patrons of the arts. Arts Education is also about building an awareness amongst young South Africans with regards to inclusivity of people with dis-abilities. This is an opportunity for us to bring able bodied learners together with special needs learn-ers in one venue and create the platform to showcase that Inclu-sive Education is possible and that the Arts is a wonderful method for making this possible.

What’s your long-term vision for this specifi c Outreach adventure?Artscape’s goal is always to leave a legacy where it delivers world class performances. We hope that our expressions on a community stage will encourage young South Africans to pursue a career in the arts not only on stage but also back stage. Hence in our Career Exhibi-tion production on the day to High Schools we introduce them to the various careers of sound, lighting, stage management and produc-tion management. This annual outreach project for us is to drive the constitutional value of Nation Building and Social Cohesion. October 8 to 17

October 20 to 31

The 2015 Baxter Dance Festival kicks off with the internationally-acclaimed rieldansers, Die Nuwe Graskoue Trappers, on Thursday, October 8, and Mamela Nyamza and Neliswe Xaba’s The Last At-

titude on October 9 at 8pm. There will only be one performance each by these two companies.

Following the resounding success of the 10th an-niversary last year, this year’s line-up will showcase a re-cord number of 78 works by choreographers with nearly 800 dancers representing dance studios, schools, com-panies, groups, independent dance-makers and chore-ographers from all over the Western Cape.

The Main Programme runs from October 8 to 16 at 8pm and will feature works by established profession-als. The Off Main programme will take place on October 10 at 5pm and will showcase different works by up-and-coming choreographers (including student chore-ography), while the Fringe programme on October 17 at 2pm will include 33 works by youth groups, dance studios, school groups and traditional dance groups.Visit www.baxter.co.za for the full programme.

Anton Chekov’s classic drama ‘The Seagull’, translated into Afrikaans and adapted by Saartjie Botha as ‘Die Seemeeu’ and featuring a star-studded cast, flies into the Baxter Theatre for a short season from Oc-tober 20 to 31. 2015 Standard Bank Young Artist for Theatre Christiaan Olwagen directs the stellar ensem-ble led by luminaries Sandra Prin-sloo, Marius Weyers and Gerben Kamper with Alyzzander Fourie,

Deon Lotz, Rolanda Marais, Martel-ize Kolver, Albert Pretorius, Geon Nel and Cintaine Schutte.

The production amassed mul-tiple awards and played to sold-out audiences at various festivals. Cape Town audiences are in for a treat and will be able to enjoy and expe-rience this updated and contempo-rary version in full-colour, 3D and surround sound, performed in Afri-kaans with English surtitles.

Mdu Kweyama breathes new life into ac-claimed playwright Reza De Wet’s ‘Missing’, which has been adapted from the original and translated by Stephen Stead into Eng-lish, under the title ‘Reza de Wet’s Missing’. The young director takes the play out of its better-known Afrikaans idiom and places it

into a universal realm as Kweyama brings more physicality to her poetic writing. The magical-realist play about a young daugh-ter’s escape from her dysfunctional rural family brings women who are trapped and scared into the spotlight. How far will their fear take them?

The funky dark farce ‘The White Man’s Guide to Sacrifice’, written and directed by Alex Mc-Carthy, is a quirky and hilarious story about two young men who have just been accepted into the Lamborghini Club.

This has been their dream for as long as they can remember. With the club’s connec-

tions, they will be fast-tracked up the corporate ladder and welcomed into the arms of luxury. In three days important club members are com-ing over for the party of a lifetime, and these two wannabees have no choice but to impress. However, there is a problem…there is a cow in their spanking new lounge.

The Next 48hOURS • #THEATREBUZZ48 THE FUGARD THEATRE

02 October - 08 October 2015

‘Orpheus In Africa’

The return season of David Kramer’s hit musical ‘Orpheus in Africa’ is now playing at the Fugard Theatre, following on

from its world premiere limited sea-son, which sold out, earlier this year.

