the 4th annual Summer Youth Radio Camp! If you’re between the ages of 9 and 12 and want to share
your views and music on-air, we want you for Radio Camp! Th ere are three week-long sessions that run from Monday, July 25 to Friday, July 29; Monday, August 15 to Friday, Au-gust 19; and Monday, August 22 to Friday, August 26. We’ve also drastically reduced the price from $200-$250 to $125 for co-op members and $150 for non-members.
Campers will hang out at the station and receive fun, hands-on activities that teach them about the wonderful world of community radio, as well as how to produce a high-quality radio show! Join us for a truly unique camp experience this summer. KCR’s Radio Camp is the only camp in Nelson that teaches kids how to be real live radio stars!
At the end of each week, campers will work together to produce an hour-long show, making radio history, and showcasing all of their new talents as radio broadcasters. Dutch Girl Peonies At Peony ShowDutch Girl Peonies At Peony Show Adriana Work, owner of local peony farm in Beasley was
thrilled with two 1st Place, one 2nd Place , and one 3rd Place in the Canadian Peony Society (CPS) 14th Annual Peony Show and AGM held at the ENMAX Conservatory at the Calgary Zoo July 2-3. She won prizes for her blooms Sarah Bernhardt, Gay Paree, and an unknown cultivar known only as “Hot Pink Heritage”.
“I think the late spring really helped me win at the CPS show,” stated Mrs. Work. “Our bloom period was delayed by about 3 weeks but when they did fi nally bloom they were huge, and perfectly formed, which obviously worked in my favour.”
Mrs. Work started her peony farm back in 2005 with three heritage varieties she found on the farm, and 4 varieties she purchased. Over the past 6 years she has been building her collection which now stands at around 90 varieties. Her peonies cover about ½ acre and she and her husband, Mar-vin, are expanding.
“We have added 400 plants since last fall,” explained Mrs. Work. She credits good soil and the sunny exposure on her Beasley farm for her success in growing peonies. Peony en-thusiasts will be pleased to know that Mrs. Work was able to purchase Rockii Tree Peonies while in Calgary. Rockii Tree Peonies originate in China and are hardy to -40 C!

A poll will be conducted on disposition of the Morning Mountain Insurance Funds
Apart from the Blewett School, Morning Mountain was a meet-ing place, and a recreation centre with many countless volun-teer hours going into its construction and operation. The facility operated from 1974 until 1999 when the lodge was completely destroyed by fi re. Given the changing climate and volunteer fatigue, the community made the decision to accept the in-surance payout for the facility, not rebuild the ski lodge and to cease operations of the hill.
Funds were placed in a dedicated service with the Regional District of Central Kootenay for recreation projects to be determined by the residents of Taghum, Blewett, Beasley and Bonnington.
Without a community group to take over the Morning Moun-tain area, the RDCK has paid the water licence and the Crown Li-cence changed from Ski Hill to Recreation Area. The ski hill area has stayed open to the public. The Nelson Area Cycling Club has recently applied for tenure over part of the area.
Land use confl icts are reported by neighbours and recreation users with burning, bush parties, trespass and mud-bogging detracting from the area. Funds are required to install signs and improve the area. Morning Mountain is at another crossroads.
Community members have expressed interest in many other recreation opportunities aside from the ski hill, none of which are funded by current Parks or Recreation taxation.
The Directors for RDCK Area E and F are seeking community di-rection for the expenditure of remaining funds from the Morn-ing Mountain Ski Hill insurance settlement.
Residents of Blewett, Taghum, Beasley and Bonnington areas please attend this important community meeting.

Innovative Partnership Connects Farms and Families
Kootenay Kids and West Kootenay EcoSociety an-nounced today that the popular Farms to Families pro-gram would resume for 2011. Th rough the program, Kootenay Kids provides vouchers to families in need to allow them to purchase fresh produce at the Cottonwood and Downtown markets operated by EcoSociety. Each voucher, worth $3, can be redeemed for the same value in fresh produce, syrup, honey, eggs, or meat. Processed food, cooked food, and baked items are not eligible for the program.
“We love this program because it helps address the nu-tritional needs of families in the region and encourages participation in an important community event,” said Jen-nifer Sebastian, program coordinator for Kootenay Kids. “Farms to families has been a huge success for each of the past two years, and we’re confi dent this year will be no diff erent.”
EcoSociety Executive Director David Reid agreed, say-ing “Farms to Families recognizes the important connec-tions between health, the environment, and social justice. Th is project directly supports our goals in hosting the markets each week: we want to get more fresh local pro-duce in the hands and mouths of families, and we want to support our region’s farming community.”
Th e program was originally funded in part by the BC Gaming Commission. A fundraiser with Grounded Cof-fee in Nelson and private donations have allowed the pro-gram to continue in 2011. Qualifying families can pick up their vouchers from Kootenay Kids (312 Silica Street) in Nelson and spend them at the Wednesday market or the Saturday market until October 29, when the markets close for the winter.
