DESCRIPTIONThe Clearwater river is a
large tributary to the UpperWhite river. The substrateconsists of cobbles withsmaller gravel in the manyriffles and tailouts. Theriparian area is primarily second growthconifer forest in the lower river with
recent clear cutting evident along portions ofthe upper survey reach. There is limitedamounts of LWD in the channel and much of
what is present is undersized or hardwood in
origin. There are a series of cascades atapproximately RM 4.5 above Lyle creek thatmay block further upstream migration.Much of the spawning takes place in thelower 2 miles of the river although manyredds are documented in the upper reacheslater in the season. Surveys for coho wereconducted for the first time this season.

River miles surveyed: 0.0 to 1.0Dates surveyed: 10/22/02Species surveyed: Chinook, Coho
AccessMile 0.5: Deer creek is located just of themain line on the 2 road. Take the left spurthat is gated just past the cowskullacclimation pond road.
DESCRIPTIONDeer creek is a upper
Puyallup river tributary. It islocated approximately 0.6 milesbelow Swift creek, on theopposite bank. Deer creek isabove the Electron diversion, so
as with many of the othertributary in the upper Puyallup,it is part of the surplus adultchinook and coho plantingprogram. Deer creek is notsurveyed with any regularity, but instead it is spot checked tosee how successful the adultplants are. The creek isconfined by moderate to steep
walls. The gradient is moderate with numerous deep pools and
good spawning medium. Deercreek is one of the few stream inlate summer and early fall withadequate water flow to plantadult chinook. Surplus adult chinook are planted in late summer to early fall, andcoho in late fall when available. Adult plant have been taking place since 1997, yetno natural returns have been documented.

DIRU CREEK HATCHERYDIRU CREEK HATCHERY
Puyallup Tribal Fisheries Hatchery FacilityRiver mile: 0.5
Species : Chinook, Coho, Chum
10.0029
DESCRIPTIONDiru Creek Hatchery is located on Diru Creek (10.0029) a tributary to Clarks
Creek in Puyallup, Washington. Water is supplied from two pumped wells (800 gpm)and gravity flow out of Diru Creek (200-500 gpm). Incubation consists of 20 vertical
stacks of 12 trays. Initial rearing uses 16 shallowtroughs in the hatchery building. Additional rear-ing containers include four 50x5x5 raceways, two6696 cubic foot ponds (UP1 and UP2), and one13,000 cubic foot pond (LP) that are also used for
holding returningadults.
In addition, thePuyallup Tribe op-erates six acclima-tion ponds in thePuyallup Water-shed. Three of theacclimation pondsare used for rein-troducing fall chi-
nook and coho into a 30-mile reach in the Upper Puy-
allup River above Electron Dam. Electron Dam has been an anadromous barrier for97 years. A fish ladder was construction and completed in fall of 2000. Three otheracclimation ponds are located in the Upper White River drainage. These ponds areused for reintroducing White River spring chinook back into their endemic range. Allponds have approximately 10,000 cubic feet of rearing space and between 1 to 3 cu-bic feet per second flow.
The Puyallup Tribes restoration goal is to re-build depressed chinook stocks and remove themfrom ESA listing. Using acclimation ponds, limit-ing harvest, and making substantial gains inhabitat restoration, the tribe will be able to ac-complish this task. Levee setbacks, oxbow re-connections both inter tidal and upland, Com-mencement Bay cleanup, and harvest cutbackshave already been initiated. Only the jump-starting of chinook in habitat areas devoid of fishis left. Acclimation ponds are a proven methodin increasing fish numbers on the spawninggrounds.

Hatchery, rearing 200,000 fall chinook for release on station and 200,000 for acclima-tion ponds in the upper Puyallup River for a combined 6,857 pounds of fish.Historically, fall chinook have been reared and released since 1980 with a variety ofstocks, goals, and objectives.
Spring Chinook Hatchery Production
The three-acclimation ponds the Puyallup Tribe operates are satellite facilities tothe White River and Minter Creek Hatcheries. Production levels have been around400,000 smolts, however, it fluctuates based on available brood stock. They have aproduction capacity of 837,000 zero age smolts.
Fall Coho Hatchery Production
Currently, 200,000 coho yearlings are imprinted and released in the Upper PuyallupWatershed. Coho originate from Voights Creek Hatchery where 100,000 are adiposeclipped and coded wire tagged. Fish are released at 20 fish per pound, for a total bio-mass of 10,000 pounds.
Winter Chum Hatchery ProductionThe Puyallup Tribe currently raises 1.5 to 2.0 million-chum smolts for release intothe lower Puyallup River. This program significantly augments a Tribal river fisheryand All Citizen purse seine fishery in East and West Pass in Puget Sound. This stockoriginated initially from Chambers Creek. Puyallup Tribal Fisheries releases 1000 to3000 pounds annually based on available brood stock returns to Diru Creek Hatchery.
The program was started in 1991 and has become self-sustaining.

flows within the Puyallup river channelalong the right bank. The channelchanges from year to year with Puyallupriver high water events but providesexcellent spawning gravel throughout this
reach. At the Dollar launch, the channelheads away from the Puyallup and drainsan old oxbow adjacent to the dike.Passage out of the Puyallup River channelis questionable and no fish were observedabove this point, however extensive
surveys were not conducted. It is quite likely
that the upper reaches of Dollar provide over- wintering habitat for multiple species ofjuvenile salmonids.

The lower reach of Dollar creek flows withinthe Puyallup river floodplain.

Mile 1.7: From McCutcheon Road, turneast on Rhodes Lake Road and continue to119th Ct E. Follow this road ~0.25 miles
DESCRIPTION T h e u p p e r
reach of Fennelcreek is a complex, moderately highgradient pool-riffle/step-pool stream
flowing through abroad valley. Ther i pa r i an z o n econsists of amature hardwoodforest with a dense understory of salmonberry. There is abundant LWD in andadjacent to the channel with numerous logjams throughout this section. Spawninggravel is abundant and excellent throughout this reach along with many deep pools.
The reach below the McCutcheon Rd. bridge ismuch lower gradient; it flows primarily in thePuyallup River flood plain. It contains excellent ifsomewhat unstable spawning gravels, with much
lower amounts of LWD and less channelcomplexity. Approximately 0.2 miles upstream ofthe McCutcheon bridge is a LB short run springfed tributary. It has excellent spawning gravel andsupports high densities of chum salmon each year.Coho and chum totals on the following pagesinclude both Fennel creek, and Fennel tributarydata combined.

DESCRIPTIONFrom 0.6 to 0.5 Fox creek is a
moderate gradient step-pool stream with good pool frequency andadequate hardwood riparian cover. From 0.5 to 0.3 the gradient decreasesand the channel assumes a pool-riffle
character with excellent spawninggravels. This middle reach sees thehighest spawning densities. From 0.3to the confluence with the Puyallup, the stream meanders through a grassy
area with little riparian cover and moderate
amounts of fine material obscuring thegravelly substrate. There are few matureconifers in this reach although many youngGrand firs have been planted as a restorationeffort. Coho are the most common salmonidfound in Fox and likely ascend as far up as theKapowsin tree farms 6 Rd.

Ipsut has been surveyed primarilyfor chinook and coho, but also in thespring for steelhead. No salmon orredds have been observed. Reasons forthe absence of anadromous fish arelikely related to the streams location
within the basin, and the general lack
of suitable spawning gravel within thelower fish accessible reach.