Orpheus in Africa is based on the little known story of Orpheus McA-doo and the Virginia Jubilee Singers’ tour of Queen Victoria’s colonies in the last decade of the 19th Century.

Orpheus McAdoo was a free born son of a slave and a graduate from The Hampton Institute in Virginia.

He was the first African American impresario to perform in the British colony of South Africa where he and his group achieved unprecedented success.

Eric Abraham and the Fugard Theatre are proud to bring this brand new South African musical back to the Fugard main stage for the sum-mer season.

‘Orpheus in Africa’ is an opportu-nity to step into the Victorian era and experience the powerful singing style of the Virginia Jubilee Concert Com-

pany as they recreate well known classics such as ‘Roll Jordan Roll’, ‘Swing Low Sweet Chariot’, ‘Hush’ and ‘Deliver Daniel’, and debut David Kramer’s specially written songs.

Bookings for Orpheus in Africa are open with tickets ranging from R110 (slightly restricted view) to R220 are available through the Fugard Theatre box office on 021 461 4554 or via www.computicket.com. Given how rapidly the first season sold out, advance booking is highly recom-mended.

‘Bad Jews’October 27 to November 21

Currently showing

Eric Abraham and the Fugard Theatre will present the South African premiere of Joshua Harmon’s West End Smash Hit, the “blisteringly funny” ‘Bad Jews’, in The Fu-gard Studio Theatre towards the tail end of October.

After the death of their grandfather, Poppy, a family heirloom propels cousins Daphna and Liam into a domestic battle of honour, faith and heritage. Daphna, a devout, unbending “Real Jew” is at odds with her secular cousin Liam, an entitled young man detached from his cultural tra-ditions. Caught in the middle are Jonah, Liam’s younger brother, and Liam’s non-Jewish girlfriend Melody, who just wants everyone to get along. When the group are forced to spend the night in close quarters, hilarity and mayhem ensues.

Directed by Greg Karvellas (‘Champ’, ‘The Frontiersmen’), and starring Lara Lip-schitz, Glen Biderman-Pam, Oliver Booth and Ashley de Lange, ‘Bad Jews’ will run for a limited season at the Fugard Studio Theatre. Saul Radomsky designs both set and costume for this production.

Bookings are now open and advance booking is highly recommended. Tickets, ranging from R130 to R150 are available from www.computicket.com, or the Fu-gard Theatre’s box office on 021 461 4554 (concessionary prices for all Friends of the Fugard, students, block bookings and pen-sioners).

Brandon Bakshi (London), Minister Marais, Ryan Haslam (Atlan-ta) and Myers

The recently concluded Mu-sic Exchange conference (MEX2015) delivered an in-tensive and inclusive two-

day programme. Besides great hits and memories, delegates left with the requisite tools to help shape, and positively influence, their future com-mercial success.

Every session was geared towards taking their talent and expertise to the world. The move to GrandWest Market Hall was an unqualified suc-cess, with all delegates remarking how well the venue worked, adding to the conference’s fantastic audience growth this year. KFC was next door and Market Hall offered wonder-

ful spaces that had expos from Cape Town Fashion Council, Paul Bothner Music, Roland, Academy of Sound Engineering and the Cape Audio Col-lege. Highlights included Minister Alan Winde and Minister Marais from

Western Cape Government, opening the conference. City of Cape Town’s Garreth Bloor was in attendance too.

EntBanc managing Director Vuyo Tofile wowed the audience as he dis-cussed banking options for the crea-

tive sector and how to improve cash flow.

Good Hope FM held an outside broadcast on the Friday, for the en-tire day, with Nigel Pierce, Stan Mars and Carl Wastie on hand, while Heart FM held a three hour workshop on Saturday with Denver Apollus, Grant Jansen, Diggy Bongz and Suga.

MEX2015’s two keynote speak-ers, Bryan Michael Cox from Atlanta and Brandon Bakshi from London, summed up the conference in saying: “The gratitude from creatives here in Cape Town has more than humbled us both.”

