Big History Prime at Putney PSBig History Prime at Putney PSBig History Prime at Putney PS Last week Year 4 students had the opportunity to share their Big History knowledge with their parents at an information night in the hall and Year 4 classrooms. We were fortunate to have special guest, Professor David Christian, founder of Big History Institute and lecturer at Macquarie University attend as well.

Miss Colonna who has taught this 20 week program along with colleagues Mrs St Flour and Ms Gilbertson, has been working in close collaboration with Macquarie University to pilot this program and establish resources suitable for adapting this high school program to meet the needs of primary school students.

Parents’ feedback clearly reflect how impressed they are with the program and the effect it has had on their children’s curiosity and desire to learn.

CyberbullyingCyberbullyingCyberbullying At a recent Police Forum for Principals we were provided with information regarding the Office of the Children’s eSafety Commissioner.

This office deals with complaints about serious cyberbullying affecting children under the age of 18 years and investigates offensive or illegal online content such as child sexual abuse. They also provide safety education and training and undergo research.

It is always pleasing to hear that our students demonstrated good sportsmanship and performed to their personal best at events such as this.

Congratulations to the junior and senior girls relay teams who took first place in both of their relay finals and for being awarded with the Girls Athletics School Champion of the Zone Trophy!

Premier’s Reading Challenge Congratulations to the 54 students who completed the reading challenge this year. A special mention to Year 6 who had 12 students complete it, the most of any grade in the school.

Well Done! Three of PPS’ Year 6 class of 2011 have just been installed as some of the 16 student leaders at Ryde Secondary College. Kathryn Hempstead (L) and Daniel Osmond (R) are prefects and Michael Warren (Centre) is one of two school captains. Congratulations!

Riverside Enrichment program On Wednesday 24th and Thursday 25th August eight Year 5 students participated in the Riverside Girls High School Enrichment Program. Over the two days the girls were mentored by Year 8 Gifted and Talented students, working in groups to design the ideal high school classroom using the Design Thinking model. At the conclusion of the program the students confidently presented their projects in a presentation to parents and teachers.

Rugby League 7s Legends State Final Despite the inclement weather on Wednesday 24th August, the Rugby League 7s State Legends Finals took place at Macquarie University. Coach Richard Warner and the boys were ready to play despite the conditions.

The team began the day with a game against Denman Public School from the Hunter/Maitland District representing League Legend Steve Simpson. The boys played quality football and threw the ball out wide to our speedsters to finish off the job. Bronson Ward crossed over for three tries. The game finished with a beautiful kick from Keian to Omar to score a beautiful try. The final score was 20-6.

Our second game against Bankstown Public School representing League Legend Terry Lamb was a very different style of game. The Bankstown boys were big and our team had to aim up in defense, which we did.

Unfortunately we lost the game by a conversion goal. The final score was 14-12.

The third game against Narrabeen North Public School representing Manly Legend Cliff Lyons. The rain was torrential which meant the ball was not only hard to hold but difficult to see. It was another exciting game that could have gone either way. Our defense was strong but we were unable to finish off our sets. The final score was 10-6.

Our final game was against a very competitive Bateau Bay Public School representing David Fairleigh, a North Sydney Bears Legend. Putney was competitive but Bateau Bay was too strong and we were beaten convincingly. The final score was 30-0.

Despite the conditions the boys had a great deal of fun sliding in the mud and meeting both Legends of the game and current NRL players.

A big thank you once again to Coach Richard and Manager Kylie Noble for all their efforts. Alex Noble was the trainer for the day under atrocious conditions. His assistance running water and helping with warm up drills was much appreciated. Thanks to the parents for transporting the players to practices and the venue on the day. Thanks also for scrubbing the jerseys and returning them so they are ready for photograph day.

Sports Report A huge congratulations to all students who were involved in Winter PSSA sport this year. Summer Sport (T-ball, Softball, Cricket, Tennis, Swimming and School Sport) will resume this Friday, 2nd September. Students will return to the sport they were participating in back in Term 1.

Here are the team results from Winter PSSA:

Netball Well done to all netball players on a great season. A special congratulations to the Senior A team for making it to the Grand Finals. Unfortunately they lost to Ryde East but demonstrated outstanding teamwork and sportsmanship.

Throughout the season all teams demonstrated commitment to improving their netball skills, training hard on the new multi-purpose court. All players should be proud of their achievements.

