Install smoke alarms on every storey o you home andnside bedrooms i you sleep with doors closed.

Put resh batteries in all alarms at least once annually.

Replace any smoke alarm over 10 years old.

Never remove an alarm or its batteries to silence anuisance alarm; instead buy alarms with a Hush button soyou can quiet a alse alarm and remain protected.

Instill Good Eating HabitsAt A Young Age

As inants grow into toddlers, its important that parentshave the necessary guidance or introducing oods at theright time. Tis type o inormation will ensure that chil-dren are getting proper nutrition through a balanced diet.o help get them started on the right track, take a look atthese healthy eating tips geared to high-energy tots andbusy parents:

As your toddler begins the transition to solid ood, dietary iron is an important priority and thereore iron-rich oods, such as iron-ortifed cereal, are important frstoods. Iron is required to make red blood cells which carryoxygen throughout the body. It also helps tissues and or-gans unction properly.

When serving iron-rich oods rom non-animalsources, be sure to include those that contain vitamin Csuch as oranges, tomatoes and broccoli. Not only will thevitamin C help to improve the absorption o iron, but itwill also help support the immune system and the de-

velopment o healthy bones and tissue. When you introduce your child to solid ood, include

dairy and ensure it has high at content. Tis is an import-ant source o energy or brain and tissue development.

Dairy products also provide an excellent source o cal-cium and a source o vitamins A, D, and B6, which worktogether to help build strong bones and teeth.

Include oods that are enriched with omega-3 DHAwhich supports the normal development o the brain, eyesand nerves primarily in children under 2 years o age.

Some toddlers fnd regular milk di cult to digest atfrst. I this is the case with your tot, consider a transitionalmilk product. Tose with a milk protein level and ratio(whey/casein) closer to that o breast milk will make iteasy to digest.

Foods that contain less sodium are generally easier ontoddler tummies.

Avoid plant-based beverages such as soy, rice, or al-mond beverages, beore 24 months.

Be a good role model. If your little one sees you enjoy

nutrient rich foods, they are more likely to enjoy them as well.

Try not to worry about what your child does and doesnot eat. A balance of nutrients might not happen in one day,but if you continue to serve a variety of food options, yourtoddlers nutrient intake may average out over several days.

Always talk to your doctor or a registered dietitian if youare concerned that your child isnt eating a balanced diet.

Selkirk College ESA Program Coordinator, Dawn Langsays this government unding is not only important tothe college, but also to the entire West Kootenay regionbecause it helps to train region residents or jobs and fllprojected gaps in the regions labour market. Our propos-als are based on labour market research; we look at theregional inormation and consider individual communityneeds as well, Lang says. Were talking with our stake-holders and fnding out whats needed in the communities

within the Selkirk College region. Te intent is to providetraining that benefts both the individuals and our WestKootenay communities.