Ebrahim Mallum, one of MEX2015’s speakers wrote: “Gained knowledge. Shared knowledge. Met amazing people, from industry lead-ers to those starting out. Honoured to have been a part of it this year.”

Nic Burger was quoted as saying: “Truly one of the first SA music con-ferences where I feel future artists, and current artists, learnt something.

The feedback has been phenomenal and I think educated a lot of people, something that’s needed more than people realise in South Africa. I don’t think a single person left without taking at least one piece of valuable information home with them”.

Delegate Deslynn Malotana wrote: “Music Exchange conference 2015, my first one actually, and I’m so glad that I attended. I went there ready to absorb as much information as I pos-sibly could, and that’s exactly what I did. If anything these two days were a reminder of why I do and love do-ing music.”

As the Legendary Bryan Michael Cox said: “You’ve got to see it, speak it and then act it.”

FILM: THE MARTIAN (3D)CAST: MATT DAMON, JESSICA CHASTAIN, CHIWETEL ELJIOFOR, KRISTEN WIIG, JEFF DANIELS, MI-CHAEL PENA, KATE MARA, SEAN BEAN, SEBASTIAN STAN, AKSEL HENNIE, DONALD GLOVER, MACKENzIE DAVISDIRECTOR: RIDLEY SCOTT

During a manned mission to Mars, Astronaut Mark Watney (Matt Damon) is presumed dead after a

fierce storm and left behind by his crew.

But Watney has survived and finds himself stranded and alone on the hostile planet. With only meager supplies, he must draw upon his ingenuity, wit and spirit

to subsist and find a way to signal to Earth that he is alive. Millions of miles away, NASA and a team of international scientists work tire-lessly to bring “the Martian” home, while his crewmates concurrently plot a daring, if not impossible, rescue mission. As these stories of incredible bravery unfold, the world comes together to root for Wat-ney’s safe return.

Based on a best-selling novel, and helmed by master director Rid-ley Scott, THE MARTIAN features a truly star studded cast.

Principal photography on ‘The Martian’ began November 8, 2014 in Budapest.

The gorgeous Central Europe-an capital has become known for

hosting a litany of big budget Hol-lywood movies because of its beau-tiful locales and experienced local crews. But what particularly drew filmmakers to the city for this pro-ject are the soundstages at nearby Korda Studios.

Korda’s Stage 6, said to be the largest in the world, was ideal for constructing a Martian landscape that would include the Hab and the launch pad for the MAV. The set was used primarily for dialogue scenes, Hab interiors, and the gi-ant sandstorm sequence. Matching wide-scope vistas were later filmed in Jordan.

Says producer Mark Huffam: “We had scouted the Australian Outback as a possible landscape for the Martian surface. That didn’t work out, and we decided to shoot most of the Martian sequences as interiors, giving us greater con-trol of the environment, and then matching those with exteriors at Wadi Rum in Jordan.”

During production, Korda was a bustling hub of activity, as all six soundstages were being utilized for constructing and revamping a doz-en major sets, including the space-craft Hermes and the astronauts’ Hab on Mars. The art department was constantly racing to stay a step in front of Scott, who works quickly and has been known to get ahead of schedule.

Matt Damon in ‘The Martian’A scene from ‘Straight Outta Compton’

FILM: STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTONCAST: ALDIS HODGE, COREY HAWKINS, JASON MITCHELL, KEITH STANFIELD, NEIL BROWN JR., O\’SHEA JACKSON JR., PAUL GIAMATTIDIRECTOR: F. GARY GRAY

The film revolves around the rise and fall of the Compton, California hip hop group, N.W.A, and borrows its title from the group’s debut album. In 1988, this groundbreaking new group revolution-ised music and pop culture, chang-ing and influencing hip-hop forever. N.W.A’s first studio album, ‘Straight Outta Compton’, stirred controversy with its brutally honest depiction of life in southern Los Angeles. With guidance from veteran manager Jerry Heller, band members Ice Cube, Dr. Dre, Eazy-E, DJ

Yella and MC Ren navigate their way through the industry, acquiring fame and fortune. They secured a place in history the moment they told the world the truth about life in the hood, which ignited a cultural war in the United States.

