ortland Water Spectacular is the North- west’s Largest Waterski Show Team. Per-forming shows throughout the United States since 1986, we have over forty per-forming members ranging from age 4 to 77 and many supporting members working behind the scenes. Most members are stu-dents or working adults. About Show Water Skiing Show water skiing has been called the most entertaining discipline in the sport of water skiing. It is fast-paced, exciting, graceful, and most of all, fun to watch. Virtually all aspects of the sport – including barefooting, jumping, tricks, slalom, wakeboarding, swivel skiing, doubles, and pyramids – are choreographed into one grand performance. In its simplest form, show water skiing involves a group of skiers performing a variety of acts with the primary objective of providing entertainment. Extremely popular in the upper Mid-west and practiced throughout the nation, waterski shows feature several water ski acts choreographed to music and built around a theme that tells a story. Show water skiing is a rich part of the history of water skiing. No one knows what Ralph Samuelson, the acknowledged father of waterskiing, hoped to accomplish when he created the sport in 1922, but it was soon apparent that one thing he wanted to do was put on a "show" for his neighbors on the Minnesota lake where he lived. Samuelson’s first pull on skis was behind a motor boat, but he quickly created a new act by skiing behind an airplane on floats! Meanwhile, in Seattle, WA, another enterprising ski maker named Don Ibsen (a third pioneer of water skiing, who also didn’t know about Samuelson) was looking for a way to promote the fledgling sport and his products. In 1937, he recruited a few local skiers and they put on a show at Seward Park in Seattle. He named the troupe the Ski-Quatic Follies, and their promotional slogan was "Poetry in Motion." In 1939, Ibsen and two friends, Bill Schumacher and Bob Schmidt, created what is believed to be the first water ski club in the United States — the Olympic Water Ski Club. We are always looking for new members to share this unique and wonderful sport with. We are a family team welcoming kids of all ages and there is no experience necessary to join, we can teach you to ski. Membership is super affordable and boats & equip-ment are provided.
