This beautiful bright young cat is looking more and more like a Maine Coon as her winter coat grows in. Belle was found with her 5 kittens taped inside a box and abandoned in Castlegar. Her kittens were all adopted quickly, but Belle has been overlooked. She is an extremely outgoing and friendly people cat, loves cuddles and interaction. She is not happy with other cats around. She loves to play and explore. She is spayed, vaccinated, clean and litter trained. She would like a forever home where she can safely go outside during the day, al-though she has been an inside-only kitty for many months and is fi ne with that (as long as there is a good window for viewing).

Such a special girl, and easy to live with! Tildie was found abandoned with her young kittens under a tarp in someone’s garage in Castlegar. Her kittens have been adopted, but Tildie waits patiently in a foster home for her special person. Tildie is an easy keeper ... she likes to play with things dangling from a string, and with her mousies. She is a great companion, gets along with other cats, and is happy being indoors (but could also go outside during the day in the right home). Tildie is spayed, vaccinated, healthy, happy.

Boots is such a nice boy, clean, quiet, and good with other cats because he is non-aggressive without being timid. He was found as a stray in Castlegar well over a year ago, and had an eye injury at the time. This injury progressed into a painful situa-tion, and our vets recommended removing the eye. The surgery has gone well, and he is recuperating nicely. He should be ready to be adopted soon. The only extra expense for Boots should be for special food: MediCal Satiety (he needs to keep his weight under control). Also, our one-eyed pirate will have to be an inside-only kitty for the rest of his life; his current age is approximately 7 years. Boots is neutered and vaccinated.

This friendly, outgoing boy is just 4 months old, and he’s already 46 lbs! Moka comes from a working line of dogs; he’s an Anatolian Shepherd – Akbash cross. These dogs are known for their guarding and livestock protection capabilities They are smart and independent.

We also want Moka to have a loving home where he will be included as part of the family. Moka has been neutered, tattooed, and vaccinated. He is being fostered close to Nelson, and is available to be met. Call the KAAP volunteers at 250-551-1053 or go to www.homes4animals.com for more information.

If your pet will allow it, open its mouth and look inside. Look for the warning signs of gum disease – bad breath, red and swollen gums, a yellow-brown crust of tartar around the gum line, and pain or bleeding when you touch the gums or mouth. Seek veterinary care if you notice any of these problems.

Slocan Library cont’d from pg 23 IBM’s corporate policy encourages employees to volun-teer in their local communities, and off ers monetary in-centives for doing so. Yuval applied to IBM’s Community Grants Program aft er completing 100 hours of volunteer work for the library. Yuval’s volunteer time satisfi ed IBM’s requirements and the project was acceptable, but, as the Slocan community library is not a ‘registered’ non-profi t group, it was found ineligible to participate.

Joanne Ellis, Executive Director of WE Graham Com-

munity Services Society (WEGCSS), and a Slocan com-munity library committee member stepped in at that point. Noting that WEGCSS is a non-profi t organization mandated to provide educational, social, recreational and cultural services to the Slocan-area community, she said: “As an umbrella group, we can be the non-profi t associa-tion sponsoring Yuval’s application for the benefi t of our local community library.” With all requirements fulfi lled by Yuval Hager, WEGCSS, and the library, the grant ap-plication was successful, and the result was a cheque from IBM for $1,000. Don’t you just love a happy ending?

One Off In IndiaFeeling an urge to travel but unsure about travelling on your

own? Want to live vicariously through another’s adventures? On Th ursday, February 23 at 7 pm, Slocan Valley Recreation will be off ering another popular travel talk at the Slocan Park Hall which may just have something for everyone.

One Off in India will be hosted by Randi Fjeldseth, who has taken two extensive trips to India in the past year. As a solo traveller, Randi has experienced many popular and less-acknowledged travel destinations in the world. At this talk she will be recounting her adventures into India and Nepal. From Mumbai to Agra; to the snow tinged Annapurna to the chaos of the Pushkar Camel Fair. How to get around, where to stay, what to avoid – this is a per-son who can speak from her own experience and off er some great advice.

She’ll be sharing her adventures through slides and discussion. Bring your questions and be prepared to be fascinated. Admission to this event is by donation, with a portion of the proceeds going to the Slocan Food Bank.

To make things easier, please contact Slocan Valley Re-creation at 250-226-0008 and let them know you’re coming.

Winlaw Outreach ProgramTh e Nelson Public Library has returned for another sea-

son of bringing library services to patrons in the Slocan Valley (Area H south). On the third Th ursday of each month the library will set up shop in the Winlaw School library from 3 pm to 7 pm.

Everyone is welcome to come in and browse our ro-tating mobile collection of books, DVDs and MP3s for

adults and young readers alike, check out and return items, sign up for or renew their Nelson Public Library memberships and learn more about the many services, online resources, and programs that the library has to off er. Our smiling Outreach librarian will be on hand to answer your questions.

Did you know that library items can be placed on hold for delivery to Winlaw School? To arrange delivery, please call the Nelson Library at 250-352-6333 before 8 pm on the Monday evening prior to the third Th ursday of the month. Library items can also be delivered to the Herit-age Credit Union in Slocan Park for pickup each Th ursday. And don’t forget our handy, 24-hour drop-off box at the credit union. Contact the library for more information.

Mark these Winlaw Outreach Library dates on your cal-endar: Th ursdays, February 16, March 15, April 19, May 17 and June 21. See you at the library - and bring a friend!

Come Celebrate With Us!Th e Slocan Community Forest gets a 25 year license!

Come celebrate with us on Sunday, February 12 from 12 noon to 5 pm, Slocan Integral Forestry Cooperative (SIF-Co) is hosting a free family-oriented Winter Celebration day at Valley View Golf Club, in Appledale in the Slocan Valley. We would like to invite you to this event to cele-brate the 25-year tenure SIFCo has just been granted, to manage over 35,000 acres of land here in the Slocan Valley.

In partnership with the Slocan Valley Recreation Com-mission and Rails to Trails, we will have a cross-country ski track set as well as snowshoes available for your use. Between 1 pm to 2 pm, test your speed and grace on your skies or snowshoes compared with your neighbours in a short timed-start competition. Th e rest of the aft ernoon the track will be open for everyone’s use. A silent auction will be held indoors with a chance to win a custom concrete bench generously donated by Molded Stone of Winlaw.

For kids we will have a shorter timed-race on skies starting at 12:30 pm, a small scavenger hunt on the prop-erty starting at 2 pm, and tobogganing. Inside the club house there will be several interactive stations set up for children of diff erent ages where everyone can learn about the forest we live in.

We will also have free hot chocolate and a bonfi re all aft ernoon. At 3 pm inside the clubhouse, there will be short welcome speech and free cake to celebrate our ten-ure! Th e Valley View clubhouse kitchen will be open all day until 6:30 pm. Come celebrate with us! Aft er 8 years of work, we have reached a major milestone towards com-munity control of our watersheds and sustainable logging practices. Something certainly worth celebrating!