The Next 48hOURS • Fooding Around

I don’t think we (or should I rath-er say I?) can keep hiding un-der the layers of winter clothing anymore. As the days get warmer

one slowly comes out of hibernation and we begin to peel off the layers so as to absorb the delicious warmth and Vitamin D the African sun has to offer. Well, in my case I think I might pop a pill to get that essen-tial Vitamin D and go right back into hibernation, or should I rather say “Hidernation”. Where on earth did those extra Kilos come from?

It surely can’t be from over eat-ing...maybe. As one of my friends said, someone sewed her cloths to-gether while she slept. She gave me a few diet tips that she thought might

help, one being your pants will never feel tight if you just don’t wear any. I think I’m going to keep my pants on to remind myself that what you eat, what you burn up and what you are left with are all part and partial of what makes us who we are, for better or worse. Making wise choices could certainly help though, in shedding a kilo here and there. I think I might ask myself when putting anything into my mouth, “is it a waste of my waist?”

In my defence, or rather my ex-cuse for the extra kilos clutching desperately to waist and hips, is I did a lot of recipe development and testing and tasting for my new show on Food Network with Reza Ma-

hammad, called ‘Jenny and Reza’s Fabulous Food Academy’. Catch it in November on DStv channel 175. Oh; and before I forget, I have also writ-ten a new cook book that comes out this month. Had to eat and test my way through over 100 recipes there, never mind the recipe development and testing I do for a living - a girl can’t win can she? I have to say that every one of those mouthfuls were really “Yumcious”. Oh and speaking of “Yumcious”, I have spent a month cooking, testing and tasting menu items for my new cafe called “Yum-cious”, opening soon in the Cape Quarter.

So now I have to do something about the waist and hips. I’m going to be making Yumcious smoothies for breakfast, wonderful salads for lunch and dinner and not accept any dinner invitations until I fit comfort-ably into my pants again. I’m look-ing forward to all the wonderful sea-sonal fruit and vegetables starting to appear, especially strawberries and melons and mangoes, papaya and stone fruits, carrots, cream cheese and pineapples...oh heavens; there I go again. I feel a cake recipe coming on. Mmmmmm...a Yumcious, moist carrot cake, slathered with creamy cream cheese icing...

Let’s cook!

Jenny’s Carrot CakeServes 10

Ingredients for the Cake:• 1 x 24-26cm spring form bak-

ing tin• 2 cups cake flour• 1 tsp salt• 2 tsp baking powder• 11/2 tsp bicarbonate of soda• 2 ½ tsp ground cinnamon• 2 cups sugar• 11/2 cups sunflower oil• 4 eggs, beaten• 2 cups finely grated carrot• 1 cup canned crushed pineap-

ple, lightly drained• 1 cup desiccated coconut• 1 cup toasted finely chopped

walnuts or pecan nuts• 4 tbls poppy seeds

Ingredients for the Icing:• 200g butter• 400g icing sugar• 250g cream cheese, chilled• 5ml (1 t) vanilla extract

Method:Preheat the oven to 180 °C.Combine the first 5 ingredients in a large bowl.Stir in the sugar, oil and eggs. Mix well.Thoroughly blend in the carrot, pine-apple, walnuts, coconut and poppy seeds.

Turn the batter out into a greased and floured 24-26cm spring form baking tin or lineBake for 65-70 minutes or until firm and risen and receding from sides of pan. Cool briefly in the pan, and then turn out onto a wire rack to cool completely before icing.Make the icing. To make the icing, first beat the but-ter until softened, then stir in the ic-ing sugar till blended and then stir in the chilled cream cheese and vanilla essence.