Tiger Tag Congratulations to both the boys and girls tiger tag team. The boys tiger tag team won the competition this year in a very close grand final game against Denistone East! The girls team also achieved a fantastic result, coming 3rd overall.

Well done to Riley T and Scarlet J for receiving the best and fairest certificate for their ongoing commitment and leadership throughout the season.

All students demonstrated outstanding sportsmanship, persistence and team work throughout the competition and are very deserving of their achievements.

Football This year PPS fielded 4 football teams - Senior Girls, Senior Boys, Junior Girls and Junior Boys in the Ryde PSSA Football competition. It was a tough season and our students played some very competitive games against other schools in the area. At the end of the regular season our Junior Girls finished first and the Junior Boys and Senior Girls finished in 4th place!

A fantastic Grand Final was held between Putney and Hunters Hill Public and at half time it was 0-0. A superb goal from Baylee secured the 1-0 win and Putney Junior Girls became the champions!

I would like to thank Shelley Broomhead and Tom Nock for their assistance during the season. They provided administrative and coaching support which resulted in a very successful season for our school. Thank you to Ms Russell and Ms Bandiera for their support and to all the players who showed great resilience, persistence and great sportsmanship every week.

AFL This year PPS fielded a Junior and Senior AFL team.

The junior team developed some great skills over the course of the season, particularly the Year 3 students, many of whom had never played before. The juniors played well, with some great wins and some losses, finishing about halfway down their ladder.

The seniors lost their first game and then went on to win EVERY game they played, placing them first on the ladder at the end of the season. Some of their wins were by a massive margin, with the opposition often not scoring at all. We suffered a shock loss in the semi-finals and went on to beat Hunters Hill in the finals, leaving us in 3rd place overall.

The boys played hard all season and showed great sportsmanship. I was very proud of their achievements and conduct at ELS Hall. I would like to thanks the Year 6 boys who set up one of the fields every week and helped me learn the rules of umpiring. A special thank you to Frazer R for co-umpiring the last game of the season with me.

Zone Athletics Carnival Congratulations to all students who represented Putney Public School at the Zone Athletics Carnival on Tuesday 22nd August. We had a fun-filled day with many students running, jumping and throwing personal bests. We had great success over the day, with 13 students making it through to the Area Carnival, including our junior and senior girls relay teams who managed to out run the field taking first place in both of their relay finals. We were also awarded with the Girls Athletics School Champion of the Zone Trophy! Special mention to Mikayla K who received the 11 years Girls runner up age champion! We would like to thank all of the parents for their support, especially the cheering from the sidelines.

Naidoc Week On Friday the 26th of August we celebrated NAIDOC week at Putney Public School. NAIDOC originally stood for ‘National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee’. This committee was once responsible for organ-ising national activities during NAIDOC Week and its acronym has since become the name of the week itself. NAI-DOC week is a time to celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history, culture and achievements and is an opportunity to recognise the contributions that Indigenous Australians make to our country and our society. As part of our NAIDOC celebrations each class across the school selected an aspect of the Aboriginal culture to study. Each class then presented their learning at their Friday assembly. Across the school every class chose an interesting and significant aspect of the Aboriginal culture to reflect upon. Years five and six completed group based research projects on significant Aboriginal people throughout history, while Kindergarten looked at art-works from famous Aboriginal artists. It was fantastic to see the Aboriginal culture celebrated in such a way that provided students with insight into the lives of Aboriginal people throughout history and in society today.

School Photographs will be taken in Week 8 on Monday the 5th and Tuesday the 6th September.

All class and sibling photographs will be taken on Monday 5th September. Special group photographs, as well as band and choir will be taken on that Monday.

All team sport photographs will be taken on Tuesday 6th September.

Students are required to be dressed in full winter uniform for the Monday photographs. Girls are to wear tights rather than socks and ties to be worn if possible. Hair should be neat and shoes polished please. Band students will need to bring their instruments on the Monday for the photograph.

All sport team photos will require full sports uniform on the Tuesday. Students will need to bring all of their team uniforms to change into.

All photograph orders will be completed online – no cash please. Envelopes will be distributed. The envelopes explain the different packages for you to select. They also explain how to place an order online and where to record your 6 digit order number. Please fill out the order and return this envelope to your class teacher BEFORE the day of the photographs. All order form envelopes should be returned even if you are not ordering a photograph. Families wishing to have a siblings photograph need to fill out the sibling photograph envelope, which can be collected from the school office.

NSW Junior Cycling Race Championships This year the NSW Junior Cycling Road Race Championships were to be held in Wagga Wagga. We travelled the 5 hours drive there on Friday to familiarise ourselves with the course, even though we had spent 5 days in the last school holidays training there with our coach. The competition is made up of 3 individual races; Time Trial, Road Race and Criterium Race, with each race awarding it's own winner and medal. I have trained long and hard over the last few months to make sure I was ready to compete at this level, riding up to 80-100km per week, and managed win all 3 of my races and now be the Under 11 boys NSW State Champion.

Olympathon News! Congratulations to our prize winners, following the successful draw of prizes for the Olympathon at our whole school assembly last Monday, 22nd August. For every $10 raised, a ticket was placed into the draw to win one of the many generous prizes donated by Yr 6 families, and outside agencies arranged by Year 6 parents.

Prize winners were: Brandon L., Sophia F., Holly O., Sybella D., Penni P., Micah L., Ella P., Annika G., Ravi R., Catherine D., Teagan L., Alanah S., Thomas G., Marco J., and Matilda F.

On another note, thank you again to all the families and friends who supported our Putney students’ participation in the Olympathon. Thanks to your very generous donations, Yr 6 2016 raised $15485.05 This is an amazing figure and one that our Year 6 students are most proud of.

It is expected that this money will go towards the development outside the canteen, creating a more levelled space and installing tables and chairs for students to use. The development of this area will assist the community of Putney PS for many years to come and will always be partly attributed to the hard work of our Year 6 students 2016.

On Saturday 10th September Operation Art 2016 will be unveiled at The Armory Gallery, Sydney Olympic Park where over 800 artworks from almost 300 schools will be exhibited. Our four finalists from the Putney P.S. Exhibition, Eve M, Baylee B, Emily N and Lily L, had their artwork framed, were presented with congratulatory certificates and sent invitations to the opening of the exhibition where they will be treated

like star artists. The exhibition is open daily from 10am-4pm (free entry) until 30th October 2016. More than 10,000 visitors are expected to view Operation Art 2016 with many students and teacher from across Sydney. Please show your support for the program and our Putney finalists by coming along to the exhibition. On this event parking is available in P5 with a free shuttle bus to the gallery or public transport to the Olympic Park is also available.

Chess Challenge On the 18th of August 2016, 5 students from Putney Public School went to the Inter-School Chess Challenge heat at Meadowbank Public School. There they faced 7 rounds of intense chess against local schools. At the end of the day, the top 3 schools made it into the Inter-School Chess Challenge final. Unfortunately, Putney Public did not make it in. But, at the end of the day, those 5 students had a fantastic time at the Chess Challenge with Mrs Hahn and would like to do it again next year. We would like to congratulate Zet C for being our highest scoring player and thank Mrs Hahn for making this fantastic day happen. We would also like to acknowledge the support of Mrs Kirillov who did a great job as pseudo-manager for the day.

Phonological Awareness Phonological Awareness (PA) refers to a set of skills that form the basis of literacy development.

Students with good PA skills can identify and manipulate the different components of oral lan-guage such as words, syllables and sounds. Some of the skills that make up PA include being able to:

Count the number of words in a sentence Clap/count the number of syllables in words Identify and produce rhyming words Segment words into their individual sounds (e.g. ‘cat’ is made up of ‘c’ ‘a’ and ‘t’ sounds, ‘box’ is made up

of ‘b’ ‘o’ k’ and ‘s’ sounds) Blend sounds together to make words (e.g. “What word does ‘b’ ‘oo’ ‘k’ make?”) Identify the first, middle and final sounds in words Manipulate parts of words (“What’s left of the word ‘cowboy’ if you leave out the ‘boy’ part?”, “What’s left

of the word ‘take’ if you don’t say ‘t’?”) Manipulating sounds in words to create different words (“Say ‘take’ but instead of ‘t’ say ‘m’”).

At home, parents can help their children develop strong PA skills by:

Helping children clap/drum/jump out the syllables in a variety of words Playing ‘I-Spy’ using the first sounds of words (not the letter name) Reading regularly together Talking about the rhyming words in picture books Talking about the sounds you can hear in words Playing games where you think of as many words as you can that start with a particular sound
